  1. he's a good one hope he sticks around till mid october for you!
  2. joe your opinions and beliefs are yours! i have never seen you write a message telling this is how it should be! many others should take your example and use it. an expression of one s opinion is fine as long as the belief that its the only way is not the driving force behind it! and the pinot is it is an individual choice!! it should not be state mandated!
  3. Bubba youbgot it right !! things change! The crossbow will become legal in regular season shortly. just like releases/and let off were accepted.. the guy down the road hunting with crossbow wont effect the way i choose to hunt!! the pureist is been dead for a long time! for those who hunt with long bow / recurve instinctual kudos to you !!! wish the state would give you your own season!!! same as the side lock flint lock muzzle loaders.. fact is i like to hunt and will utilize all equipment and seasons that are available!!!
  4. Thanks for sharing dave!! Have a great weekend yourself!!
  5. Just seems to me that the state is trying to woo the people who want trophy hunting to come to nys. Don't get me wrong i like to hunt for large racked bucks as much as anyone but, one buck limit/doe only/antler restrictions are what the hunting industry pushes for trophy animals. Maybe they should be paying my taxes. If i was polled i would want to see more mature deer, but they never ask at what cost? The polls are baised just by number of people asked and the way the questions are worded. Deep down i like to hunt for a buck(though it might not be big enough for my standards) no matter what season i'm hunting and i believe many others do too. I am not willing to give up a tag for nothing!
  6. you got a great deal on that sparyer....jelous i am...
  7. I've planted peas over an acre of them and ended up with 3 pea plants making it to produce peas. the deer will wipe them out! I have the same problem with sunflower and soybeans. you need a big acreage to have them stand a chance of making it if you have ANY KIND OF DEER POPULATION. You can try mixing them with a cover crop as to increase their chance,or plant late so the deer will be in them when hunting season is here(this will more possible if an oct bow season is established) but remember most peas/beans and such are not frost tollerent, perhaps a mix of winter wheat and peas will keep em coming,fencing/plotsaver is also an option. As for competing with the surrounding farms there can be a lot of factors, Your soil might be sour producing less palatable plants, you might not have suffient cover to make the deer feel secure(if you can see 50 or more yards into your woods after stepping 5 yards inside the woods line surrounding the field its not thick enough), Land use(is your plot seeing to much human traffic?) The good news all this is correctable!! select cutting for firewood or timber will thicken up a staging area next to your plot, proper lime and fert will sweeten your crops, closing down the atv/hiking trail will help eliminate human traffic.
  8. There is no reason to go to a 1 buck limit... i pay for tags and most of the time they go unused. What are the satistics for people who fill both buck tags? Some people do not want to shoot doe and the state is trying to force you to do this. I'd rather see an earn a buck for the second buck tag than dropping it all together. Face it, it doesnt matter how big a buck is there is something special about antlers.....weather the tag gets filled or not it still a good feeling to have that chance in your pocket! Are the price of licences going to go down if there isnt a buck tag to go with them?
  9. Here is an 8 1/2 year old buck i was lucky enought to get this is without ar's... 8 1/2 in catt county one of the heaviest hunted counties nys has. old bucks are out there they hide!! right spot right time... my experiance tells me that those that want ar's are looking to stockplie big bucks for easy hunting.. truth is an area will only support maybe 1 big buck 140+ i on 160 acres and without adequate doe harvest will never reach their potental. Big dominant bucks they dont get along with each other,. the big bucks are out there... every spring big ones are found dead winter kill/old age. Hunter density and land use/ ownership have a much bigger effect than you realize. nys does not have large family farms like the mid west 50 acre avg. vs 400 acre avg. Forcing taxpayers to wait on a buck with more than 4 on a side is just nuts.. I know what my property can hold and am far ahead of the dec on knowing the local deer population. this should be a private decision..not state mandated.
  10. Yes there are those who hunt to hunt, and some have evolved into that type of hunter and doe is tasty! but just about anyone that started hunting it was their 1st buck they were after, a first year hunter will usually take a sm. buck over a doe everytime.
  11. "If people want large racks go to where the habitat supports it...the midwest".. its not the habitat its the hunter denisity. face it 1 person hunting 400 acres is a far cry from 20 or more hunting the same size in ny... No matter if you pass the little ones with ar.. the hunter density is to high so now these 2 year olds have 8pt and get shot(due to hunter density a lot get shot!) so now the 2 year old 6 pt makes it thru till next year but remains an 6 and does a lot of breeding. when hunter densities are high the inital ar will boost 2 yr old huntable bucks but with in a few short years the "high grading" will show itself rather quickly. For those large farms that can limit access yes they can have bigger deer on their property but it is due to limiting hunters per acre than passing little bucks. 5 hunters harvisting 5 bucks on 400 acres allows a lot of deer to make it thru. 20 hunters hunting the same and everyone shooting a buck..not much makes it thru to get bigger next year. Everyone hunts to get a buck! if deer didn't have horns how many would still hunt as hard as they do or at all?
