After not hearing one gobble all yesterday this morning started out great! Walking in i could hear birds gobbling on the roost a bunch! got to my blind (pre set-up) right @ 5:30 and quickly put out a feeding hen decoy and setup in the blind... i lightly yelped a few times to get the attention of the gobbler in the roost 150 yrds or so from where i was... he fired up right away gobbling like mad! once he flew down he pretty much came on the run an stopped @ about 40 yards strutting and gobbling... i just sat there for close to 1/2 an hour and enjoyed the show, calling every little while to keep him fired up... i wasnt gonna shoot cause i was thinking "ahhh too small prob a jake" at about 6:20 he came in to10 yards i couldnt resist anymore and decided to put a round of #3's thru his neck... upon closer inspection i found he actualy is a good sized bird! with an 8 1/2" beard and 1" spurs! all in all it was an awesome morning!!!!! cant wait to get my 2nd bird now!!! i just realized as i was posting this that the tag wasnt on the turkey when i was taking pics so i ran out and snapped another pic showing the tag as stated in the contest rules... Redneck ingenuity when taking pics blind stool works great for propping up fan lol3 points

I got in early, 5:20 they were singing my song, 1 to the East and 2 to the west , just about 100 yards over the Water… 5:50 they were on the ground just a hammering … The Two to the west were answering everything I threw at them… but were heading away from me… lol as usual . So I shut my calling down for about 20 min .. Hit the call again.. and Bam… He was in my lap… here he came looking for his long lost mistress… 10" beard 1 1/8 spur2 points

Had a friend ask me to take her turkey hunting, so we set out this am at 510. walked 200 yards and i gave an owl hoot, and had a bird anser about 75 yards away. we snuck in and set up 60 yards or so from the tom. tom. a hen started calling to our left and after 15 or so minutes of gobbling the bird pitched down and went toward the hen. a calling contest ensued for the next hour with several jakes and other hens joining the group 50 yards below us. finally the boss hen started to drag the tom away, but not before a jack came in range of her 20 guage gun at 12 yards... her aim was slightly off as she hit some brush in front of it and the bird managed to get airborne and landed in a tree. the other birds got quiet but we didnt move. after 5 min of watching the bird swaying on its roost limb, it dropped to the ground. i told her i stand up and see if it was dead. i could see it with its head up about 45 yards from us. asecond shot finished it. she had her first bird!!! as birds erupted from all around the flat and looking to my left i saw a jake standing in bewilderment about 50 yards from me. a quick shot from my 835 and the double was complete!2 points

Took a chance on a piece of ground I've never turkey hunted this morning. I wasn't even at my spot before I had birds hammering off on a neighboring property. At about 630 I was working on a bird a few hundred yards away when one went off 60 yards from me. I look over and he's a giant double beard. Out of the corner of my eye I catch more movement... And notice my decoy decided to fall over Hahaha safe to say this Tom was outta there. I can't be disappointed though because I now know this property holds birds. Positive attitudelol2 points

Bagged one at 6:05 this morning. Beard was 8-1/4", spurs were both a hair over 7/8", and even though it doesn't count, he weighed 20lbs. 9oz.2 points

9G, 9H had one on opening day at 100 yards, never made a sound, was pure luck I even saw him. He left, heard some gobbles then someone's shotgun went off from that direction. Went to another spot, 3 birds responded to a cutt then dead silence, never saw or heard them again. Day 2 had one right off the roost, i played hard to get, he gobbled at 75 yards about 45-50 yards then bam someone's shotgun goes off, definitely for that bird, and a little too close for comfort. Day 3 went to new area with a buddy, no sounds whatsoever. Sat till 10 decided to have a look around, there's a logging road adjacent to where we were. Found scat, a ton of scratches, and tracks, looks like a big bird. Had to have been from the previous evening. At least I know where to setup next time there. Left went to 9H, no sounds at all, hit a few calls, nothing. Walk 60 yards, bam 2 Jakes walking right up the side of a ravine. Spooked em. Its my rookie year and I'm loving every minute of it. I think its just a matter of time before I connect.1 point

My brother in law got a jake this am also OK heres the story now that I am done with cleaning the bird and doing a few things around the house.Got to the farm at 5am,loaded up and headed out.The night before we saw 2 birds heading into the block of woods but didn't see where they went after they went in and it was an hour before sundown so I know they would be in a different roost. My friend wanted to sit right where the birds went in so I went over to were I figure they roosted.I was within 30 yards of where I wanted to sit when a one gobbled on the roost,I knew I was going to be in the right spot!! I got under a big cherry and started to clear the leaves when a big flock busted 20 yards to my left.I thought that was it the birds are gone,so I settled in for the long sit. After 15 minutes I heard a gobble so I knew he was still there.I let out a few purrs and watched him fly down from the roost at 625,he and another the same size came strutting in and when they hit the 40 yard mark I let him have it.The other just sat there like he had a "WTF" look on him.,not moving just a few clucks. He was down for the count so I just watched his buddy and hoped he would run by my friend. No such luck so that ended my day.Now its my daughters turn, she wanted to spend the night at a friends and she is regretting that!!!!LOL1 point

