deerpassion
Congrats on the bird. Walk us thru the hunt ? Youth season can't get here soon enough. Ahhh, turkey woods , my favorite place. Thank you sir... it goes like this .... this birds hammerin behind me 75yds in a cypress head opening morning this past Saturday ... little sweet talkin and here comes a hen soft yelpin... f@:;.... started going n back in forth with her to draw her in, but to late as he. Crosses my trail at 60 n strolls off with his girlfriend... went back that evening n rooster him about 200 yds from where he gave me the finger... Next morning , I bring my buddy who I got into duck hunting years back ... he's been trying to kill a bird ever since I moved up to buffalo in 2012... so I say hay we're killin this bird lets go... Super windy morning but he's hammerin again at everything I throw at em ... hits the ground and is slowly circling back towards the area we met the day before... we sneak over and set up... 10 minutes later here he comes all poofed up for his girlfriend again, but 100 yds on the other side of the slough... he still hammerin but it's so windy we can't hear him but we can see it... they work off to the left behind some cypress trees and I say... move it move it! We sneak along the edge up to the patch of cypress and I see his head through the moss that's hanging down n let one rip... he rolls and takes flight... my buddy n I raise up and BOOM at the same time as he helicoptered to the ground like a sky blasted duck !!! Sick hunt , gotta love these ol swamp chickens Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
John Barton
Very cool. Having never hunted before turkey hunting intimidates me with the whole gotta be all camo and sometimes calling other hunters to you. Maybe once I get my feet wet. Congrats againSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
grampy
John, finding someone who has some experience, and going with them a few times will shorten the learning curve quite a bit. The spring turkey woods, are one of the best times of the year to be out there. After getting out, more often than not, you will develop a lifelong affliction to chasing turkey's in the spring. Give it a go this year if possible!
ATbuckhunter
Congrats on the bird! Is that an oceola or a eastern turkey? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
turkeyfeathers
John , x2 on what grampy said. Although you'll learn something each and every time you're out , going with someone who has experience will help a lot. There simply is not a better place to be than the spring turkey woods. Listening to the woods wake up is amazing. That first gobble on roost gives me goosebumps. My heart racing when I hear him and know he's getting close but can't see him. Trying to find him without moving your head and it feels like your eyes are panning so far to the side you're looking out your ears. Gun is up now for 15 minutes and you start to shake. Watching " the show " of him turning his tail , gobbling , beating old Tom in a chess match , sucking in a few minutes over your dead bird knowing you've just outsmarted him at a game he has the advantage in. I've never killed a wall hanger deer or anything remotely close and have killed a lot of deer But any turkey you get to throw over your shoulder is a true trophy in itself Give it a whirl , you'll quickly be hooked Deerpassion , way to get it done ! Sounds like a great hunt. And to share it with a newer turkey hunter even better.
