Cover scent

My Dad has always stuffed his hunting clothes into a huge bag filled with leaves and dirt.

Anyone else do this?

Or do you have some other type of cover scent?

i use to do that for years until they came out with earth cover scent it smells just like dirt i spray my clothes with that and toss them into a bag then i spray myself with it befor i walk to my stand and when i get to my stand.

I started doing the same thing but with Scent Killer. Hopefully it works.

I usually just use scent killers, like the laundry soap, shower soap, deodorant, etc. Last year I thought Id try those earth scent wafers. Never got picked off more in a season. Ill stick to nothing.

I use cigarettes,coffee bacon eggs toast...well you get the idea. I do spray my outer clothing and boots sometimes with scent killer plus, the old mix,it expired a year or so ago. I figure I paid for it,may as well use it up.I used to put my outer clothing in a bag with hemlock or pine bows for a day or 2. Then there was a time my grandfather had a tiny bottle of pine scent , the red stuff, you older gents will remember it,it was like thick pine sap and smelled 10x stronger than a pine tree sticking up your nose,lol....and thicker n chit. We used to put it on our hats and go hunting....a cure all back then for scent.

Those wafers are a supplement, not a lone scent-free product.

Throw them in a bag after washing with scent-free laundry soap & drying with same product sheets.

Pin one to my cap after spraying down with scent-free field spray.

Had deer underneath the stand.

Does it help - maybe. Does it scare them away - more than likely it's body movements & not the wafer.

If you use the pine wafer in the middle of the hardwoods..............

I don't waste the time or money.

It is impossible to hide one scent from a deer by adding another - they simply process both at the same time.

Their sense of smell is equal to or better then a dog - if you could hide/cover a scent, tracking dogs would not exist.

Thats not all I was using. I did my clothes like normal in the scent killer wash, sprayed down, took a scent killer shower, etc and then had a couple of wafers in my clothing tubs and pinned another to my hat or coat. Got picked off more times than I could count, and I dont think movement was the problem when I was standing still in a tree behind the trunk and could see the deer sniffing with their noses in the air. Stopped using them this year, havent been picked off that I know of yet. Id rather just try and get rid of my scent as much as I can and play the wind than try to cover myself up with something else.

I still havethose wafers in the little plastic can, anyone who wants them is welcome to them lol

Problem is people often confuse scent reduction with scent cover.

Two entirely different things.

You can reduce scent - you cannot hide it.

I just use everything non-scented. Was my clothes non-scented, spray down before walking into woods. I use non-scented body wash, deoderant, toothepaste, etc.......just 2 weeks ago in PA, I had 2 deer eating the bush I was sitting against on the ground.

when we smell for example a bowl of chicken riggies... we smell chicken riggies. a deer smells the chicken, the riggies, the peppers, mushrooms, etc.... and i think i do a pretty darn good job at keeping scents that alert deer at bay. the biggest issue i find that gives my position away is my breath. i have a mask in the works to try and curtail this problem but thats classified haha.

today was a good example of what i mean about breath. i had a doe literally 5 ft away from my ladder to my stand downwind of me. i held my breath for as long as i could while she munched on some ferns and went completely unnoticed as soon as id let out for more fresh air about 10 seconds later shed lift her head and look directly at me sniffing i was able to stay motionless and eventually she would go back to her ferns. this went on for 3 more cycles until she backed off and got upwind of me.

but as for everything other than my breath, i use the scent killer bar soap and body wash, odorless deoderant, wash my clothes in scent away, and use the earth scented drier sheets. i keep my clothes and everything in a tub filled with stripped pine bows and will spray scent away "fresh earth" before heading out along with doe urine on my boots and doe estrous when the time is right.

Until somebody can figure out how to sit down and conduct an interview with a deer, I'm not sure how I would ever get any level of confidence in any of it. Agree. In the woods, there's to many variables. This can easily be tested in a lab with a deer. I find it funny none of the companies do so and boast their results.

Test: Have several containers covered with the product. Place a treat in one of the containers. Bring deer into room. See if deer finds treat one first try. Keep doing this a bunch of times and see how many times the deer misses. If not deer, then a trained dog.

The only way I can keep deer from smelling me is to stay downwind of them...

Of course , at my age ,spastic colon and flatulence give me away....

PLUS it burns the nose hairs of unfortunate hunters downwind of me..

This is ESPECIALLY bad after an evening meal of limburger and onion sandwiches, followed up by a heaping helping of marshmallow cream corn willie fritters for desert..

Well, Ive told the story before about having a deer bed downwind of me, and he wasnt acting like anything was out of the ordinary until about 30 seconds after I lit a cigarette, and he sniffed the air for a second, jumped up and quickly got out of there. Or the fact that I got busted by deer downwind of me last year while I was using those scent wafers, but not since I stopped using them. I have also used the scent killer spray to get rid of stink on my dog and a few other things and it worked good. I dont have any scientific way of testing it, but from my experience its proof enough to me.

BTW, I dont believe that it works by eliminating all scent, it just reduces it to a level where it probably makes the deer figure that the human must be a distance away instead of right there.

ive used earth cover scent for years now and ive had deer bed down wind of me last year a doe bedded 23yards away from me down wind behind a bush for almost 45 minutes never scented me she got up and i sent my arrow on its way. i guess there might not really be a way to prove that it works but i sure wont go into the woods with out it.

Steve I have hunted in central new york for 27 years and i have tried it all from apples to leaves and dirt to cow dung. With age comes knowledge- wash your clothes in sports wash,hang them preferably outside for a few hours. Move from their into a scent free clothes bag , put them on to hunt in a scent free area no matter how cold it is out there. Spray down with scent killer before you leave and a couple times while on stand. Dont forget your equipment als needs to be as scent free as your clothes.(DONT HANG YOUR BOW AND RELEASE IN THE HOUSE WHILE MOMMAS COOKING DINNER)

I have put my hunting gear in a bag with leaves,I'm not shure if it worked but i ended up buying a plastic bin and i just wash my hunting gear and throw it in the bin.Works pretty good!