  12. Deer are sacred animal to a lot of hunters, beat into them by magazines/tv hunting shows/ect... big bucks a coveted beyond belief to the point of poaching/night hunting by some. A lot of posting wan initally done for safety of the land owners animals/family/friends.. those that post for this reason usually will give you permission usually with some restrictions. the second type of poster is trying to protect his game permission will be denied everytime. The local problem is easy to aviod..i can tell every camp around my place..there is a chain across the driveway! when its down they are out up and they are no where around. This is a huge tipp off to your tresspassers!! with out a chain up they have to think..did they just run into town?when will they be back? they locals around here joke about the people protecting their property will a chain.. you might want to have a trusted neighbor drive in your drive after a light snow just to leave tire tracks.. the deterrent of not knowing if someone is home is a lot stronger than any posted sign or chain.
  13. well without ar's big bucks are taken every year.. maybe you dont see them in your area because they are a different animal in needs and habits! traditional hunting techiques do not work for mature bucks. Nys is in the top 15 states for pope and young entries, so someone is getting them. What are ar's for other than to grow big antlers? if that is so important to you there are game farms that will be happy for your buisness. For us normal hunters a big buck once in a lifetime is the normal. and passing younger ones will not stockplie big bucks in your area.
  14. Thing is the 500' rule is in effect and rifle allowed in my area for over 5 years.. and i only remember 1 story of someone being shot in a house and the guy was like 75 yards from it. so 500 foot is for sound? no to disturb people , it should be lowered for bow and common scenc esays not to shoot toward a structure ..or another hunter for that matter ..if 500' is so safe why allow a hunter to be 500' from another..???
  15. I think if the deer will herd has other prefered food they will got to that until it is gone. I watched all winter as deer walked thru a standing cornfield of the neighbors to get to mine about a 1/2 mile away. What was the difference in corn? must of tasted different to the deer... m neighbors corn stood all winter and spring untouched..and is now plowed under.
  16. same deer! when injury was fresh was holding up the stump..now the muscle has atrophyed the legs hangs lower.. had a 3 legged buck a few years back,,made it from one hunting season to the next and then neighbor took it.
  17. Well by your own post "occupation or use"..used is storage so illegal..... And how about people who own property 500" wide? put a camp on either side with a cabins set back in a bit and that property is unhuntalble under todays law. Yes i see a lot of 5 acre camps with people hunting there and if you measured off 500" they all are hunting illegal unless they have permission of course. 500 ft is a long way 160 or so yards.. some of my best hunting is 50 yards from my house and i'm sure it is for a lot of others near camps.. heck go 50 yards in to my woods and you cant even see the house! so how is an arrow a danger...yes i know they can deflect but i can put my back against the house structure and shoot away from it. 160yards away a herd of elephants can go thru and never be seen especially if your back is toward the structure!. Anyone with any kind of common sence knows 500' shooting towards any structure is not far enough with any implement...
  18. here is a new comparable 110 gallon sprayer, the one your looking at is 200 gallon http://mower-blades.agrisupply.com/search?p=R&srid=S10%2d6&lbc=agrisupply&w=sprayers&url=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2eagrisupply%2ecom%2fproduct%2easp%3fpn%3d75725&rk=14&uid=414998855&sid=2&ts=ajax&rsc=9eRepLW3aoTYpdrE&method=and&isort=score&view=grid
  19. What if you own your property first and the new neighbor built his house and barn set back off the road almost 400' and 25'(min allowed by zoning law)from the property line(wanted it back in the woods for privacy). so i lose a 425' by 100 ' area of my land to hunt(and more if you figure you don't want to be shooting around the driveway) which happens to include the main deer crossing at the top of a ravine, and a good portion of an existing food plot. thats almost an acre land lost for hunting ! the owner is seasonal(late spring, summer till early fall) and woodchucks abound in the edge of the food plot behind his barn. i can't get permission because he is an animal lover doesn't care that i hunt but no where near his property... so my food plot location is now unhuntable and unplantable do to the chucks.. 150' for a bow no problem!
  20. Actually that piece belongs to a friend of mine..and he had the property first the building was built later in a urban sprall that sent land values soring.. fact is 150' is still pretty far when in thick woods..can't see an arrow making it even if shot directly at the building... And there are a lot of great deer as since the existing rules no hunting has happened there in over 10 years. old mature bucks are hopefully soon to be taken!!
  21. heck you buy it for 500$ and i'll give you the 650$
  22. Seroiusly 500$ your nuts if you don't take it the boom alone ..i'm guessing is a 30' fold up... the rig new is over 1500$.. tips are about 5$ apiece for flood jets... man i'd kill for a rig like that i have to borrow my buddies.....
  23. Joe, the problem is this ..unless you want every hunter in the woods hunting with you in the "Dacks" where you hunt. one must realise that tracking/stalking game isnt possible legally in most areas of the state..lot of small properties and property lines posted everywhere. So creating an ambush site and waitng is the best form of hunting much of the state has. I'd love to follow the big track and catch up to my quarry..but land use restricts me to what i can do. And as much as i love to hunt going 300+ miles to hunt where i have the abilty to hunt like that(tracking, stalking) isn't feasable or practical when i have game close by to get
  24. OK you own a 2 1/2 acre lot..against a buisness. they don't allow hunting(liablity issues) the deer walk thru the center of your property but you cannot get away 500" from their block building. now you can hunt your own land with out needing permission of your neighbor. Of course i hope you drop it because it will probably leave your property to die....
