  1. best of luck! they look good! enjoy getting your first buck!!
  2. we passed on this 2 year old 10 pt last season.. he survived...
  3. doesnt matter brand of gun. it has to fit you and you need to be comfortable with the position of safety, operation of bolt, hand grip, legnt of pull, ect. if it fits it will be a great gun for you. some people like to pay for a name. This is a fact.. if its a company thats been around remingtion, sako, weatherby, winchester, marlin, ruger, ect its a good gun! A gun that wont last will not be bought and the company will not have any buisness and be forced to close. ill put some of my lest expensive guns against most people's expensive guns and out shoot them every time. what good is a 1000yd glass job and freefloating barrel if your average shot is going to be under 200 yrds? a nice gun i'm sure but your paying for things you dont need or require for your shooting/hunting experiance.
  4. i keep my cameras in high traffic (human) areas where i can check them whenever i have time. I try to stay out of bedding and staging areas. feed fields and scrapes on the edge of them are my favorites seem make my intrusion the least noticeable. its great if you get a picture of a good buck in a secret spot but the best chance to get him is the 1st time you set up on him. checking a camera every two weeks or even a month may be the 1 time to much and he's tipped off and your chance is gone....
  5. Any doe tags recieved out there? i got my landowners in 9w and a tag for 9f. a lot of my friends are getting turned down..not looking forward to next year (if it happens) with no either sex tags for bow and muzzloader.. I ve seen a lot of deer..still trying to figure out how they come up with their numbers.
  6. sounds crazy but i remove all my stands (34 of them) everyear and they are completly checked straps, metal, nylon, seats replaced, painted and cables checked for frays. i have a lot of friends that hunt and would not like to see them get hurt out of a stand.. you spend a lot of money for a stand so why let it rot away out in the woods all year? Had a friend who laughed at me for years because it would take me 2 months to get all the stands out. that is untill he was checking his stand to see it it was safe while up in the air 15 ft where it sat out for 3 years. All looked good so he got in it... a cable snapped and he fell fortunatly he wasnt hurt to bad..still missed 1/2 of bow season with just bumps and bruises... check your stand cables(they too can rot inside the tubing) a foot off the ground get on it and jump! a foot fall might make you look foolish but a long fall.....
  7. exactly bubba!! its not in my backyard syndrome... personally i believe lot of nice deer are taken and have been since 1939.. dont see a biological need to have it, only a media impressed need do to to much advertising and antler craze. if you want a big buck so bad bite the bullet you know what needs to be done! do it!
  8. now the question..will they all stay once the bachlor group breaks up..... boy id like oct 1st as the opener this year.....
  9. No ar's are not the simplist way to raise the age of bucks... no buck season only doe would be easiest!! no looking to see if it had points at all ..any thing on its head...dont shoot!!! but then we would have a revolt in nys...lol.. Joe hit it most people would give up their first born to get a buck ..the though of not being able to shoot a buck...oh the horror!!!! course eveyone that shoots a little buck for meat would be happy still they could shoot does...wait cant they do that now???? :
  10. All this can be done volentarialy.. the real question is why it isn't? Why do people not pass up younger deer for older ones??
  11. top two look to be same deer 2010 -11 . bottom deer is a different one but looks like same one from 2010-11. bottom pic fuzzy but it looks like it is carrying some trash where top deer is clean except for missing brow. most likely brothers or related as same antler config. look like you have two nice ones!
  12. i get mine from town clerk.. i just say landowner and the info is in the computer and has been for years, she looks it up and i get my permit..
  13. not sure its the same deer....
  14. A fresh tarsal gland usually cut from a road kill (if not bloody)buck or doe doesn't matter. use it any time during the season. its a deer's calling card.... if a deer smells it it will come in to see who the new guy or girl is. best thing i ever use last 3-4 days if refrigerated. take em both freeze one and use one right away.
  15. the earlier the better after danger of frost. i like to shoot for middle of may but it can still black tip and dent when planted in june. deer prefer dried(dented corn) if it gets frosted before black tips its usually is rubbery and subject to fungus..deer will avoid it.
  16. find pines/evergreens.. the nest will be close to the trunk near the top 3rd of the tree looks like a ball of grass.. look for midden piles of pinecone scales and cores under pines(will almost look like a pile of mulch) where they feed, if apple trees are near by all the better! reds are a lot of fun! and great practice for sharpening shooting skills. a good stand of pine spruce on stateland will be overrun withthem!
  17. oats or wheat..will sprout and be eaten quickly.. the feed version of the seed is cheap.. less than 15$ for a 50 lbs bag will do 2 acres.... as long as it isnt under water it will grow. anything is better than nothing..
  18. i know a lot of others that would like them too
  19. looks like a 4 x 5 .... hope he sticks around for you... i really never like to get pics of big deer till the horns are stripped..see lots of bachlor groups in the summer than they dissapear....
  20. Cooler wether will create more daytime movement earlier in the season but this isnt rutting, rut breeding period is when the bucks are with does and as the term is used "locked down" i like hunting 10-14 days before as the bucks arn't chasing but are checking doe groups looking for the first one to come into heat. watching bucks chase does all over is fun but as its bow season i want them as perdictiable an not wired up as possible! thats why i really hope they open it oct 1 next year as bucks can still be in their summer patterns an in bachlor groups. no more i saw him all summer then he dissappeared! two weeks before the season!
  21. http://www.nwtf.org/ thats the national site, http://www.nwtf.org/in_your_state/lists.php?STATE=NY i sugesst you find a local chapter thru a banquet and join an active chapter(ask the regional director which are active!!. the corn seed is given out by chapter which then gives the allotments out. I belong to the niagara frontier chapter. each member that wanted seed(yes i had to talk to a chapter officer to sign up) got 4 bags of rr corn this year. they have a state chapter project called project appleseed as well that gave out crabapple seedlings with tree tube protectors stakes and fertalizer tabs as well. the also have a seed program for a clover mix that casts you 1/4 of what a bag would normally go for. not to mention the national programs (project help)that give discounts on tree and shrub and plot seed that will grow in your specfic area. I f you just join and do not participate you'll miss out on a lot of good programs that just get sent to the chapter. (its like a club the more you put in the more you get out).
  22. 9 layer lasagana made with homemade sauce and sausage for the night before opening day dinner. Jerky! lots of it keep one whole deer from previous season to make it from. end up with 30 lbs approximatly..lasts 3 days : guy love it ...lol
  23. I stared 20 years ago with 1 acre of corn which was wiped out by end of november, i now plant 7-10 acres year and it last till spring greenup . the question is are you planting it as a hunting plot or as a feed field to help game thru the winter? Seed is seed you can buy uncertified oat, winter wheat, corn, ect a lot cheaper as feed. most corn grown now is rr ready guess what that gene is passed down in the seed(feed)! just do a germ test take 100 seeds and place on top of a few lawers of a damp paper towel. cover with damp paper towel. let sit for a few days keeping damp(not wet) uncover count the seeds that have begun to grow. ex 89 are growing thats 89% germ . 99 would be 99%. for a lot of us food plotters the seed costs can be significantly reduced. the only problem is you don't know the growth days 97 day corn or 115 day. join the turkey federation free roundup ready corn coated seed sized for planter plates as well, with growing date s and germ data on the tags.. Imo worth the 25$ a year membership for 4 bags corn and free seedlings (crabapple this year).
