I know everyone's panties are in a bunch but this was out in late Feb from the CDC about the Common flu in the US. 

So far, 16,000 people have died and 280,000 people have been hospitalized during the 2019-2020 flu season, according to preliminary estimates from the CDC.

 

I believe we are at 30 currently for Corona.

The concern is the economy. With respect to health, the concern isn't deaths but moreso everyone getting this at the same time and companies, hospitals, etc. all forced to close. It appears they are trying to prevent everyone from getting it at the same time by staggering work shifts, moving to work from home, and eliminating mass gatherings. Westchester and NYC have some of the best doctors and hospitals in the world and people are being turned away for routine pediatrician appointments, outpatient surgeries, etc.

my whole concern all along is this snowball effect of panic.  Everything is closing.  Economically this will be hard to dig out of.  The government also needs to stop the panic and think they have to "do something" and overreact as well.  

Schools close, then daycares close and parents stay home from work, then no staffing at businesses and no business cause no one is out doing anything....snowball keeps rolling

As of an hour ago the Alden school district just canceled all trips outside of WNY for students and staff. They also are canceling any school program that would have 50 or more non student and staff attending along with no spectators at sporting events. 

I will guess that other districts will soon follow that as well.

1400 corona cases nation wide and 30 deaths. The panic is media and politically driven. the cases just don't support this level of panic in my opinion.

It's not the number of deaths currently, you have to look at the mortality rate. The mortality rate of the regular flu is around .1%. The coronavirus is floating at 3.2% worldwide. Let's put it in real numbers. 

Most would agree the mortality rate in the US will probably be lower than the world because of the quality of our healthcare system. So, let's run with a 2% rate, over 1% lower than the worldwide number. There are 330 million, 421 thousand people in the U.S.  We know that as of right now, a lot of the population will be affected, there's just no way around it, it's right now about how many are hit at once. So, if 100% of our population gets it, that means 2% die, so, 6 million 608 thousand people die from this thing. 

We know that not everyone will get it, but until there is a vaccine, there really isn't much protection. Let's say 20% of people get it, that means 1 million, 322 thousand die from it. 

Anytime we are looking at millions of people dying, that seems like a pretty legit reason to be concerned. Now, I am no math whiz, so please correct me if any of these are wrong.

That's over a 2% mortality rate. Please see my post above, not politically or media driven, this is a dangerous disease.

The IF and i it's a big IF. Is the 2% correct and will it hit the percentages of the population. I guess we'll have to see but I'm not buying it.

I agree. I said from day 1 this wouldn't be a story by easter. however, the feel in nyc is real now. Today is likely my last day at work for a while. I think we may close over the weekend, which would be historic. I'll work from home, but others may not get paid.

there will be mass layoffs for many companies and/or paycuts and lower or no bonuses, etc. this won't go on forever, but the recovery will take a lot lot longer.

I agree the rate is much lower because i think hundreds of thousands in NY have this with no symptoms.
