The Expanded Antler Restrictions - Who is excited?

Your wrong, I'm well aware that its just one by products of a properly managed and age diverse herd. The area's with AR's are not like some of these area's y'all hunt where the soil pukes with nutrients and there are farms all over the place. The AR zones have more hunters, stress, pressure, and other factors that those up further North do not see. I want to see the deer population thrive, and once my kids are old enough they will have something to hunt. Half the thrill is the chance to see a big guy out there, and when they do not exists or are so rare its considered a myth its clear there is a problem with the age structure and things need to change. More meat, bigger deer, bigger antlers, more action in the woods, healthier herd... It works in the zones that have it, it will work in the zones that are getting it and it works in other states that have implemented it. Its it the best way, nope, but its a start.

I agree... it's a start in areas where age structure and buck:doe population are out of whack... but that isn't everywhere... so you can't just willy nilly impose AR's everywhere especially a 3 on a side AR and expect guys to get all excited about it... it seems to be working in some areas, but another form of AR might need to be used to get the proper results in other areas... I wouldn't be particularly excited about a 3 on a side AR in my area... much like Steve B's area... it would do little to protect yearlings. It would however probably do wonders for knocking down the 6-point yearling population that I have where I hunt.

why dance around this. If the brass ring is so easily reached and the benefits so great. Ban all bone hunting for 3 years then make the buck tags on a lottery draw like some of the western states do with their elk. get in an 'any buck' or 'trophy buck' draw. If the importance of this to the herd is so great hunting should take second seat. If you don't draw...shot does...if you cant hunt in an area with permits, stay home.

I'd go for that!

Of course that would work but NY hunters would not accept that program with out a lot of work and education and even then....

But we know that right now around 60% of New York hunters support antler restrictions to protect yearling bucks with out any education or work.

So since we have a well supported proven program it’s just a matter of modifying the definition of a legal buck in the hunting regulations; Just a few words.

In the current AR areas 77 to 90% of the hunters find continuing the program acceptable.

So the Majority wants it, those who have it want to continue it and it is proven to work common sense! Sounds like a winner.

TO the squirrel hunter- once your see the big bucks running by while squirrel hunting, I guarantee you will be back out deer hunting!

BTW AS STATED BEFORE THERE WILL BE NO 3 POINT RULE FOR CENTRAL AND WESTERN NY (take note JOE SERVELLO)

The way I see it is this....I am an out of state property owner, who spends big $ to own property in CNY and pays taxes to the state of NY and as far as I see it,YES,I DO shoot spikes and prongs and doe.....to fill my need for "the thrill of the hunt and to fill my freezer" here in Pa..

I see what AR did to PA....very nice bucks.....if thats what you hunt for.I care about filling the freezer personally and the hunt means alot as well as spending time at camp with "the boys". Why must we always limit it to restrictions on "BIG BUCKS" ...who cares what is on it's head? Oh,you trophy hunters....well then, good for you,and more power to ya. I did my trophy hunting, years ago and can show the mounts.

Like I said, good for YOU. I hunt and shoot what the LAW states I can, period. You don't like it? Oops..my bad. You want to hunt big trophy buck,I have no problem with that, but don't tell me or judge me because I can shoot whatever I want to within the law.

Yeah I was quite sure this area wouldn't be on the list. Not that it would have made a difference to me... hence, the reason I wouldn't be excited.. :)

Another guy that just thinks its about big bucks... it's a shame what QDM has done to a lot of hunters by selling a good management idea as a trophy producing program. Although it got many of you to pay attention, it tainted a very sound management concept. I wish they would go back to promoting it as a herd benefit instead of a hunter benefit, because most of you just aren't getting it.

So then because you don't have or take the time to hunt... good conservation efforts should be put aside to meet your needs? The idea of good deer management, which includes yearling buck protection.. should not take a back seat to any hunters' (yours or my) ability to get in the woods.

Good management? For who? The ..... bone hunter and the game commission. Get real. It's commerse through and through.

The fact that new york or hunting shows chooses to make it commercial doesn't change the validity of the concept... if you don't like the commercialism then argue for the concept... a proven concept by the way, whether you like it or not.

Good deer what?

Seems they been doing well for alot of years in NY. But now, some guys want big buck management and want to "push" all the meat hunters into it at the same time. That's the way I see it.Sorry if you look at it a different way. I wont change the way I see it.....as far as taking time to to hunt, dare you judge me? WOW! Who are you ,sir?

All I am stating is,if you are a big buck hunter, good for for you. But don't tell me what it is.

No.. I agree it has become something that it was not suppose to be in some respects... as for pushing meat hunters out of the way.. there are more antlerless permits than ever before, so that argument doesn't was with me... I did not judge you by your time to hunt.. I mearly said that conservation efforts are not and never should be dependent on how many days any individual hunter has to hunt... the fact that you hunt 1 week a year is your problem... not conservations.

I care not to argue with you,nor do I wish to take it there.I respect your comment and am just stating my opinion on the matter.

I hunt more than a week but,as such, alot of us do not get to spend the time others do get afield. The AR's don't work for everyone....as seen in other topics.

When you start knitting are you going straight for the challenge like a sweater or are you starting with socks first?

Yes, knitting sounds good. Maybe I'll make cute little blaze orange antler cozies for all the 1.5's to protect them from knuckle dragging mouth breathers, like myself.

Think about this...you have 1 week to hunt......vacation time. Put meat in the freezer,eh?

