Maybe we should have a photo on our hunting license and our tag's.I know this will only help if hunter's are questioned/caught with the deer.I also know you cant stp some from doing what they want to do,The DEC need's to stop allowing the transfer of tag's except to trade for an area that you would like to hunt. Now I am in trouble for my opinion.2 points

The issue is bigger than AR's in my mind. The DEC is becoming more restrictive in area's where deer are plentiful for what reason. DMU permints in 4W are already low probability to be issued. Now we a shooter buck is 3 or better on one side. The rpple effects will be far worse than hunters not getting deer economically, I think. Who's gonna hunt there if you can't take anything in the rea unless its an older buck. Besides, plenty of us are still in it for theeating. So with low probability on DMU permits in 4W, thanks for a lot of hunters likely going hungry. I'm sure I will have many kind words to say about the DEC when I'm siting in my stand with NO DMU permits watching an endless parade of does walking by me. Oh and by the way,...... The AR's are a feel good with no bioloical benefit at all. Thanks again DEC.2 points

As a true NYer, we are not allowed to eat at any chain pizza joints. You can only buy pizza from a guy who wear tomatoe sauce and flour on his dirty wife beater shirt. It's the law. Finally something that everyone on this forum should be able to agree on!!!2 points

They aren't reporting on all the killings that are happening in Chicago right now. You know black on black violence. They only report white on black violence and when there is none to report they make it white on black violence like with Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin. If Zimmerman is a white guy then I'm Santa Claus.1 point

The whole idea of modern deer management was based on it... it is by far the most lacking natural occurance in the whitetail world... the studies I have done with captive deer back in the 90's where ratios are near 1:1 show exactly what I explained to you... young bucks are very submissive when there is a balanced age structure and strict hierarchy... does will gravitate towards the stronger more dominant bucks in the group... not to say that in the wild there wouldn't be isolated cases of aggressive young bucks during the 2nd and 3rd estrus cycles... but in the cases I've seen personally... as the buck:doe ratio got closer almost all does got bred early seeking out the mature more dominant bucks... and as a general rule young bucks became very subdued because older bucks get so aggressive that they will actually kill young bucks that got too agressive.. I've even seen the most dominant of the group kill other mature bucks... in fact in one case a nine year old buck had to be removed from the herd because he was getting too dangerous during the breeding season. In NY over the years the ratios got so far away and the lack of older age classes allowed young bucks to be the main breeders in many herds, and because hunter took so many bucks compared to does there were not enough bucks to get most does bred early... this leads to later born fawns.. lesser body weights for fawns entering their first winter.. and all around tougher time for deer.1 point

I hope he does have to raise his prices and that it will result in that franchise disappearing- I can't stand seeing his twitchy face on tv all the time. Crap pizza- I don't understand how they stay in business, especially here in the tri-state area where there is great pizza all around.1 point

Might be a trick on state land, but with the ability of permission slips for transport and how everyone is in constant communication on cell phones, it truely would be a cake walk on a private lot. undated, signed permission slip in the pocket....one phone call. "Honey, you shot a 4 point today, congratulations"1 point

There are plenty of ways to justify hunting if it becomes important to you to do that. I have seen the results of over-population among deer, and believe me it wasn't a pretty sight. I have heard the death squeal of a rabbit that someone already mentioned. It's a pretty hideous sound as an owl or some other predator rips chunks of meat out of the critter. I have seen the results of a deer kill after dogs had run it to ground over a long distance, weakening it a bite at a time until it fell from blood loss. I would imagine that coyotes operate in the same way. I have put down a coon suffering from distemper, and a fox suffering from an extreme case of mange. These are all very agonizing ways to die and usually are quite slow to provide relief from a suffering death. All these things remind me that it truly is the lucky critter that dies by my bullet. Mother Nature's ways of disposing of the critters is not a very kind or gentle way. I suspect that none of them die peacefully in their bed from old age. Disney painted a pretty tranquil and innocent picture of the lives of animals living merrily in the wild, but that was pure fantasy as it was intended to be. The realities are much more harsh ..... everytime. Whenever you get "hunter's remorse", just think about the alternate ways that your prey has of dying. That might help with any guilt feelings you might have. Also when talking about the ethics and morality of hunting, I agree that you always should make every effort to provide as humane a death as possible. I think it is also important to use the animal in whatever way is practical when there is a practical use for it. But I don't rate any animal as unhuntable simply because I can't eat it. If I can eat it, that's a bonus. What I don't do is to spend a lot of time anguishing over the fact that hunting usually means death as an end product. Hunting and the results of hunting simply inserts me into the natural cycle of life and death in the wild that is part of existance. And I see myself as one of the positive forces in that cycle.1 point

