Is this from a bear?

I have seen this before and many times it happens from now into June. It was explained to me as a marking post of a territory. It is probably scent marked as well. A competing bear coming into this area can stand and reach up to the tree and scale his size to the one that has laid claim to the area. If they can't reach the marks made then they know a bigger bear owns the area.  They are traveling more now and may be a good time to set up cameras since their mating season is around the beginning of June.

If it is 7' in the air it should be a decent sized bear. I have seen it twice on property I hunt and since I am tall I could just touch the marks and I can touch a 8' high ceiling.

Kinda tough to tell from that pic. If there are claw marks on the trunk, hair, or muddy bark where he has rubbed, I would say the culprit is obviously a bear.

Without any dead giveaway sign, it could be from a big ol' pileated woodpecker.