Not me.. I hunt for a whole different reason and have been for the last 18 years... I haven't shot a small buck in all those years and have never gone without venison. passing on yearling bucks is way harder than getting venison. And I'm not sure why you think I care about what you hunt... I don't... I only care about what I believe to be good conservation efforts and will continue to be in favor of such... I don't worry myself about what others are doing or want to do... my opinions are only based on my thoughts of deer management concepts.

I try to step up my game, but it's hopeless. I lack even the basic skill to consistently kill prenatal fawns. I may start shooting the neighbor's holsteins, supposing they meet minimum horn width restrictions, of course.

Oh I think it would make a big difference to you. When everyone stops harvesting the yearlings it is amazing what type of bucks are seen and harvested. That is the thing when we all practice we all benefit. The little land owner, state land hunter and the huge farm with food plots. It really levels the playing field.

Thats the kind of thing that I haven't seemed to be able to make some of you understand... I have never had a problem finding and killing big bucks.. the idea of any conservation effort proposed by New York that is just to produce more big bucks for hunters to kill does not interest me in the least... my concern for any AR is strictly from a management point of view...specifically buck age structure and it's benefit to herd management for future hunters... My love of bigger bucks come from the challenge that it gives me to hunt a mature deer, and there will always be at least one somewhere in NY for me to hunt. Good deer management is just smart and makes sense... but get excited about it as it pertains to my personal hunting?... Nah... there are far more important things to me personally than having more big bucks to kill or even hunting for that matter... it's just an enjoyable pastime.

In 3K there last year there was only about 800 permit the same the year before. There are guy's out there that haven't got a permit in 3 or 4 years let alone a buck sence the antler restriction came in!! let me tell you the deer heard has not improved any!! From what I've seen it just added more pouching and jack lighting!! If it wasn't for the either sex tag that comes with the bow stamp I would have been meatlees the last 4 years!!

You do not want to kill big bucks!!! Kill the first 3 point that comes along, leave the big bucks for me. Thankyou for your support! :DuckHuntingSmiley: AR's do not make big racks ( Im talking B+C racks ) they make older bucks, and more bucks that will survive the season. You may or may not have a bummer season the first yr of implementation but it would only get better after that. My wifes cousins own 100 acreas in PA.The last 5 yrs they have all ( all 6 of them ) harvested 8 points. Two were in the 130's. I asked them what they thought about AR and they said at first they were mad because they werent seeing any results for the first few yrs. Then they said it was like a switch was turned on and there were bucks everywhere.

I know that down to camp a few different Pa guys bought land around the area. The ones I met I had to ask what was the sudden urge for Pa guys to make a move to hunt NY. Response from all of them was the same AR ruined the hunting in PA. Guess what, the last couple years they have not returned that I noticed. And one place is up for sale if that means anything.

Here are a few of the ugliest bucks on my trail cams over the last few years. Which one is No. 1 ugliest buck in your opinion? Will they ever be great animals, ones that we dream about?

    • By nyslowhand
Interesting article in latest issue of NYON (11/25/16) about AR by one of this forum's member, Buckstopshere. Article, actually more of an editorial opinion is entitled "Making a point on antler restrictions". Buckstopshere, please correct me if I'm interpreting your opinion incorrectly!
The crux of his opinion against any AR, mandatory or voluntary is that shooting younger bucks allows the 2+yo bucks to develop & grow at least another year. Very interesting concept which has some merit! Although the theory is somewhat counter-intuitive, culling the younger bucks to have bigger, mature bucks around your area. I've actually done this occasionally in the past if I've seen an overabundance of younger bucks on summertime trail cam photos or during bow season. Problem is, we all know exactly why we hunt, especially during the rut - those big, old bucks!! Not a lot of bow hunters would tag-out on a smaller buck and then sit out the rut or continue hunting with the antlerless/DMP tag only.
I do agree with the author about mandated AR taking away the hunter's choice or options. Do NOT agree with his disdain for the DEC's campaign to educate hunters about voluntary passing on smaller bucks to allow older (2+yo) bucks to mature or develop more. This is actually something I suggested to the DEC when they were soliciting input about deer management. Basically to not impose statewide regulations with no regard for the hunter's choice of harvest. Also suggested they (DEC) educate the hunting community about doe and buck management and let the hunters decide and micro manage their specific locations. This education campaign is not a shaming ploy as the author suggests, merely an instructional tool.IMHO, it's more of a - harvest what you want, but just so you're aware shooting younger bucks might reduce the number of BBs eventually. But by all means, enjoy deer hunting as you would.
Anyone else see this article? Agree with the author? Am I full of crap?

As expected some PA bucks have become quite resourceful in response to AR's.

After all of this talk about ARs and how a state wide 3 pt rule might go into effect, I want to get opinions about this AR. First of all I want to say that I think the 3 pt rule makes no sense. It lets the superior 1.5 yr olds, ie 5 pts, 6pts, 7 pts and 8pts get shot.  And lets the spikes to 4 pts live.  This is my take, why not have an AR that you can shoot any buck that has a single point, ie a spike, 3 pt, or anything that has a single point on one side, or the buck has to have 4 pts or better on one side.  This lets the superior 1.5 year olds live and takes out the "junk" bucks.  This also lets all the "meat" hunters shoot the spikes. and lets a lot of 1.5 yr olds live.  I would much rather have this kind of restriction than a 3pt restriction.  Thoughts?

I remember this was a hot topic in the past, but lets keep it nice and clean :-*
Antler Restrictions - What are your thoughts? Is it working? Do bucks that are spikes grow to be bigger bucks with bigger racks next year?
