Merlot
Probably will not happen. My guess is the neighbors will not go for it. Maybe 4 or 5 bowhunters at a time, given the size of the park?
Lawdwaz
I got a chuckle out of the comments in the link. I travel Rt 20 quite often (from Rt 77 all the way to Rt 15) and the section of Rt 20 from Darien to Texaco Town seems to have a very high population of deer, both dead & alive. Road kills abound and I travel it with caution........ The Park must be loaded for them to contemplate this, good for them at least looking into it. Hopefully it proceeds............
The_Real_TCIII
I'm skeptical about the focus being on youth hunters. I'll probably get flamed for saying that but if the focus is on quick clean kills because there are hikers, horse back riders, etc in the park do you want kids in the woods with bows for the first time? Nothing will end the program faster than wounded deer running around. Please don't think I'm against young bow hunters and I know a kid can be proficient with a bow but this type of program will be VERY scrutinized by the public

The thing is, if they don't let citizens do it they will be bringing in the sharpshooters from the county SWAT teams and they don't come cheap.........ask the Amherst Police Dept what their program costs per year for the taxpayers. Money that could be spent elsewhere...........Letting he local folks do it is a win/win (I hate that term) situation.
growalot
Merlot...I see what your saying...I sigh..because I don't like being the neigh sayer..but knowing mind sets...why would they put the fist arrow in this through their foot!I say this because veterans great..but youth hunts from the get go?...Really?... it's like a buzz word for opponents to hunters and those "wounding bow hunters" to boot...Why not just see how it goes FIRST before bringing in youth hunts? hunter49
Probably will not happen. My guess is the neighbors will not go for it. Maybe 4 or 5 bowhunters at a time, given the size of the park? I have a bike/walking trail in my back yard & during hunting(gun) season the town closes it down to the public. They put up gates at all the road crossings along with signs stating why it is closed & the properties around it can be hunted. Given the size of this park I would think something like this could be done.

Given the size of this park I would think something like this could be done. Finger Lakes Trail system? I have a good stretch of that trail to hike here. Those "closed" signs unfortunately don't always work the way they're supposed to during hunting season. Most of that system around here passes through privately owned properties where permission is a narrow sliver of trail to the public with established entry points at road crossings and parking areas. I don't think that would work effectively in a park environment where accessing a trail could be accomplished from any random point over the one mile area within the park. phade
Let's not knock them down about the youth component yet. Makes sense, but I agree, they're probably trying to sell to the masses. Good for them actually trying to use a resource. I suspect they could do a paid lottery and have alot of submissions. I know I would submit...that first year of hunting would be great. I'm sure there are plenty of bucks aged through the classes there. I am sure there are also landowners/hunters bordering that are cringing at the thought of this. I'm thinking that in the end neighbors won't have much if any say in it. Maybe they would be happier with police sharpshooters involved?? Send the neighbors the invoice............ Lawdwaz
I remember that, mostly because they shot a house! One mistake with thousands of deer killed. You never even know they are there...........they are extremely efficient and good at their craft.
growalot
Phade that was not a knock down to youth hunters...it was a statement in realities on views...as I said check out how it all goes over the first year then bring them in...why poke a pin in the nerves of one..... ppl that don't care for bow hunters and the wounding( just read this forum during bow season...We as hunters have a rough time with it and lets admits this...it comes off being rampant)...two...... inexperienced hunters...It makes no sense what so ever in the big view of it. You are overestimating the general public understanding of bowhunting. They don't care - bowhunting will either be "safe" or "unsafe" to them based on the idea, not the reality, and nothing will change that in getting the hunt actually started. Likewise, nothing gets crap done faster than saying "it's for the kids." Or "it's for the disabled vets." This is a well-thought out effort to get the deer shot as needed due to over-population. Whoever is leading this effort should be running for a better office, their talents are being wasted in a small-scale situation. My town doesn't have a stoplight, nor a sewer system. It has a $2 million dollar athletic field at the high school. How do you think that got funded and green-lighted? "It's for the kids." That's how. growalot
I say you maybe over estimating...for there is no comparison on how one views a kid passing a foot ball and kicking a soccer ball to one holding a weapon and shooting an animal...I don't think they lack visualization skill sets...JMO

growalot
PS...watch what you maybe wishing for...our town got a sewer system and it is a finacial and DEC cluster....Which not being in town ...I'm sure we are subsidizing in the last round of appraisals

It's Bethany. Ever been there? We're talking about a geographical area where archery is part of the PE classes. The kids push will only make this more likely it'll take place. Very smart move. The_Real_TCIII
One mistake with thousands of deer killed. You never even know they are there...........they are extremely efficient and good at their craft. Instead of paying police to shoot them, they could generate revenue by letting bowhunters do it for a fee. But Amherst is a different can of worms It is done in many more places than Amherst now. Cheektowaga, North Tonawanda, West Seneca??

jjb4900
There's dozens of County Parks open for hunting in Suffolk County....never been an issue, and very few if any are secluded.
