growalot
Why as a matter of fact I do...and it is not easy...When the dog bit off part of my left pinky the surgeon ,being a bow hunter wrapped my hand so I could still hold my bow..3 rd day I shot a big 8pts.Everyone was at work..temps in 60's DIL in Avon..but on way.Being left handed ...holding knife was difficult .I brought store plastic bags with me and wrapped bandaged hand in those...made sure I had my gut hook knife..dragged him to best incline..head high, strattled him and wrapped hind legs around mine to keep steady on his back...his rack helped do that as well. Sliced an opening well into breast plate area to avoid gut puncture ...used gut hook and zipped him open.rolled him onside and kneeled down pulled guts away, best I could and with right gloved hand reached in to cut connective tissue..ect...ect Just make sure you take pain meds before you start..and keep bad hand wrapped..I duct taped bags at wrist...I used tractor bucket to get him home..unfortunately..exhausted..dropped buck on rack...braking one side...got home as DIL pulled in..he did the rest. Doc
Use rubber gloves and there probably won't be any problems as long as you don't go banging it around on stuff. The main thing is to keep crud away from it.

Grow, is there any part of you that hasn't been maimed over the years? I'm not trying to be a wiseass here, I am just amazed at all the injuries you've told us about. You're sort of like the bionic woman. Most all parts seem to have been either fixed or replaced. I myself haven't needed any real medical attention since I needed a couple stitches on a finger after I sliced it with a broadhead of all things. That was in 1993 I believe. growalot
I was born April 1st...and figure Gods been testing my sense of humor ever since...It started from the time I was little...lots of hospital runs...out of the blue...lol literally...I would just stop breathing...had a bleeding ulcer at the age of 9 and in the hospital a week..all shots and still got the measles and mumps......No I have broken, sprained, dislocated, lost bits and pieces of toes and fingers...one reason I have never worn my wedding ring..in fact surgeon said I would have lost a couple of fingers had I been wearing it when bitten...punctured, sliced, and burned most of me at one time or another...When welding guys are Oh so careful about hot slag getting down their boots...well try that stuck in your bra...ya my welding days were fun...hhmmm.......Lord that all sounds so bad when written..lol...but I'm active...very well rounded, and just dang accident prone...it's life.... Ya move on till the next one.... lol....I have to say though...I am great in a crisis

Culvercreek hunt club
high heavy duty rubber gloves like sold in the cleaning or paint stripping section of hardware store. they come up mid forearm. buy one pair. turn you right one inside out and put both on the left hand. (or the other way depending on the hand. I did this for a sliced palm one year and works great.

Culvercreek hunt club
Or just hunt with you period. You get so frustrated with how slow other guys go, you just tell them to move out of the way hahahahaha Well move forward or just get out of the way...lol. It isn't like we are doing surgery to repair the wounds, we are just gutting them. Honestly the biggest issue I see with hunters gutting deer is their knives are too damned big. So yes. size does matt and unlike many other aspects in life, smaller is better. Edited October 20, 2014 by Culvercreek hunt club
WNYBuckHunter
Oh here we go with my knife is too big again hahaha I cant find a guthook thats much smaller than that one. WNYBuckHunter
Not for me. They work great and I don't ever pop anything open. I'm not exactly the most tidy or precise when I'm gutting a deer, remember? Lol
Doc
I have a big old Kabar style knife. It's heavy and clunky, but one knife does all. If I want to gut a deer, there's nothing delicate about that operation, and if you want to whack down a sapling, it's kind of nice that I don't have one of those wimpy little skinning knives. And if I have to wrassle a big old bear to the ground and stab it to death ........ Well, let's not get carried away.

thphm
True story, We were in the local bar with a dining room off to the side after hunting one night for dinner and a few fellows walk in wearing the leather belts that hold around 20 rounds of ammo and boie knives hanging on the side of them. This old fellow was at the end of the bar and asked if they just came from a war, one of them said why, the old fellow said you are dressed for it and asked what the heck are you going to do with them big knives, one of them said , there for gutting deer when we got some. The old fellow reaches in his pocket and pulls out a folding knife with a 2"long blade and said , fellows I have gutted more deer and other animals with this knife then you will most likley ever shoot in your life time..
