the blur
Anyone open meat 2-3 hours after is vacuumed packed? (not after it's frozen and defrosted) But immediately after it's packaged. I opened 2 packages to BBQ, and the SULFUR odor was so bad, I threw the meat away. Not sure if the meat was bad, or it was from the vacuum packing process. it was terrilble. Stunk out the entire room.
jr.deerslayer
I have maybe waited 45 minutes or so, when a bag doesn't seal properly. I have reopened the bag and transferred it to another...but never noticed anything.
backbeach
I just opened a vacum pac of meat from 10/2010 and it still smelled good its the last from last year.I also recently opened some tuna from last year and it still was good.I think your meat might be bad . WNYBuckHunter
The only thing that happens in the vacuum packing process is air is sucked out and the bag sealed with heat. The meat must have been bad in the first place. I have opened it after just staying in the fridge for a day or so and had no issues.
Doewhacker
Yikes, nothing worse than stinky meat. In fancy packaged steaks they add (I think) nitrogen to help keep the meat for longer. Not the case here obviously, just a useless tib bit I wanted to share...lol
Gizmo285
Not to steal the thread but what kind of vacuum sealers are you using out there and what are the pros and cons in real life. I was going to buy one but they all seem to get terrible reviews. I bought some ziplock vacuum seal bags and used my vacuum cleaner hose to suck them down and it seems to work. If I knew of a good one that worked I would buy it as long as I know it works and holds the seal. Thanks. hunterjohn
food saver brand is the original and works great you just have to keep it clean and sometime double seal ( left over pasta and sauce )you can seal once its not going to seal from the mositure so wipe it dry and seal it again works great. Gizmo285
There are a lot of different models out there. Which one are you using??
blackradio
I bought a foodsaver vss44 for $21 shipped on Slickdeals.com and it's awesome. I butchered my deer up yesterday and vacuum sealed every serving of meat.
Fitzy
I bought a Foodsaver a couple of years ago at Sams Club.I think it was around $140! One of the best investments I've ever made. I've had game keep for over a year and a half with no spoilage or freezer burn! The bag material is a little pricey but can be found on sale. It's great when buying in bulk and packaging into one meal sizes.
13BVET
You're not, by any chance, rinsing the meat off with sulphur water, are you? Are you letting the meat sit for a bit after rinsing to make sure as much moisture is off as possible?
WNYBuckHunter
So I tried sealing some steaks and then opened the package after 4 hours, no odd smells or anything.Meat smelled the same as it did when I packaged it.
Karpteach
I use an old food saver! Never had a problem with any smells?
the blur
Just to let you know, I threw away the entire deer. The sulfur odor from the meat was nasty, nasty. purtrid. Wasn't worth getting sick over. And the butcher was clueless, and I'll never go back to him.
fasteddie
I have never heard of this happening . I have a FoodSaver vacuum Sealer and all it does is remove air . It doesn't draw any odors .
Gizmo285
Old post but I just openend a tube of venision sausage I vacuum packed with a food saver back in November. I had it in the freezer and let it thaw in the fridge. Tasted better than when I first made it. No freezer burn or anything. Just FYI.. landtracdeerhunter
Why would the meat smell like sulfur? Smelled plenty of stinky rotten meat, non of it smelling like sulfur. A food saver bag will last for more than a year. Not with venison though- 6 months. Edited June 28, 2012 by landtracdeerhunter
WNYBuckHunter
6 months? Ive had it for well over a year with no issues. I still have half a freezer full of sausage, steaks, backstrap, roasts, etc from this past season and its all perfect.

wdswtr
I just dug into the bottom of my chest freezer and found 2 packages of 2009 venison and let me tell you it tasted just as good off the grill as the 2011 steak cooked right next to it, and yep it was all in vacumed sealed bags.

WNYBuckHunter
You joke about the BBQ, but it just may happen. We are in sit and wait for the bank to finish the paperwork, etc mode right now. Expected closing date is July 27, so its getting close!
