She was so cold and I didn't have a ton of time so I skinned and quartered her and went back up today Monday to debone and cut the rest. As I was skinning I realized I had not gotten a pass through on my first shot. Embedded on the opposite side up against the hide I found this little gem. It's a TC 240 grain XTP bullet/sabot. I'm impressed with the mushrooming but not impressed that it didn't go all the way through. Will experiment this off season with some others. Same round we shoot. Broad side shots are always pass through. If sharp quartering to shot and bullet goes length of body we get 50 50 on pass through. The ones that don't always get found looking like yours. Deer usually go fight down if they don't they never get out of sight. These things cause a lot of damage. We use 100 grain 777 50 50 behind them. Have tried others but none as good as these. Especially the shockwaves. Those things are junk.

chas0218
My problem is the deer get too close, any .243 95gr. bullet going 3300 fps will fragment on me. I haven't found a bullet that will stay together. I have a few a few .270 bullets that have stayed together better, Hornady don't stay together for me but the Nosler ballistic tip seem to do better. Top is the one .270 130gr. nosler ballistic tip 150 yard shot, I didn't weigh it prior but if it was 130gr. I lost 5gr. I think mostly jacket. Bottom is the same bullet shot at 43 yards into the scapula spine of the shoulder it weighed 68gr. almost all the interior was gone.

It fragments if youre too close? I shoot a .270 and rarely more than 50 yards, is there a particular bullet for close range shooting? Culvercreek hunt club
I've never been able to recover one of my Sierra game kings that I load up. They have always gone through (including when shoulder shot). I wouldn't keep shooting a bullet if I kept finding it in the animal. I understand the whole expending all it's energy in the animal point but I like two wholes leaking. I know there are a few on here that load the Barnes X bullets. Lawd and Pygmy I believe have had great luck in the 243 with them.

BowmanMike
i had a bullet stay in a doe the first time this year when i shot with my muzzleloader. She was quartering away and maybe 60 yds off. So the bullet had to travel through a lot of stuff. I hit her on the last rib,the liver was shredded and the bullet also destroyed the front shoulder. Very nice expansion on the bullet. It worked as advertised. 250 grain shockwave with 2 pellets of white hots.

I've never recovered a bullet either. 30-30, 30-06, and 300win mag is what I've used for deer. for a while I've only shot deer with a 30-06 and Federal Fusion ammo that's a bonded spitzer boat tail I think. I don't even think I've gotten a single hole with my muzzleloader.

I reload for all of my guns but my reloads for the .270 and .243 are a little hotter than factory ammo giving me more fps and flatter trajectory. The term fragment refers to when a bullet starts to break apart into smaller pieces. Those smaller pieces are called fragments. Usually a lighter bullet going faster will fragment/break apart easier when it hits a hard object soft tissue has no effect other than the mushroom effect. I have had some factory ammo do the same thing but less of it. More of the ballistic tip ammo seems to fragment than the soft nose nosler partitions or my sierra gameking bullets. I have tried a couple different brands one being the Barnes the other I can't remember. It has been awhile since I reloaded them for the .270 maybe I should give them another try. This was about 8 years ago or more.

Billdogge
Barnes. Muzzleloader. Shot using 2 White-hots at about 70 yards hard quartering to me. I didn't weigh it but I think no loss except tip. Love the Barnes!
