erussell
why do gun hunters hate bow hunters? The most common excuse that ive heard is, "You bow hunters shoot all the deer before gun season starts. We did a 30 man drive 1st day and only killed 2 doe"? Enough said My personal fav one is, " Last yr we shot 20 deer off this hill then those bowhunters started hunting this yr and we havent seen a thing" Seriously 20 deer, true story,. I just kind of smiled and shook my head! Anyhow, Im an avid deer hunter. Im in the woods from first day of bow to last day of muzzle. Weapon of choice is just an means to an end, the real test of a good hunter is getting the deer close enough to kill whether it be the chess match of bowhunting or the grand theft auto of deer driving. Each is a skill that is learned through trial and error. If your not going to put in the time to learn the game dont blame me for your lack of hunting prowess. Doc
why do gun hunters hate bow hunters? Back in the old days, there were darn few of us, and we weren't all that successful. We were looked at by the gun-hunting community as strictly a harmless little band of odd hunters who really didn't affect anything or ever actually get anything. Then along came the compound bow, and the numbers grew in a huge way, and success rates began to sky-rocket. All of a sudden, gun-hunters are regularly seeing pictures and articles of huge bucks being taken by archers. Everyone now knows somebody or a bunch of somebodys that have taken a deer with a bow, and even some who regularly take a buck with a bow. They look on TV and it looks absolutely easy to take big bucks with a bow. Now they see bow ads that depict bows as a space-age weapon that can perform all kinds of accuracy, power and devastation. It could be that given all these out-of-scale claims and biased portrayal of bowhunting, that people are beginning to think that we no longer really need any kind of special seasons. In fact I have heard that sentiment expressed on this forum more than a few times. Also, as time has gone by, we have pushed for and received much longer seasons, and increased bag limits and the use of DMPs, and all kinds of other "goodies". These things have not gone un-noticed by the gun-hunters. Many times these additional benefits have not been matched by corresponding benefits for gun hunters. I'm sure they get the feeling that all this stuff is happening in a one-sided fashion. Guys that aren't involved with anything relating to bowhunting can easily begin to believe some of this hype, and they have no real experience to put it all back into true perspective. So, maybe they begin to think that we are getting too much of a break. Maybe they really do believe that we are cherry-picking the best of the best bucks before they get a chance at them. Maybe they see all the legislative changes as benefitting bowhunters only. Remember .... just because they may have incorrect perceptions doesn't mean that those perceptions do not color their attitudes. As our numbers grow and our equipment improves, and the manufacturer's hype continues to clog the TV airways, this feeling that we are getting unfair advantages might continue to grow along with the dislike for bowhunters. We may even begin to see some regulatory challenges that try to level the playing field in their eyes. Who knows? After all, we still are in the minority. growalot
IMO it's a tad bit simpler than that...it's the age old story of haves and have nots....gunners who don't hunt archery think archers have all the advantage and they want it with out working for it...period Now if the DEC changed dates and put gun season first...even though most archers gun hunt as well....would think gunners have the advantage over their preferred archery and they'd want that time and to put it politely would ...complain just as hard as the gunners do now.. One that doesn't hunt would have to stand back and say why? deer don't migrate out of state during those times....because of one three letter word...RUT......which goes to Docs....assertion of media hype I equate it to kids in a sand box with a pail and just one shovel....every body wants the shovel Now!!! This plays out in every thing in life...money vs none private ed vs public..and on and on...HUMAN NATURE
fasteddie
I wonder how many of the hardened gun hunters will change their tune when crossbows are allowed in all seasons .
WNYBuckHunter
I wonder how many of the hardened gun hunters will change their tune when crossbows are allowed in all seasons . I forsee alot of them hitting the archery woods the first season or two and then giving it up when they realize a crossbow is no good for shooting at a running deer 50+ yards away. Either that, or many will fall in love with the challenge of getting that close and will end up picking up a vertical bow that weighs less and isnt so clunky and difficult to load/reload.

WNYBuckHunter
Im sure they will too. Shoot, I already know of guys that try it with vertical bows. IMO, I dont see many "gun hunters" that hate bow hunters, but I do hear about and see quite a few ding dongs that just want something to complain about or blame their lack of success on. They figure that bow hunters are to blame because they dont see any deer on the two or three weekends a year that they crawl out of the bar long enough to get to their stand and fall asleep. I know guys that stop off at the Restaurants for breakfast before heading to the woods . You can tell that they did by the smell of grease on their clothes . They aren't as careful as bow hunters in that respect . My opinion !
WNYBuckHunter
I know bow hunters that go into the woods after a night of drinking and still reek like booze, or go to breakfast with the smell of grease and bacon on them.

ants
The guy is just a GOOF!! dont worry about it . If he had his way,he (and his ilk) would be able to hunt deer with rifles, from January till January.... Goofs!!! They can rationalize all they want... When they bash bow hunters they are just lazy GOOFS!!!. FYI.... Its 100 times easier to take a deer with a crossbow than it is with a regualr bow....But lets not talk about that... Pygmy
Hey...Lambshitz spam post reminds me of my last trip to the heart of the dark continent.. The purpose of the expedition was to explore the remote and relatively unknown Viagra River basin, which is nestled in the heart of deepest, darkest Rwanda between the Levitra Mountain Range, and the vast, inpenetrable Cialis Swamp. It was led by Dr. Elliot Pfizer, and I went along to hunt game animals to provide food for the expedition. This trip resulted in the discovery of the famous Viagra Falls, which has since become a popular honeymoon destination for sexually dysfunctional chimpanzees.. It was on this journey that we encountered the primative Slipadictomee tribe, a small group of homosexual natives that inhabit the region.. Since they refuse to have sex with women, the tribe is rapidly becoming extinct. Thier only recruitment comes from hairdressers and interior decorators that they kidnap from the neighboring Hairybobo tribe, using thier own paramilitary group, known as the Rwanda Rump Rangers. The Slipadictomees live in mud huts, but they are all very neat and clean and all have matching drapes and carpets. Thier Afro hairdos are PERFECT... Our mascot on this expedition was a psychotic, semi-domesticated mountain gorilla named KUMQUAT, who bore a striking resemblance to Mike Tyson.. One night Kumquat got into some fermented coconut juice and went bonkers, and proceeded to bite the ears off from all the native packers. It really did not seem to bother them all that much to lose thier ears, except for one poor nearsighted fellow who could no longer wear his eyeglasses..

pistolp71
2 Funny, I had a guy at Suffolk Archers asking me to get into the whole nuisance permit thing saying how it is great to hunt year round. He shoots doe all the time, he says. I did not explain the fact that I hunt for mature deer as I did not think that he would understand... Yeah, I've been asked many times over the years. No thanks. That certainly is not hunting, that's what I would have said to him. Killing pregnant does and does with fawns in the summer is just not cool. Huh!...and I thought you guys were REAL hunters ..... For a real hunt would learn to control that spastic colon...... and position his buttocks in such away as to perform a darn good grunt call...I'm so disappointed... If I didn't do it , they would be going into someone else's freezer . The doe aren't pregnant in mid-July or august . We do it in the Pittsford / Mendon area .
