At the range today.

I work with a guy that shoots at least once a week usually more, he misses/wounds a few deer everything year. 100% of his range time is spent at the bench with a lead sled.

  Games for shooting.  Bottle caps, make a smiley face in the target (Bench), jumping any foam or plastic container off the burm.  (Anything high on the burm if off limits!)  One shot is fine but jumping the target is the goal with multiple shots in the shortest time.  Shooting the pins that hold the target onto the backstop.  Pick any target off the burm and take it out.  Print out a dart board and play the game.  (Fun 22 game.)  (Smaller the target the harder it is!)  How many shots can you put in the bull 10 rounds bench, 10 off hand.  Smaller bull for bench about 2-3 inch standing 50 yards.  Deer target, one between the eyes and then take out both eyes, you loose if you miss any of the 3 shots.  Cards, take out the number on the card or pick a symbol to take out, place the card side ways and shoot it in half.  Long distance put clays on the backstop and take them out off hand.

All good fun and keeps it much more interesting than just shooting paper.  Be safe and make sure of your backstop!

We used to cut string and light Ohio blue tip matches with pellet pistols when I was a kid.

The battleship ( as in "you sank my battleship" ) shoot n see look fun.

Now I know some people mean well, and some people are just decks! Sounds like your encounter, was with one of the latter. I've never considered myself a great shot, but get the job done in the field. And there is no doubt that many on this forum could outshoot me. While in the army, I was fortunate to share range time, and friendship with some sniper types just back from Nam. Now those guys could shoot! Highly trained, down to earth, and business like to the extream. A couple even went on to join the national team. But their quiet and sometimes humorous advise has stayed with me all these years. Just the basics, like breath control, solid "bone to bone" shooting positions, grip and trigger control made me a much more consistent shooter. I learned the basics well. So having seen the best, I can spot a "poser" from 100 yards away, and just humor them or ignore them completely, when they try to give me "advice".

Here is my last range outing with a new to me 270 before my shoulder surgery. Five shot group at 100 yards.

Why not just use the adhesive backing you paid for with this target?

What's funny as I have 100% of the time forgotten to use the adhesive backing on these and shoot n see turkey targets

Just habit, I guess. lol..... By the time I fumble around separating the backing, I  could staple 4 targets. Long before they started making these shoot and see targets, we would staple standard sheets of paper with hand drawn bulls.

Ha-ha-ha..... It's not just on rifle ranges that self-professed "experts" get over-eager to jam their unsolicited, so-called expertise on you. I have seen that at archery club and league shoots where some guys feel it is their God-given duty to lay all kinds of criticism on you about your equipment, form, and style of shooting. It is just part of human nature that overcomes some people that simply has to be relied to with a smile and a nod of the head and then complete dismissal. I think if you want an environment that is free of that sort of thing, you have to invest in your own private shooting range. And even then there is a possibility that a relative or friend may try to lay unwelcomed expertise on you ..... lol. But at least on your own range, you only have to listen to it once if it really bugs you too much and you can eliminate the problem quickly.

What many don't realize or at least won't admit to is shooting is like anything else, some are very good at it without much practice at all most/like myself have to practice our a$$'s of to be "good" at it.

Shooting is a perishable skill. Shooting a few rounds the week before season isn't enough for most although for most that's all the shooting most hunters do. I probably average 30-40rounds a week other than during season and am still a sub par shooter. When I was an instructor/Range Safety Officer at Paris Island teaching Marine Corps Recruits how to shoot it was always mind blowing how some kids that have never shot before were equal to me in ability after a couple hundred rounds in a weeks time and during that same amount of time kids whom had shot their whole lives still sucked.

Several years ago I sighted in a young friend's shotgun at our range . I used Federal rifle slugs in a rifled barrel which I had always done in my 12 gauge . My friend's 12 gauge had a smooth bore  barrel . I took the youngster to the range ( Ontario Gun Club ) . He was scattering rounds all over the target at 50 yards . A guy was standing behind up watching and asked what brand ammo he was shooting and I said Federal .The guy said some shotguns don't like certain ammo and he should try Remington . I asked Jeff to swap places and let me take a shot . I then asked Jeff where I had hit . He said , almost center bullseye . The guy left .

From watching my friend shoot , I surmised that he was FLINCHING and that it wasn't an "ammo problem" . I suggested that he buy a couple Snap Caps and practice aiming and squeezing the trigger . Took him hunting a few times . He has killed several deer over the years .
