  1. Most feel good laws are fairly new, thank disney for humanizing animals (read the book bambi felix salten wrote in the late 1800 that bambi was made from its a real eye opener), many a cat/kittens been drowned in gunny sacks on the farm when i was a kid. same as taking them to a shelter and them putting them down only a vet doesn't get rich, or a pet cemetary.... i even had to put down my own horse when i was 12 , grandpa showed me the place to aim behind the ear. bang flop. better than letting it suffer and learning the value of life growing up on a farm are things that most of suburbia will never understand so they just make laws to uphold their own beliefs.

  4. I personally wouldn't plant brassica a third year in a row. I also wouldn't mix it with clover...better off strip planting that instead of blending. Bit late for pruning imo.

  5. Here's the thing...this all depends on time and cash.....not to mention how much activity you want to have in that area....So many factors to consider....How the deer have used the area in the past and now..buck or doe....will you be pushing deer out...these to name a few. Back to actual planting as you can tell by responses and I practice this as well...going with annuals the first year ends in saving time and money down the road...Once a spray down occurs...you go in and disturb the soil...that brings old weed seed to the surface and BAM!...you have more weeds than you started with....for now, sun light and improved soil with liming , fertilizing and better water absorption ad up to great growing conditions...weed seeds can lay dormant for 10's of years besides the spring vs fall weeds....We usually find guys have better luck with a spray....2wk wait spray and 2wk wait to start with...and lime...it takes 6mos. to a year to really do its job in bringing the ph to good levels...There are some good annuals that deer love are less expensive and act as weed inhalators plants...winter wheat....ground hog radish ...buckwheat in the summer or a combination of these...Google the high lights and you'll pull up a lot of info. There is only two ways to control weeds....through expensive spraying program or mowing at the proper times....before seed heads appear...but some weeds spread from roots and others mow them and they produce fruiting parts faster and lower to the ground....

  7. What do you think those dogs running deer do when deer aren't around.....they are out killing sheep, goats, calves, chickens, turkeys...ect...and here's a bit of info for you....once a chaser/killer ALWAYS one...once a biter ALWAYS one...once they get that excitement of the chase and kill...if they have anything that turns that switch on.... in front of them, for what ever reason..... then you have more than dead deer to contend with. As far as this being a bad subject for hunters to discuss...Well too bad here's something for you Polly Annas out there... If you decide to move to the country with your pets....LEARN TO BE RESPECTFUL RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERS 1. just because there are no side walks...doesn't mean you don't have to pick up your dogs shit 2. darkness doesn't mean it's OK that your animals go out unattended 3. What you own is yours..what I own is mine...pets are property period...keep your property off of mine. 4. If your dog is missing....Then some where along the line YOU made a bad choice.

  9. Dogs will be dogs...and, given the chance, some will chase deer. Big deal! If it happens, the problem lies with the dog's owner, not the dog. Do not shoot the dog if you are unwilling to shoot the owner. Where, is it inscribed in stone that deer are worth more than dogs? Face it...men who shoot dogs are pussies!

  10. Doewacker..I did shoot a neighbors dog...the DEC told me I was lucky I had my gun on me...no court...no ticket..I called the cops they investigated it..I was well in my legal rights...what part of protecting ones self and livestock on their property don't you get? By the way Yes very illegal to shoot a dog that is chasing deer...take pics for it cost the owners a lot of money when you have proof... Then the second time ...the DEC with eat the cost of putting the dog down...save your self the cost of a bullet. (sp)

  12. Well sarcasm is always a good way to go when you don't have a legitimate argument...and exaggeration as well.....I'm impressed, it only took you nearly two hrs to think that up .... Really why wouldn't they believe me when I called after the lab charged me and I shot.....when I didn't shoot the shepherd in the pic ...but returned their other dog unharmed....when I ended up being taken by ambulance to the hospital due to my thigh muscle tearing ....Because a neighbors dog chased me as I ran backwards up our hill defending myself with a tree limb......Why ? because I yelled at it as it chased deer through our woods...or when the dogs from a half mile away treed me in a stand then went on to bite another neighbor.....Or the two pitbulls from a mile away chased me down the drive and circled the house as I called the sheriff...I have no problem calling the authorities when I have to defend my self...I have a legal right to do so...and to carry my rifle with me...

  13. My husband is the same way. He will put a animal or pet down to stop its suffering, he hates doing it but it is done for the animal. I think after so many times it has to effect a person , even a vet. I don't think i could do it myself.

  18. so it's ok for him to slander the name of a dead man, but nobody can slander him? Sounds like he can dish it out and can't take it. Has he seen some of the outrage against the anti-gun supporters? what did he think would happen?

  19. These are the kinds of people that are passing these laws, and this is the mentality of those people. What I found discouraging was that the entire room didn't break-up with laughter. I was looking at the faces of other members seated at the table and they all had this serious expression on their faces like she was actually making sense.

  21. Do yourself a favor and go to a real feed and grain supply store in that area, not a big chain store and ask what grows in the area you want to plant. Not everything grows well in every part of the state. And first have the soil tested.I would love to plant winter wheat and winter oats on my land but it just won't make it.The soil and weather conditions vary in each part of NY.

  22. sounds like you need to do a bunch of prep first. over grown fields are a lot to recover there are lots of dormant seeds to deal with. looks like you'll be planting this fall, double cross will work and i'm with grow... alfalfa on the slope. you may want to plant that with winter wheat if your looking to draw deer this year. clovers and alfalfa really need a year to get fully established, and follow the seeding rate , to much seed and the plot will choke itself out.

  23. I shot a couple of deer with them in my 25-06 and .260 Rem. They were accurate and seemed to perform as well as your average, cup/core type bullet. The deer died and as I remember , the meat damage was not excessive..

  26. I was going to stay out of this...until the last post...seeing I received some pretty nasty responses from a few on here when this was brought up before...That said.. Mike... that's all well and fine ...but if I have a weapon...which I now carry at all times on my land now ......and a dog runs at me...with my past court history...police and DEC calls...and medical bills...The dog will be dropped and I have no concerns of legal ramifications...See a hounds man could own a 2 million dollar dog...but when it is on my land and is an unknown threat to my personal safety...I retain the right to protect myself period...
