Buckwheat

Recommended Posts

I planted an acre this morning.....75 pounds of seed,  150 pounds of 15-15-15...Broadcast the seed and fertilizer with my buddy's ATV broadcaster and then did a light discing to work it in..

I am currently praying for rain for prompt germination...

IF we get some rain soon, and IF  we get  a "reasonable" amount of rain, and IF we don't get an early frost, I may have mature grain by the end of September.

Other wise, I still hope to have enough high nutrition  greens to benefit the deer, plus  improving the soil in that plot for whatever I decide to plant there next year.

That would be Spanky of course. :clapping:

Sorry to post a not related thread.

The new place we have a few corn fields about three miles down the road. They were looking pretty shabby looking until we had a good rain this past week. Not they are sprouting and baby corns on the stalks. The dry weather is not helping plots or farmers.

Buckwheat is a good organic matter builder in the soil but it needs to be plowed under while it's still green.  Deer will eat it but it's not a preferred deer choice.  Turkeys will eat the seed heads.  I would plant winter rye or winter wheat this time of year so deer will have something to eat in the fall even after the first frost...than plow it under in the spring, which will also build organic matter in the soil.  just my opinion.

Every now and then even a blind hog finds an acorn..

After seeding and fertilizing my buckwheat Saturday, this rain that we got overnight should initiate germination..

That stuff should be popping out of the ground within a few days.

Thanks, Rob....

As I remember it, I spent a lot of time that summer sitting in the sun on the stoop out in front of the pool hall, watching the '55 and '56 Chevys and Fords go by and smoking Lucky Strikes...

LMFAO! OK Pygmy, laughing at that gave be a belly ache. LOL

Back to the REAL buckwheat..I checked the plot this morning and after being in the ground just since Saturday,  the first seedings are popping up.

However, after getting 3.5 inches of rain today, some of it may have washed away...

I checked the plot this morning..Nine days after planting, the seedlings are up about 2-4"..   Germination was good all over the plot, which is  15 yards wide and 330 yards long..   Looking GOOD !.....<<SMILE>>....
