long island hunter 5
just wondering what you guys think a .308 caliber rifle would do to a smaller red fox that I have been seeing. Is it worth it to shoot or will their be nothing left?
pistolp71
All depends on the bullet you are using and the distance. Some .308 bullets will turn him inside out and others just a small entrance and exit.
PREDATE
I use a .22mag for fox if that's any indication. If you have a shotgun, load it with a turkey wad or high brass #5 shot. A .308 would make a mess in my opinion. I've been hearing of .204 rugers doing too much damage
MACHINIST
I have shot fox with everything from a 22 all the way up to a 30-06.The 06 was the worst followed closely by the 308.If you use a slow expanding bullet then it may not be bad. Early
Question: Why shoot a fox?? Are you going to eat it?? Please remember that foxes are great "mousers"; The mice that they kill will destroy fruit trees...carry the dreaded deer tick...and God knows what else. So, do not be in a hurry to shoot a fox...with a .308, or anything else.

PREDATE
read up on this article about fox with mange(scabies) http://terriermandotcom.blogspot.com/2005/03/sarcoptic-mange.html like coyotes, fox will breed more to compensate for a decline in the population and without regulated population management mange will run rampant. MACHINIST
first off its legal for him to take a fox, will shooting one with his 308 give him a nice pelt/mount???More than likely no,but he paid for his license and he can do what he wants.Let him be.We all like to hunt and we all do things a touch different, just because a guy is doing something you wouldn't do then it doesn't make him wrong and you right. Also fox kill the hell out of turkeys while they are eggs, and also are big time killers of cats and small dogs.they do there damage and like all the animals we hunt their #'s need to be kept in check Edited December 3, 2013 by MACHINIST
Birddogg
Of course its legal for him to take a Fox, hope when he does that it is a beauty and the pelt is usable. No one is saying that he cannot do what he likes. This is a forum for opinions.
jjb4900
Fox are not big animals, they do not hold up very well to being shot with large caliber guns............if you really want one for whatever reason, go after it with something smaller........... a .22 is sufficient. MACHINIST
Early you think a fox doesn't kill small poults or even gets into the eggs when the hen is laying?I have seen many times in the city I live in foxes that have killed cats and if they can kill a cat I will guarantee small dogs aren't to far off either. PREDATE
Fox are predators. They do kill to eat, but so do many other animals. I hunt fox for the pelts and that's my prerogative.I don't take huge amounts. Many trappers take dozens every season and yet the population stays sufficient. Like I mentioned earlier, they will recover naturally. I don't think taking a few fox is gonna cause great turmoil in nature. Let the hawks have some mice too! Elmo
If I ever get a fox, it's going to get mount or at the very minimum, the pelt will be saved. Thus, if I come across a fox and the only thing in my hand is a 308, I would let it walk.

Early
Hmmm......Anyone know a screen printer who could produce a "I Am A Fox Killer" T-shirt? It would sell well on here. Actually, anything that has to do with killing would sell well on here. This "Hunting Forum" does much to advance the arguments of the anti-hunting crowd. You go, guys!!! What's wrong with hunting fox? Any schmuck can go out and shoot a deer. A fox is much tougher to hunt than a deer. pistolp71
pistolp71, you are an a........(fill in the blanks!) Not normally, but you bring out the best in people. Just sick of your ridiculous posts that you constantly make. Maybe he wants a nice mount, he shouldn't have to explain it to you. I wasn't going to, but now I think I'll go kill a fox tonight.
