  1. don't know about coyotes but whitetail visions(maker of october whitetails) also had "master of the black bear", and a tips and techniques series.. all were outstanding...nothing has come close since. Tinks had a few good informative videos out on habits, and quest video had some good tips in their videos as well, i believe quest was made in pa. All of the mentiond videos were from 80's, early 90's and are not the watch me shoot and buy this that are the only ones it seems comercially mass produced today.
  2. Most of the bear i have had around run when they smell or hear you. Dont think its an active den probably in the cracks among the rocks trying to stay cool.
  3. the problem is the dec controls all the enviromental problems nys faces.. the only way management will be even possible is with a seperate game commission funded by licences and robertson pittman funds. then the focus will be soley on game and fish.. not the coal burning boilers in schools, leaking gas tanks, hogweed problem,ect.. the money goes to dec but doesnt get funneled into game programs only like it should be so we only get bare bones programs and funding.
  4. i believe the info is available on the ny big buck club site. of course this only shows the counties that the people have the racks measured and entered in the books...
  5. Hope this passes..then maybe we can get a seperate game commission next!
  6. I had a nice 8 hang around in 1993 and was able to find his sheds that spring..years went by and never saw or heard of anyone getting him or even a pic of him..I was able to harvest him in 2000 as an 8 1/2 year old. Putting the sheds next to him its no mistake it the same deer! Where it was for 6 years is anyones guess.....deer do weird things.....and can survive an orange army as well!
  7. Well geno, there are some good ones around i see with binos...i really try not to disturb the bucks in the creekbottoms when its hot like it is, my cameras are just in very easy access spots right now.. i try to minimise my presence in the woods as much as i can. they'll show up at these easy spots in sept/oct like they do every year.
  8. i'd leave the limbs and move the camera, probably be a scrape there come fall...
  9. 2 different camera same model...old (like 10year old first gen cuddiebacks) still looking for some new good Replacements the new cuddies don't seem to have same quality as they use to.. I've tried some other manufactures still not happy..just hope these continue to hold up.
  10. I agree with doc, the last good videos were by whitetail visions back in late 70's early 80's taught tactics and showed them in use.. i still pull them out once or twice a year and use the things they taught to this day. Modern shows are watch me and then use this product and you can do this too!! I'd rather spend my time looking out the window watching the local deer herd feed in the hayfields.....
  11. The problem is this everyone thinks they will see older bigger bucks with ar's and its not true. Large private leases in the mid west do not provide big bucks for everyone that hunts there! dont believe me go shell out 3-5 grand on a hunt for a week and see what you come home with if anything. I know several people who have gone to canada for big buck and they come home with something in the 130 inch range (i can kill those in ny). The false hope that tv shows provide do not represent the actuall hunter. How many of us can take 3-5months a year and hunt everyday? Time in the woods is what you need to kill a big buck! they are a cautious secretive animal (some are nearly nocturnal)and the way most of us hunt(sitting in a stand) you will probably only have 1 or two walk by in your lifetime while you hunt weekends. Older bucks are tough to hunt and kill. The people that do it consistantly hunt many hrs during the season if not the whole season! not to mention months of scouting/using multiple trailcams/ ect year round. Tracking /still hunting are many's prefered method of hunting older mature deer.
  12. some new ones from a check on some cams...
  13. thats crazy expensive ... just had a friend buy 44 acres and a house/barn for 79,000. mast prime land by me is 800-1000 an acre
  14. I think this is geared toward suburbia. You cant get permission from a lot of people as they move out from the city and are afraid of everyone/thing. You might of hunted there for years and now there is a house 100 yards from your treestand..deer are still there but new owners dont want you to shoot bambi... this would let you continue to protect your own shrubs and such without needing everyone in the neighborhood knowing what your doing.
  15. sounds like you need to improve habitat on your place and let the farmers feed the game! Make your place what game will call home!
  16. Thats why ar's in high pressure areas will high grade the herd quickly!! Most hunters cant tell the difference in age of game! All that will be left are big 4 and 6's that are 3 -4- or 5 years old a little 8 will be shot at first chance... I'd rather see a sm. 8 left alone and have someone shoot the spike next to it!! The eight has a good jump on the spike and will most likely be an 8 or bigger the next year..the spike who knows?? yes it left alone with proper nutrition it might ..might become a giant. I for one would rather bet on the 8 being better the next year than wait 3-4 years for the spike to maybe be better..
  17. Its the same no matter what bow/gun shop or taxidemy shop you go to..unless its the owner your dealing with an employee that may or may not be fully trained to the owner's standard. they get in a rush and you get screwed. Happened to me 2 years ago. always went to the same shop off season and had bow looked over by owner. Had a problem with a limb delaminating just before the season, shop was busy had to order my weight limbs which took 2 weeks to come in had seasonal help replace limbs, when set back up they called and said all set. Do to distance i had my brother pick it up on way out to camp. fortunatly i was usuing my old bow. I was all excited and took new bow to try it(as i only had 2 weeks left in season) and it was all over the place... I looked it over and found the problem quickly.. the employee renocked it level off the shelf not off the dropaway rest!!! It was almost 1 1/4 in low!! I used my old bow rest of the season and took the new one in after season was over and the owner fixed it no charge apologising profusly even threw in some brodheads for my trouble.... The problem might not be the shop but the employee working there...
  18. unfortunatly the houses/barns if on the tax roll are considerd in the 500 ft rule now even if only seasonal. lot of great deer hunting in lancaster and elma on big lots 2-5 acres lowering it for bow would help control the population there.
  19. bunch for sale on cuba lake..
  20. my friend works for dec mon-thurs digging up the stuff in catt and allegeny co. been doing it for 5 years now
  21. I use luminocks with axis sst arrows..and pefer the green nocks over the red. have used them for 6 years now and wouldnt go without them. My friend tried magnetic lighted nocks that turn on passing over a magnet but to his surprise the also turn on when bouncing around in the back of his truck and the batteries died. There is a post on making your own lighted nocks on this site in do it yourself section.
  22. I just don't understand the state mandated ar's... face it if 67% of whatever numbers want it and do it vollentarially there is/would be no need to have mandatory ar's. Most areas of ny seem to be producing larger racked buck due to vollentiery harvest selection and some form of qdm land/habitat management. Glad i don't hunt in those areas where i have to count points..saw a 3 1/2 year old 4 pt that was a great buck but would not meet requirements and so passes on its large 4 pt genes... High grading the herd is what antler requirements will lead to in high pressure areas... hope you enjoy shooting your big bucks when all you see are large mature scrub bucks doing all the breeding. A 1 1/2 old 8 pt should be left go as its already an eight while a spike or 4 or 6 pt may never get more points especially if have less points lets it survive.. Genetic adaption at its finest!
  23. the lighted nocks are great! but they can break easily when hitting bone or hard ground..the battery tends to snap off and slide down the shaft. I have used them to recover two deer very easily.
