WNYBuckHunter
but I thought it was nobodies business what I use to hunt? Why can't I use the airgun? It doesn't affect you right? Thats not at all what I have said. Dont put words into my mouth. I don't know anyone who shoots over 40 with a scope on their compound, I'm sure there is, but that's a stretch. And while yes you do need to draw a crossbow, it can stay drawn, or you can buy an xbow that draws for you... I dont care what people YOU know do, the fact of the matter is, they are used, and its no stretch. NY puts limits on all weapons, they have already had limits on what types of crossbows can be used. I'm not even entertaining that Me either.
WNYBuckHunter
They actually take longer to draw and load than a vertical bow Now that was a serious ? I had in my last post...(about the airgun arrow slinger) Its an airgun, they are not currently legal for big game in NY.
Doc
I already said what is different. A bow of any type basically has 3 things in common. 1 they all fire arrows tipped with a broadhead. 2 they all have limbs that put the string under tension. 3 the arrow is fired off of a string. I would be in opposition to an air gun during archery season, as it is no sort of bow. Now if you want to come up with some other sort of bow that shoots an arrow tipped with a broadhead off of a string put under tension of limbs, and its just as capable of killing a deer as one of the other types of bows, then sure, include it. What is it that makes any of us think that we have the authority to be stating definitions or weapons requirements as though we were reading them out of some official lawbook ..... lol. Understand that there are no individuals making those kinds of calls. As far as I know, no one has ever made a ruling on what components or actions or functions have to be present to turn something into a bow. So I guess we can try to make it sound like we have all the criteria for defining what is or is not a bow and it all might sound real nice and official. But the fact is that as far as I have seen even the dictionaries can't agree on such definitions. The distinctions of what should go into bow season seems to be absolutely wide open to anyone's interpretations these days. And there are plenty of people willing to offer up their opinions. That doesn't mean that anyone's opinion is any more valid than anyone else's. When each weapon is defined by law-makers and the DEC, then it is indeed coming from a legal source and is worthy of being listened to. Anything else is strictly an "opinion" and we all know what they say about opinions ..... lol. It would not surprise me to see people trying to cram this "air gun" thing into bow season based on what ever criteria people happen to find convenient at the time. We have plenty of precedents available for bastardizing bow seasons. It's been done before.
Doc
I can shoot farther with my (compound) bow than I can with my .45 Colt. I'm all for allowing revolvers during archery season too. Not really, but that should get some sparks flying. You laugh! ...... These are some other guys that are yet to be heard from. Wait until they get the feeling they are being discriminated against. Sure enough, someone will have to ask why they don't have a special season or get shoved into what is becoming a "diminished capability season"..... lol. Think about it... muzzleloaders have a special season, bows have a special season, those poor guys have got to be wondering why they don't have a special season ..... right? Give them some time, eventually they most likely will be trying to push their way into the "early season" too. Ha-ha-ha .... I love this thread. It is getting more and more ridiculous by the page ..... lol.

phade
That sounds about as fun as running your junk across a cheese grater. Yeah, I'm in the same boat with budget meetings and trying to retain 10% of my program's budget that was moved to other cost centers. Ever try to tell people you still want money that is paid by another cost center? That is balls on grater fun. Trying to spin the spin machine to keep it. Not much different than what we're all trying to do in this thread. Edited March 5, 2013 by phade
Doc
When did I ever say I was quoting a lawbook Doc? Go check the DEC definitions of a bow, what is legal, etc and then tell me how far off I was though. I said, "as though we were reading them out of some official lawbook". It seems if we state things in a manner that sounds like we really know what we are talking about, we expect that to be accepted as gospel. Further more, if we say it often enough, that is supposed to add credibility. Not all of us fall for that.
WNYBuckHunter
I never insinuated I was quoting anything other than my view of what a bow is either. I wouldnt keep repeating it if the people on the other side of the argument would stop trying to twist what I have already said into something completely different, or keep asking the same question over and over. I know why they do it though, they are just looking for a "gottcha" moment.

growalot
Its an airgun, they are not currently legal for big game in NY. Aahhh I thought that had changed...would it possibly be legal in small game as the law reads? PS... I only ask because of the definition of "caliber" concerning guns...not bows.... would the caliber of an arrow be enough to allow it to be used as a legal projectile from an air gun? in regard to the way NYS DEC law is written...because I'm probably missing something but it seems like a grey area. sits in trees
Lol .... I thought you were just going for a little comedic relief. I never thought you were really trying to make some kind of serious point. I mean if it wasn't meant to be funny, then it is all quite silly and irrelevant. But then most of this thread falls under that category, doesn't it? See, the problem with you guys is that you actually think you are going to change someone's opinion ..... lol. After all the volumes on this subject that have been written on this forum over the past couple of years, you don't really believe that anyone is seriously going to change their opinion do you? And if you don't believe you will change anyone's mind, then why are you wasting your time. It's all become like summer re-runs now anyway. There hasn't been a new point brought up on this subject in two years. Repeating the same nonsense over and over doesn't make any of it any more factual does it? By the way, what is this nonsense about you letting people shoot at you with a crossbow? Are you nuts? i think what antler means is he would rather have someone trying to kill him at 150yds with a crossbow than a rifle..
Doc
i think what antler means is he would rather have someone trying to kill him at 150yds with a crossbow than a rifle.. Probably, but he did say, "I would let you shoot a crossbow at me from 150 yards, I would not do the same with a rifle". Personally I wouldn't want anybody shooting at me even if they were using a longbow ..... lol.
