Have any of you guys gone to www.carbontv.com ? They have a few pretty good shows that seem fairly realistic. They have one called On Your Own where this guy only hunts public lands all over the country. Some episodes he gets nothing and some he does but he shows his failures as well as success.

I got really turned off by hunting shows several years ago with scripting, baiting and hunting on fenced deer farms and the advertising and all the BS that went along with it. But there really isn't much on TV anymore other than reality TV and politics news babble and Drug commercials which tell you side effects could cause DEATH ???and so on, even heard one yesterday that said side effects could include men growing BREASTS!!! Holy SH!t?

So I might actually go back to the outdoor network and start watching hunting shows once again...

Well then, u should check out midwestwhitetail.com , semi-live weekly hunting , and even have some guys in NY, They spend little if no time at all plugging products n if they do they show it in a more practical/educational sense instead of shoving it down ur throat like most .... Bowhunting.com is ok at best , same semi-live weekly webisodes but not to the caliber of MMW ...

I havn't watched a hunting show in at least a year and that was the 1st in a long time . Too many commercials selling deer bait , etc ..

You watched the kill and the guy has to explain what you just saw . Why ? I saw it !  And ..... of course the hunter continues to whisper after the deer is down . It's a rarity to see a guy shoot a doe on one of these shows .

The hunter is tracking the deer he shot and all of a sudden he screams "there he is" but the camera man is on the other side of the deer taping as the hunter makes the find . Give me a break !

I agree with u on that end , but none the less they film high quality hunts...

I believe a show last year he was talking about how he doesn't even hunt at all until the end of October. You can do that when you are in prime hunting real estate and your farm is on super lockdown, and you have ample time to get in a tree stand for the next two to two and a half months.

 

There are so many things he does on his Iowa farm that just are not realistic most anywhere else in the country. I congratulate him on being able to do that as he's a hard worker and deserves what he has sown. Unfortunately, I believe his advice is slowly losing its relatability as he knows nothing else.

 

What I really do like is his philosphy on stand selection. He worries about entry and exit alot and won't hunt a spot where he can't get in and out safely. Good stuff, but again, the knock on it is that perfect entry isn't always attainable in the real world (small acreage, hunter density, property lines). It's much different on a massive low pressure farm and surrounding area. I'd like to see him do more about real world hunting, ie what do you do when your entry/exit isn't right - what conditions would make him go for it? What would be the deal breaker to not go in at all? So on and so forth.

"Fresh Tracks with Randy Newberg" is very similar.

i enjoy the few shows that talk about prep, scouting, tactics and lessons learned. Huting public land, hunting high pressure etc.

 

Too many shows are just the hunt and you have no idea the conditions. You just see the guy touting the outfitter/ranch and shooting a trophy buck. Gets boring and in no way HELPS ME. If anything it hurts the new hunter's expectation when they expect the same results and go out and get blanked or just see a door or yearling.

 

We should list the shows that are helpful here. I like D&DH but they have been spending a lot of time on food plots lately. I will admit that i watch buck commander for the entertainment, not for the hunting.

If you wouldn't shoot it on the first day then don't shoot it on the last. They don't care about the animal most of them are in it for the money.

i always wondered about the guys who hunt in numerous states. You harvest like 5 or 6 old nasty mature bucks. The meat isn't any good, and you're running out of room in your barn for the heads. When it becomes a business it's sad.

The whitetail shows generally suck and are one big commercial.  All the shows that are well done seem to be western based, which makes for better TV than sitting in treestands.  The ones I make a point to DVR and watch are MeatEater, Fresh Tracks with Randy Newberg (previously On Your Own Adventures), Western Hunter, and Solo Hunters (Remi Warren is a bad ass).  I hear Shockey's new show is pretty good but I have't seen it yet.

 

I would say I look forward to MeatEater as much as any show on TV, hunting or non-hunting.

Yup, we are on the same page on all fronts! Def spoiled , and strategies have good principle behind them especially entry n exit but does that apply to me hunting public land or even smaller private tracks , not in the least , I gotta be creative !!! And yes most of his strategy/advice does not apply to the average joe, for pure viewing pleasure ( I hunt how I hunt regardless) I'd rather watch him n keep track of his n other pro staff progress over the season ... Solid show with low product shoved in your face , and no machismo of some of the competitors ...
