Talk about Mad!!!

As I was getting ready for work today I went down in the basement to bring up some water and what do I discover? The door on my venison freezer is cracked Open! Are you kidding Me!!! There's a puddle of blood in the bottom of freezer and about 40 of the 50 packs of various venison are completely thawed out. I immediately start calling up the kids and talking to the wife but no one says they been anywhere near it. Those doors just normally don't swing open.well needless to say I'm eating venison for lunch today, and my kids and friends and neighbors are all having venison for dinner. I saved what I could and gave the rest away to anyone that would be able to use it right away. This definitely puts me in the hole for the upcoming season. I'm not going to be picky this year.

That sucks.  Freezer alarm and pronto   Main unit sits in our living room so we can hear it.  Basement flooded a few years ago. Servpro came in and un finished our basement. 2 days later I noticed chest freezer unplugged. 3 deer and 4 turkey breasts gone. Sad day.

Wow that's horrible, I used to keep it locked all the time but I slacked with that lately since the wife was yelling about always having to find the key, now I'm paying for it.

I have a sending unit in my venison freezer and the receiving thermometer is by my computer . The freezer is 8 degrees right now . I did this after a chest freezer with venison crapped out a few years ago .

Have a link to that unit Eddie??

Sorry to hear about that.   We would be forced to eat a lot more chicken if that ever happened to us.   I usually check on our basement freezer every day when I am home.  It is a 1981 Montgomery-Ward upright that has survived two floods where the motor and condenser was completely submerged.   The new ones might use less electricty but I don't think they would be that durable.

Whenever our power goes out (which thankfully does not happen too often), I run the first extension cord from the generator to the sump-pump, and the second to the freezer.  It probably would not be a bad idea to can some venison "just in case".  Maybe I will get the wife a pressure cooker for Christmas this year.

If you have access to one, or even a real old-fashioned canner, you might try that with some of your extra that is thawed out now.  I would be more comfortable doing that than re-freezing it.  Any canned venison that my mother or friends have made thru the years has been spectacular.

What I have is a LaCrosse unit . Similar units can be purchased in many stores from $12 on up . Mine would be similar to the the one in the link that I am posting but I paid around $12 in a store a few years ago . Tractor Supply sells these type of thermometers . It is just an indoor / outdoor digital thermometer .

I guess I need to start searching for an alarm

An alarm would be nice if the freezer goes down but a easier solution to your problem is a bungie cord. We have a freezer that sometimes the door doesn't quite close enough to seal the door. I hooked a bungie from the back to the door handle to assure it is sealed each time. All you have to do is teach everyone that each time something is removed from the freezer to hook the bungie and you are good to go. Kind of redneck but saves looking for a key every time the freezer is opened.:)
