Gosh geno, i sure am pulling for you but i have to admit the most disturbing part of the story is the lack of blood on the shaft. Just can't see how an arrow can zip through the lungs and not leave blood especially on the fletches.. Hope i'm wrong and you post some happy pics in the morning..

Even a bad gut shot leaves clear liquid, one smell and you know its time to go to bed ,and go out in A.M. Which still has hair and a trace of blood.. Good Luck though just doesnt sound right.

"Sethro02' when you test the rage titanium extreme turn the light down a little, when the stainless steel blades deploy and hit the titanium ferrule you see a very bright spark.pretty cool lighting up a deer in low light with them." Geno your shooting the Rage Extremes I believe? I found this on Archery Talk.....probably explains the sparks

wow i would not have thought that, yes i am... very interesting. thank you for the post Rich

Not to be a bummer never killed a deer with no blood on arrow,, They are meant to cause massive bleading as you know,, Hair not good. High back strap, still blood on arrow ..Sounds like a miss confusion to me ,,

100% dark deer hair all in my broad head...

after seeing Rich's post, maybe what i am thinking is i barley nicked him thus deploying the rage and snagging hair on the way, they spark maybe from hitting the log and it happened so quick that it appeared to spark when it hit the deer? the only factor is the repetitive gargling...

Sounds like ,Low brisket shot..

shot was def high if anything. the spark occurred behind the deer which made it look right above the deer from my angle. if it hit low the spark would have been behind the deer and i may not have even seen it.

oh no i did not think that at all, no worries... i appreciate all the input, the lack of blood on the arrow concerns me as well and makes me think i just nipped him. the sounds i heard i can not put my finger on. he was standing for minutes on this one trail at a stand still, if there is no blood anywhere on there he was not hit then, he was just nipped. he had plenty of time to bleed pretty well if he was hit so it should not be hard at all to figure out. ill update tomorrow, off to a sleepless night and a early start

I think you hit your deer harder than you think. The idea that the deployed blades striking the ferrel makes some sense. But, to see something like that would indicate to me anyway some pretty low light conditions so I bet when you go back in the morning you find much more sign in the light of day. The deer standing around with tail down is also puzzling. A deer that big would have headed for high timber at the first sign of trouble in my mind. The gargling noise sounds like lung filling up with blood. You might have caught him high in the lungs. Good luck in the morning. We will all be pulling for you!

Hope im wrong here but i believe the noise you heard was of him in pain!! Trust me after raising deer for 17 years i know deer do feel pain and react to it with noise and body movements. I believe you hit him high either through the loin or just enough across the back to cut him. Good Luck either way but i think that buck will live to see another day!

If you had a pass through you would have blood on the shaft and vanes. Is it possible when you say you heard two noises that the first could have been a branch and the second the log? Definatley go check things over in the am. Hopefully the rain holds off for you as well but I think you grazed him and nothing more without blood on the arrow. This might actually be a blessing as well. If you grazed him he lives on for another day, if hes wounded and you cant find him thats every hunters nightmare. I would much prefer a clean miss or very worst case a graze than a bad suffering shot. Chin up man

Ive seen this scenario before dont doubt at all it could happen again. Friend of mine made a very steep shot like geno and was shooting fixed blades and one blade was enough to cut through a seam in the ribs knick a lung and kill a deer. We were baffled his broadhead was clean no blood just fur, but we had a blood trail. Found the deer a few hundred yards away. The deer had about a 5 inch gash and when we were butchering it we could see where the blade sliced through a seam in the ribs... call it a lucky shot.

I think that gargle sound is a good thing. Sounds like the lungs filling with blood. I have taken a few, with bow, that made that sound and they didn't go far. One of them acted like he wasn't even hit. I remember, after i shot, he bounded and looked back for a few seconds then started browsing! He started to walk away, like nothing happened and then just fell over, kicked a few times and that was it.

I think your in for a good surprise this morning. Good luck.

Deer make a whole variety of sounds including a very low gutteral bleat which maybe could be described as a "gargling sound".

Regarding the arrow, you say there was no blood. How about other things like fat, grease, or any other material other than the normal finish?

Ha-ha ..... I guess I'm probably a little late with the questions. By the time you get back on the computer, you probably will have just finished taking your deer home.
