Compound bow cable damaged

Hi, I tried to post this in the archery section, but didn't find one. If I missed it, feel free to move it there.

So with a lot going on this year, I wasn't thinking I would be hunting bow season this year, but the urge is strong and I couldn't resist the chance when things lined up for me today. But due to the lack of shooting, tuning, sighting, and exercise, I was going to limit myself to under 20 yards. That was until I was busted numerous times today by deer just out of range, 25, 30, 35 yards.

I decided to tune my bow in the field and risk spooking some deer during the middle of the day. I adjusted the poundage, tuned, and sighted it in at 20, 30, 40, and 50. Unfortunately, while tuning and sighting the 50, I nicked the cable with my broad head(really upset I did that). See above puncture. I took the risk and drew the bow anyway, and all seems well, for now. Finished tuning and hunted until dark, only to get busted yet again by a mature doe.

Not sure if I'll be able to bow hunt before gun season, but if I do, I'll probably use this bow until it either pops, or until season is over and I replace the cable/bow.

I'm going to venture and guess that this is not worth repairing, and it's a replace item. Also, the bow is probably a 7-9 year old bow, wondering what your opinion would be as to how to go about this situation. New cable, new bow, or something else.

Thanks

String is compromised. If you think it will fail, replace before it pops. Else damage to you or how can happen.

Although it is definitely weaker, how much weaker is it? What percentage of strands are left? I don't know how much leeway strings have but I bet they are way, way stronger than they need to be. At the least keep a close eye on it as it may start to unwind.

Don't get a new bow because of a new string need :)

You maybe playing with fire....even though it is a good pic just to hard to tell how "deep" the nic is.
If that puppy let's go at full draw you could end up in a world of hurt.

I would say it's about 1/3 cut.

Yeh, after the incident, I drew it back far from my face and held it there for a bit

I'd definitely get it replaced, probably cost you about $100 for new strings and cables to be installed.

I'll probably install it myself, strings on eBay are showing $60-$75. I just don't know if it's worth it being that a new bow is probably $200-$300 of the same class.

Don't draw that bow anymore!  Not worth the risk!  If the string lets go it can hit your neck and take you out, get it replaced!

Damn it Jeff, not what I wanted to hear lol. Was hoping to put it off until I decide with string or bow.

One of our members at Suffolk archers had a broken arrow that hit him in the wrist.  It was damaged from hitting the ground, check your arrows!  Compound bows have too much presser on them to play around with.  Just not worth risking your life!

I would give you my Mathews but I did the same exact thing to that string!   lol

Comforting to know that I'm not the only one who's done that.

I wouldn't want that thing in my house! get it pressed and get those cables off, if it lets go your limbs and cams could be damaged

According to market value, it's just a tad over the price of a set of nice strings.

I'm not overly worried about damaging the cam(single) or the limbs.

BTW, I wouldn't want it in my home either, that's why it's in the car

I wouldn't draw it back! I have witnessed strings breaking and it's not fun at all! I wouldn't be afraid to have it in my house as I have never heard of one breaking when it wasn't being drawn but probably not a bad idea either.

I have a to say that you are the first person I have ever heard of that tuned a bow in the woods during season. I would love to know how you managed that.

Regardless of what it is worth used, though, you can go to 60xstrings and get yourself one for $80 probably (also they have promo codes so look around to get a bit off), or you can go to the store and pay $300-350 for an entry level bow. A new entry level is probably better, but it's still 3X the cost or more! If you are willing to do it yourself it's a no brainer.

Wow. Can't believe you would draw it back after that.... Do you fire your guns in the house to see if they are unloaded ??? I'm not trying to insult you but jeez ! Forget about breaking the bow or cams or any of that !! U could lose an eye and never hunt again ! Get that thing fixed asap !

You should defnitely get new cables. The shop I usually go to put on new cables for me and put one on backwards (new guy) and it cut itself worse than that and I didn't feel comfortable shooting it. They replaced it free of charge and put my old cables back on to get me by a week during bow season. I would not shoot it like that who knows what other strings are damaged under those layers. Depends on how bad you want it and if you can do it yourself. A new set of cables and a string will be a lot cheaper than a new bow. My bow is 9 years old this season and wouldn't trade it for any other bow, it draws so smooth and is plenty fast enough for me.

Looking at the picture a 2nd time my cable was just as bad maybe a little less cut, you have a big set for drawing that back. I didn't even want to take mine out of the case afraid it was going to let go at any time.

This is like beating a dead horse you have heard it so many times now but I agree with everyone else. You shouldn't be using that bow. Is less than $100 worth your site or at the very least getting whipped by your stiring while you are 15+ feet in the air? Your choices are, new bow or new cables....Not should I hunt with this or not...

If you never seen a cable let loose and the accompanying damage to the limbs, you don't want to. It is just a matter of time before it lets go and. I have seen two failures in leagues and it wasn't pretty. Both guys were very luck that they didn't have more permanent damage to themselves. Both bows were toast.

I've seen guys at the range hitting all kinds of crap with their arrows and I'm pretty sure they don't check them. If I hit anything but foam with mine I am checking each arrow carefully with a full bending and rolling along its length. A few weeks ago I slid an arrow right in next to another and the one that was hit looked extremely good until I checked it and realized it had formed a hairline split along a few inches. Hard to see at first. Into the trash it went.
