Rattler
The state's going broke, so they will come up with all sorts of ways to make you pay for anything they think you will pay for. https://thefederalistpapers.org/opinion/new-york-found-way-charge-people-looking-night-sky?fbclid=IwAR1KXgB4korM_re2hd5A_q2tiUOTSnsdt48VYCvuloKuQLV-QD--ZrFshCI
grampy
For the highest taxed state in the US, you'd think they would open more opportunities for people to enjoy a little leisure time activity? But no. In NY you gotta pay to play. No wonder more are leaving than coming in. I do love NY for outdoor activities. But hate their blood from a stone policies.

Dinsdale
This isn't new and dates back several years. The idea was to open parks normally closed after sundown. A Hudson Valley astronomy club regular meets at a park near me after hours and they use a similar system .Park is down in a bowl and allows for some of the light pollution to be blocked. Ever get a chance, go; these just aren't your basic telescopes. Some folks show up with computer controlled set ups that show some amazing views. And the coyotes hardly attack at all when you're out there.....on occasion one or two here and there dragged off screaming into the night. 3

DirtTime
Here's a thought, there's a lot of public land out there that you can roam around on 24 hours a day for free. Go to those places. You want to moan about a cost? Try going car camping in a place that does not allow you bring in wood, so you have to buy it there. Then they go from giving you enough wood to last a couple days for for $5, to small bundles of wood ( 7-8 pieces ) that won't last more then one night and charging $4. That put the pucker in my backside more then NYS opening parks for after hours star gazing and making you get a permit ever would.
Nomad
Four bucks for wood ? , you realize your talking to guys who drop four figures on a varmint rifle, 10k on a quad , thousands more on leases , cell cameras and Lord knows what else .
Rattler
So why does the state have to charge to do it? Couldn't it just open the parking lots in the parks for people who want to look at stars and tell them all the rest of the park is closed? diplomat019
Or if you want to look at the stars you can go to any other park in the whole state. From the hudson valley to the catskills up thru the adirondacks. Just stay away from the handful of state parks on long island. I avoid long island as much as i can. Culvercreek hunt club
NY is not alone. I worked with a guy from NH. His grandfather left him a mountainside plot of land when he died. He got married and they went to build a house on it. After moving in they noticed that if they took down some more trees they would have an unobstructed view across the valley of MT Washington. What a beautiful view out of the house. What they didn't realize was that local governments can tax you based on your view. His tax bill went up $10,000 based on the view alone and he ended up having to see the property becasue he couldn't afford it. Welcome to America.