My 2 sons that hunt didn't get into deer hunting until they were in their 20's . One didn't have the time . The other hadn't been interested . Slowly they got into it and now on a regular basis . I have taken a couple boys ( at different times ) hunting on opening day of gun season . One shot a doe . The other missed a forkhorn . They saw deer and were happy . Once the shooting started , they saw plenty of deer and were very excited . One of the things that allowed them to see many deer is the fact that it was opening day and more hunters were out . I carried my shotgun but never shot while either was with me . I showed and explained how to gut a deer to the boy who shot the doe as I had never been taught and struggled through my 1st two field dressings . The boys fathers didn't hunt . As far as I know , those 2 still deer hunt as well as other hunting and I had lost contact with them . I had taken another teenager hunting who is the son of a close friend who doesn't hunt . My son invited him up to his camp and Jeff has gotten deer there . NYslowhand has allowed this lad to hunt his property in Sodus and Jeff has lucked out . All the above started out with regular gun season and didn't need something "special" for an advantage . Personally , I don't think there needs to be a special youth season but if and when it happens , so be it . I think a lot of the kids are growing up to be spoiled wimps !1 point

I think im coming around to this one buck a yr thing and shorter gun season expanded muzzleloader , crossbow, and bow seasons. IMO its sounding like a better choice since the greatest % of deer are killed on the first day of gun and that first week. But im sure someone would have some beef with that also. The DEC would never go for it either, it would get in the way of thier plan to obliterate NY's deer herd!!1 point

I'd poach a human before a deer if I was starving. Humans are much easier to find and I heard humans taste better than deer anyway.1 point

Apparently anyone who disagrees with wtswtr is selfish . Well , let the selfish Dads take their kids out opening day of regular gun season and see the real world . But then Dad might have to pass up the buck of a lifetime . It doesn't affect me either . I have not come across any squirrel , bird , etc hunters when bow hunting . If I did they would have to have trespassed to get onto the property .1 point

i would live off family and friends then maybe the land before welfare. I think some people should be forced to live off the land for the purpose of learning how to be self sufficient instead of me supporting them.1 point

Few pics I took today of the food plots. Wow a lot of tree's are down up here in Sullivan. Anyways, the plots look like they are coming a long OK, we have had a few inches of rain the last 7 days so that has to be helping things. These first two are from the corn plot...1 point

The "special" season has been tried, was a huge success and still is for a youth turkey hunt. What makes you feel that since this tried program worked once in NY already that it cannot be the same for a youth deer hunt? Until it actually has been tried why the constant bashing of it? Incase some people havent noticed America has changed, NY has changed our adult and youth way of thinking has changed, if we dont change or atleast try different things to changed a failing system then we are all fools. Its pretty clear we as mentors are failing on our part with overall numbers to be a mentor to the youth to get them in the field, theres no denying it by anyone because the numbers are proof. Instead of just sitting back and do nothing an attempt is being made that was a success once already. Most kids these days want that Im special feeling regardless of what we think about that. This is eactly what the Special Youth hunt does, gives them that and a time shared with an adult mentor they can call thier time in the woods for a few days. What the hell is so damn wrong with that? Not a thing, nothing, nadda, zippo, zilch. Its a far better attempt and something to start with versus sitting on there ass watching the numbers drop.1 point
