  1. As a side note savage axis combo scope was cheap junk that cross hairs shifted inside. When I changed it out I found the rings were stripped on 2 screws . I put on new base and rings. Better safe than sorry. I always put on steel rings.
  2. Wife has savage axis I in 243. Scope was junk . Figure an upgrade in the cost. Wife gets inch and half groups with federal blue box . Fed fusion she gets an inch. I can get it down to .75 at 100. Trigger is ok . Guessing trigger is somewhere close to 5 lbs. Lots of travel. I would look for axis 2. I like the accutrigger. I have it on my 204 ruger. Have no info on the ruger American. 243 will kill deer. I have a few kills under my belt with that caliber. Stick to the 95 grain bullets for deer. I would recommend for deer a premium bullet for penatration. I would personally avoid balistic tips on deer size game. 7/08 In my opinion balisticly is the better choice for deer. As with all hunting calibers it's about shot placement.
  3. I'm running 2 moultrie. One is at least 10 years old runs on c batteries. That ran last year November until battery died in August. I have newr camera 50i I think and batteries are ok just doesn't take greatest pics and I think it misses pictures at times. Failure to activate. Sounds like you have a ground issue drawing down those 2 batteries. Time for new camera
  4. I haven't hunted there in years. Never hunted deer. They had put and take pheasant hunting. I use to go up there with my gsp. A lot of land and yes I did see deer and a couple of brutes. Typical big farm lands . Small brush lots and big fields. Use to be first come first serve stand in line for a parcel. Don't know how they do deer hunting . Pheasants they opened at 7 am.
  5. Love that he made a scrape on the rug ..... that's gonna stink
  6. January 5th at 11:30 Frans landing . Got it . I'm in .
  7. Couldn't just leave the knife alone. Took it out to garage and hit it with some buffing compound. Buffing wheel cleaned it up a little better. Had to resharpen when I was done . Turns out it's an older edge mark knife. German steele. As I recall local stores sold them for 25 bucks or so. Nothing valuable. Some older models actually had stag handles. I don't know how to tell. Guess I will look for a sheath for it .. might make it a tool box knife keep in the tractor.
  8. My wife thinks I am paranoid . I carry all the time . Watch people always have an out sit back against the wall at restaurants look for exits.. I avoid malls and shopping at peak trouble times . Not to long ago wife and I are sitting at a hole in the wall restaurant having lunch . A young man walks in to pick up food. I look up notice his hands clutching the front of his pants as he walks in. Young man maybe 18 . Hoodie up earbuds in pants hanging down . Pulls out a roll of cash to pay ,and almost drops the gun stuffed in his pants. Look at wife and she is looking at him over her shoulder. He is nervous and looking around I take the wife's hand to get her to look back at me . Told her to ignore it . He pays and rushes out. She asks me how I knew to watch him lol. I doubt he was old enough to have a pistol permit . Nobody I know carrying glock loose in pants and no holster. I did take a pic of him and his plate when he left . Turned it over to a trooper friend.
  9. Friend had a stocked pond down the road from an amish farm . Kids showed up one day fishing . Wife thought it was cute and let them fish no harm no fowl . A week later the whole community showed up and fishing . Killed every fish big and small. He came home to what he described as looking like an amish barn raising. He went out to make them go and the men all crowded around the like a street fight and started yelling at him in German or whatever it is. Had to call cops . Troopers and scherrifs showed up they all started to leave. They were all told to leave and never come back as they pulled out one at time. Deputy said he had to do it or they would be back. Amish mafia is real. Never heard a good story about them . They don't pay taxes don't follow laws and rules , play dumb and hide behind religion. I imagine there is some good amish families but I have yet to meet one. My sil was a large animal vet in Canadagua... she handled so many animal cruelty calls on them for police. The story's of horses down on the side of the roads would make your blood boil.
  10. I'm in for what ever .. but I hate parking in downtown corning.
  11. Some dandies.... the climate has changed in the last 20 years or so .More does killed. Most people are letting small bucks go . I think we are seeing the beginning of the good old days
  12. I have used all kinds of stones ,diamond hones ,lanski/gatco, ceramics. My uncle has raved about his work sharp and how great it is . He use to have me sharpen all his knives . His buck hunter knife use to come to me looking like a serrated steak knife. I like to think I'm better than average at sharpening knives and tools. This year my wife gave me a work sharp ken onion addition for Christmas. I have watched the videos and infomercials. I was Intrigued. Box comes with 5 belts , sharpener , and manual. Read the manual brushed up on a couple videos.. Now to find a test subject.... I'm not going to start out with my fine Case knives or even a buck or my wife's kitchen knives .. My gramps always taught me to check out gut piles when ever you see one . Over the years I bet I have picked up a dozen or so knives on stateland . Had one down in the basement I found stabbed into the ground next to a large gut pile. Cheap carbon steele fake stag handle. Rusted and stained. Perfect !. Quick clean up remove grit from storage non chlorinated brake clean to remove oil . Inspect blade starting with a slight folded edge and rounded tip. Not terrible. Starting with coarse belt . 10 swipes both sides ... cleaned up well . Still didn't knock the shoulders off the old profile. Perhaps I should have started extra course. 8 more swipes each side now we are getting somewhere. Moved onto medium belt . 10 swipes each side . Getting there except I have a little burr. 5 swipes each side alternating sides. Nice.. shaving hair. Switch to fine belt . 10 swipes alternating . Wow... this thang is a razor. It's a hunting knife know need to go any further. I'm impressed. 20 minutes and a razor. Would have taken longer with stones. I will work on tip profile at some point. I expect with a higher quality steele it would have taken more work . But then again it might not of had been damaged as bad or left stabbed into the ground. This is the after pic.
  13. My lovely wife got me a work sharp sharpener Ken onion addition and some redhead mid weight long underwear, 2 pair of smart wool socks. Great haul. We opened our gifts last night after. A nice dinner and a bottle of wine. Was kind of nice to unwind after all the festive Christmas eve.
  14. Nope not one dog can do it all. Love gsp great grouse pheasants and early ducks and geese. Rabbits I would have to go to beagle . Labrador retriever does it all except rabbits and grouse. Nope not one dog I have ever seen can do it all.
  15. Well change of plans for Christmas dinner. My wife likes seafood pasta so it's going to be shrimp and scallops alfredo sauce over linguine noodles . Crusty Italian bread salad and a nice dry white.
  16. I use a little bit of everything flies ,eggs, jigs, beads soft plastics.
