What could have made this pile of pinecons?

As im walking back to the house i came across this pile of pinecones sitting at the base of the tree. Never saw this before. Any ideas as to what could have caused this?

I have seen them eat everything from apples to corn, and I've seen them stash it all in different places almost always on the ground.

Haven't seen any red ones around just plain old grey ones. Bigfoot? Hmmmm...

I have the same pine tree in front of my house,A squirrel is hoarding them in that spot.They eat them the same way we eat corn on the cob.They sit on a branch outside my bedroom window and eat them,sounds like someone sand papering a 2x4 and then leave the husk behind.

Is there large piles of scat on the ground? I have several pines like this around home and the porcupines are doing it. Sat there and watched them once last year in my stand. Kept me occupied to say the least.

If you look at the lower right side you see what remains of the husk after the animal devours it.Just leaves a thin brown cob.

I have watched red squirrels run around a tree dropping every cone on the thing, then they go around and pile them up. Very noisy and annoying when your trying to hunt!

My daughter made that same pile in our back yard so I don't mow them over !!! For days I was wondering what in earth did it...

some of the best hunts durring my college career was that of a few buddings hiking the red pin stads and shooting tons of red squirells, cleaned, browned in a pan, then tossed in tomatoe sauce for awhile..............not bad

+1, reds are nuerotic about cutiing all the cones down around my house. They are out there all day long for weeks on end till they are all out of the tree. There are a few Middens behind my house in the pine's that are waist high.

Also a useless fact, a group of squirrels is called a dray or a scurry. In case you were wondering.
