grampy
The best way to scientifically observe them would be to get forty or so yards away and about fifteen to twenty feet high. Let me know if another "scientist" will be needed for collaboration. I'll be on call for the next week or so.

DeerDuck
Many years ago, there was a buck out near North Sea that was hitting a telephone pole. Of course you couldn't hunt the area, but I'm sure that someone got him. Never saw him or anymore rubs that size again.
Short Track Hunter
Typically I see 2" diameter trees get rubbed.
HectorBuckBuster
I notice that is a cedar tree. Several years ago, I had a stand that was on the edge of a field, in the field was one very large cedar tree I am talking 20 inches across, I watched a little 4 point just go to town on that tree rubbing it. It was not shredded like that though.
MACHINIST
Its probably a signpost rub,you know where all the bucks take a turn.Generally I dont think they are started by a small deer, but are always visited by all deer

MACHINIST
Not if they are washed with my hunting clothes and kept in a storage container.I keep a set of "work" clothes to set stands in so I am not messing up my hunting clothes with scent, rips or just getting them dirty.
