Currently, no law exists protecting public assistance cash benefits from being either used to purchase alcohol, tobacco or lottery tickets, or withdrawn or used in any liquor store, casino or establishment providing adult-oriented entertainment.

Right, which means they can withdraw money from ATMs in those establishments. You really think that not letting them withdraw cash from ATMs in those places is gonna stop them from spending the cash however they want to? Please, you cant be that naive.

I know many people who grew up with their mothers getting public assistance, went to college off financial aid or military money, got great jobs, own their own homes, pay taxes like everyone else, send their kids to private schools, me being one of them.

And I can drive into any city across the US and see strings of generations of welfare recipients that have never known anything but a life of welfare income. Much of our welfare system results in a strangle hold on generation after generation that grow up dependent on the government for their existence and cannot seem to break the chain. For many it has become a way-of-life. It's a cruel system that enslaves the recipients with dependency and lowered expectations. Yes there are some who run onto hard times and need a hand up but there are a lot of others who are in that situation because they were born into it and previous generations were born into it. It is a system that needs cleaning, and very little can be said in defense of the way we conduct our assistance programs. Many of these have been modeled with an intent that it is to become a lifestyle for those claimed by it. The temporariness has been changed to assumptions that this is to be the way people will live and people have responded in exactly that fashion.

Vince1...That is great it worked for you...and it has for many...but there are many more out there that are well...I hate to say it are "smart" enough to know how to work it in an abusive way...

When I worked at a Kennel in Macedon at night and weekends...I had a day care at my home during the week....yes and payed taxes...to our accountants dismay...worked delivering penny savers on foot on the weekends while Mr B had a great construction job...So I could learn to groom show dogs ...This with 2 little ones.

There was a young 20 year old single girl that worked the Kennel as well....She decided to quit...went on unemployment and then got pregnant...One day about a year later she invites me to her place for lunch....and I arrive at a brand new ranch....that the Government was basically paying for built just for her!...she explained how she refused to put the father on the birth certificate and government assistant had all these programs...free school a new home...and a check to cover expenses...This was a young woman that was able to work ...had a guy that was able to pay child support...Though he could never get caught living there....a new house!! but between the county and state she was riding free...

.We bought our 100yr old "railroad" house at 13% interest at the time...which was actually a deal...and I was working my fanny off to get my education while driving from Avon to Macedon every single nite..Running day care during the day and some days having to take both my children and 3 from my business to another day care to be able to get to the kennel on time...Ya I was good enough the parents were OK with that arrangement to keep me.....There are a lot more abuse going one than one may think...and I won't even get into what a real estate broker tells me about what they see in the city...and on paper work ... They go in to write bank estimates..BPO's... I saw what is going on... she took me Just once...Mr B freaked.... Brand new houses...all city/county.state funds going to ...trashed and unsellable in a year to 3 yrs...

So ya being someone that grew up poor... wearing hand me downs....... having to shovel drives in the winter...... collecting bottles and selling carp I caught in the summer to get any thing "extra"...Always working 3x's harder to get the things or education I wanted...I have a problem with the Welfare system...Oh and yes I am by far smart enough to have used and abused it as were my mother...but that's not how we were raised...So I take a burn to my and my husbands tax dollars going toward someones cigarettes...booze...steaks..shrimp...fancy water...ect...ect..ect

You want to see welfare abuse? Just go to the walmart in Utica the first week of the month. I have seen more abuse there than anywhere. I was in line behind a lady dressed very well, had the long nails that looked like they just got done, gold jewelry , talking on a cell phone to someone about how she's just picking up a few things./ her cart was full of junk food steak and chicken. So she proceeds to tell her friend a bout how they are all going to the casino later. Well guess what she payed with at checkout? Made me sick when I saw the EBT card.

Or how bout another time in line a well dressed couple had another cart heaped full of stuff that looked like you could have a feast for Obama with. Time to pay, and guess what comes out? EBT !!!! You have to put a PIN number in I guess, and she forgot it so the card was locked. She goes In her purse and finds 4 hundred dollar bills to pay. If she has that kind of money laying around how the hell is she getting welfare? The abuse is more than what any one sees. Go into a lot of homes and see mattresses on the floor and garbage all over the house. But of course a huge flat screen tv with an xbox or ps3 under it. I see abuse in different forms on an almost daily basis.

So you think I am naive because I believe it is wrong. I never said we'd be able to prevent the money being spent improperly. You like to argue don't you?

Here is my rundown on your argumen:t I was pointing out how EBT card are used to buy improper items. Then you said no they can't be used. I said yes they can, then showed how the gov't is trying to stop it from happening and I am called naive. Right, got it.

Did I call you naive? Youre starting to sound like someone else on this site...

BTW, who is arguing, I thought we were having a discussion. Your run down is incorrect. The government is not trying to stop it, nor do they want to. They want people to depend on them. Your link said they want to stop them from using ATMs at those specific types of establishments.

Oh, and my "argument" was that you cant use food stamps to buy that stuff, and Im still right about that. Go back to where I referenced snap sites. You cannot use an EBT card to directly buy the items, unless the store is breaking the rules. You have to withdraw cash from an ATM and then use the cash to buy it. What dont you comprehend?

Does WPA ring a bell with anyone?  How much you wanna bet that if the people on the dole actually had to go and DO SOMETHING to get that check, they'd have a real job real quick.

Edit:  I'm *NOT* saying that everyone on welfare is a sponge, just a large percentage.

I never said you can buy that stuff with food stamps. You cannot withdrawl money from a food EBT stamp card for non grocery purchases, I never said you could. People are extracting taxpayer money VIA the EBT card (welfare) to make improper transactions. It happens everday. You are the one who hung your hat on the word DIRECTLY as in DIRECTLY using the EBT card to buy alcohol, tobacco. The end result is still the same. Customer walks in to Stewarts, asks for Marboro Reds and uses the HTM and EBT to purchase.

Someone told me they heard someone on welfare call the ebt card their snap card. They had never heard it called that before and asked why they call it a snap card. Girl says, BECAUSE, ON DA FIRST O DA MONF, I SNAP MY FINNER AND THE MONEY COMES OUT YO WALLET AND INTO MY ACCOUNT!!!! I am not for hitting woman for any reason, but someone who has the balls to say that should be punched in the face.

So we are saying the same thing lol

Just to play semantics though, you DID say they use their EBT cards to buy that stuff...

I can't believe that they can use EBT cards to buy beer and cigarettes. I threw up in my mouth when I saw a woman buying a pack of smokes on a "benefits" card. I really bit my tongue hard not to give her a lecture and say how she should be ashamed. I agree with Early though, there are some folks who have been dealt a crappy hand, and do need a leg up. There are so many people who don't have any pride and work the system. There should be some wayto prove you are putting in an effort to better yourself and your family while on these programs.

Yeah, I guess it is all in how you look at it. She waddled up to the counter and asked for Marboro's and then used the HTM and her EBT card to purchase. The funds came from the taxpayers in the end and within a minute of swiping the EBT card she was out the door huffing on a cigarette with an infant in the back seat (which she left unattended in the car while in the store).... BTW are you a lawyer?

lol.... Either way I just hate to see how it easily it can happen, and there isn't a way to stop it. A third of peoples paycheck is taken immediatly for taxes, not to mention being taxed on every purchase that is made, it is no wonder why people need public assistance to survive. The whole thing is a giant snowball. The more they tax the more people need assistance. The more they give out assistance the more they need to tax. The jump in fuel prices really added to the fire.
