Antler Pens

Just something different in an effort to keep the board active with somewhat hunting related topics;

Decided to cut up some old Whitetail antlers from various years sitting around for pen parts. I buy the actual metal parts as a kit, these are twist style and take a standard ink refill.

A few disasters here and there for some losses, can be a difficult media to work with. They stink something aweful when sanding, they get a coat of super glue and then resanded for finish, everyone is unique.

I sometimes make these for clients out of wood from chunks we remove during renovations; doing some Chestnut from trees that started growing in the mid 1700's next.....house was framed in 1817 best we can tell.

Those are pretty freakin' SWEET!

Definitely not disposables, but more worthy of stealing over a blue and white Bic,lol

Do you spin those on a miniature lathe or something, or are they all sanded to form by hand from tines?

One more thing.... how do you spread a "Super Glue" finish without the applicator sticking to the piece?

You don't have to reveal all  your secrets to me. I just wanted to show my genuine interest in a cool azz work of art!

Outstanding job on these!

No secrets.

I use a Jet mini lathe and turn similar to wood. I apply glue when piece is turning.

I've gone thinner, but moisture change during the winter has them crack. Glue helps fill pores and keep them mostly intact and stable.

Pen kit;

Thanks all for comments, different way to remember a hunt or a specific animal.

Saw some pens similar to these for sale last weekend in Penn Yan. I think it was around $55-$65 per pen...you should be selling them if you're not already!

Just give them away every now and then.

I don't have a supply of raw material for Whitetail to make enough to bother.
