turkeyfeathers
Just planted 2 blueberry bushes this year. One is yielding a few berries a day. The other, nothing. Did stumble into some black raspberry bushes in town while walking the dog. Nobody else saw these, smh. Right along a creek and path. Went back with jeans the next morning and picked a pint in about 15 minutes, Going back in a day or so. Found if I get under the canopy where the birds can't see them....lots of berries. Think I eat about as many as I took home for the parents and wife and daughter to throw on cereal. Now I gotta check my secret blackberry hidey hole. dbHunterNY
1/4 cup lemon juice, 1/4 cup heavy cream, half can (7oz) of sweetened condensed milk. Mix that well in a large bowl. Then fold in a whole container (8oz) of coolwhip and about a cup or more if your harvested berries. Then put that in a Keebler shortbread ready pie crust and then into the fridge to chill. Freeze one while you work on eating the other. Lol that recipe comes from an old school country kitchen. Minus the crust they'd make that from scratch. Two Track
I have only a couple handfuls of black raspberries worth in my yard. Hope production picks up next year. Part of the problem is deer are eating the raspberry plants and the tops off my radishes. Need to get a fence up. The deer ignore my dog, my brother-in-laws' German Shepard, and my neighbor's lab. The old blueberry bush that was already there when bought the place has very few berries and they are all green. Had more berries on it last year. Not much hope there this year. Cut out some old growth that was over an inch thick and 7 foot high. May be time to give it the axe and just get it out of there. Its too close to the house any way. My parents, who live a couple states south of here, are done for raspberries and blueberries, and are full swing in Blackberries. If could have stayed another day, would had some blackberry cobbler for desert. Got the fresh strawberry and raspberry jam from the recent trip to parents. Later will get some blackberry jam and mush. Brought a quart of fresh blackberry mush home. Try it warm over vanilla ice cream - its good. Found blueberry/huckleberry bushes while turkey hunting and then got stuck in the wild blackberries using an old trail that got overgrown with them. Would have been easier to back track instead. Had to cut my way out from there. Will have to pay them a visit later for some fruit.
Doc
Yeah, this is about the time of year when we used to be busy as heck picking black berries for ten cents a quart when I was a kid. I remember the hours out in the hot sun, and the occasional grass snake that would be laying up in the bushes .... lol. Actually even at 10 cents a quart, I used to make quite a bit of money. It bought me some of the cool clothes that I wanted and added traps to my collection and paid for my subscription to Fur-fish-&Game. And I always seemed to have that dark blue stain around my mouth. between the berries, grapes and bagging wheat on the combine and other farm chores, I always seemed to have enough money. landtracdeerhunter
Blueberries, along with strawberries are among my top eating fruit. I planted a few bushes in the only loamy, acid soil I had up on the knoll. Fenced the area with some double 4 foot fence too. The deer jumped the fence and decided I didn'.t need those blueberries. I then added tin pie plates thinking the banging and reflexion would deter their actions. Nope, didn't work. I now enjoy the pickings from a local grower, LOL. They won't touch the raspberries or the blackberries there, just the blues. MY $21 a bush Kiwi are gone also.