Not a gobble yesterday or today. Not on the evening roost, or the morning roost, or on the ground. Crazy how one day they are blowing up from 9am till noon and then nothing for the next two days. Well that's turkey hunting. Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk1 point

I recently spent $6,500 on a young registered Black Angus bull. I put him out with the herd but he just ate grass and wouldn't even look at a cow. I was beginning to think I had paid more for that bull than he was worth. Anyhow, I had the vet come and have a look at him. He said the bull was very healthy, but possibly just a little young, so he gave me some pills to feed him once per day. The bull started to service the cows within two days, all my cows! He even broke through the fence and bred with all of my neighbor's cows! He's like a machine! I don't know what was in the pills the vet gave him... but they kind of taste like peppermint.1 point

I don't think that turkey is as comfortable in that seat as you might have been. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Congrats to everyone scoring gobblers! I've had an eventful but disappointing morning... About an hour after the crows started hollering I began lightly working my mad hatchet. 15 minutes later (6:45) there was a nice bearded lad 20 yds out my side window. I drew back waited for broadside aimed at the upper wing and released. Pop...bird flopped just into the woods and I was already on my way out of the blind and nocking another arrow. Got out of the blind and I could hear him trying to fly but flopping...but couldn't see him...never did again. Here's the crime scene: Bottom half of wing sliced off: Last sign 10 yds away...breast feathers: Broadhead was full of feathers but that's it, did not pass through, most likely did not even penetrate the chest cavity...almost no blood. Searched using concentric circles and game cam footage and found no new clues. Hands and knees, nothing. If he managed to fly I'd be impressed, but he still sure could run. If this was deer season I'd still be looking (and I'm gonna take another set of circles before I leave) but with a non-lethal shot I don't think there's anyway I'm catching up to that bird. At 9:15 I heard a gobble above my blind so I decided to head back and try again...I adjusted my hen and got back in the blind. Hit the mad hatchet about 3 lil purrs and bam another Tom 35 yds out the front window. I drew back but hesitated because it was at the end of my range out of this blind and I did not want to make a marginal shot and perhaps wound another bird. Another personal reminder that archery is not easy...and that shot placement is critical. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

When I bought my property, I looked online for the tax maps, and got the contact info for the neighbors. All appreciated me saying Hi. I didn't have any problems to address with them, but it opened the door for communication. That is where I would start...a friendly phone call to each neighbor, with an additional mention of...oh, by the way, you or any acquaintances wouldn't happen to have tree stands on the land, would you? It is now posted, and I need them removed. They may very readily admit it, and don't hassle them, Just tell them you are preparing for next season and need them removed asap. Stop in for a friendly visit with them and just mention afterwards you are starting to pull the treestands, and any still on are going on Craigs LIst. Recruit several reliable friends to be around each week or as often as possible prior to opening for a presence, and sure as hell have a full house for the opening days to reinforce your presence.1 point

Nope, it's a box call. It practically plays itself that's why I like it so much. I put some Lohmans "Box Call Magic" solution on it once a year, and that keeps it singing in the rain as well. http://www.primos.com/products/turkey-calls/box-cutter/1 point

I would take them down and put a posted sign on the tree with your # on it. Look at the tax maps and call all the neighboring property owners letting them know whats up and where they can find their stands(might give you a chance for a face to face meet also). Explain to them that you realize it has been un-posted for years, but that you have paid to lease the property and would appreciate their respect, as friendly like as possible to start. Good neighbor relations are priceless. They are more likely to stay off if you are someone they can relate to than some out of area jack#@#@# throwing your money around and booting them off "their" local lands.. Oh and do not forget to mention the 1/2 dozen trail cams you have placed(true or not) around the property.1 point

You may be over-calling, but this happens to me a lot. The bird doesn't see the hen he is looking for, and smells a rat. Call very sporadically and just have patience, he may get suicidal, or you may draw another bird in with all the commotion. Like others have said, very few "given"s in turkey hunting.1 point

Youtube it. Basically set the bird on a stake, cover with a metal can and have charcoal around the outside bottom of can. Turns out pretty good1 point

I took my 12 year old daughter out for her very first hunt saturday. We were hunting in 7M near Hamilton. The weather was very cool and windy. Preliminary scouting showed no birds in the fields as we were drove around for a couple days. I have to laugh at myself. I spent daaaaaaays getting my daugher prepped. Shopping for youth camo (which is very hard to find this time of year btw), practicing with the shotgun, learning different commands, turkey calling, tick spray, good boots, you name it I waaaas ready! Or so I thought.......... About 45 minutes into the hunt we had a gobble and he was coming in. I sat my daughter down, made sure she was comfortable and I sat right down behind her. I started calling and after a couple minutes I heard a wimper. Then a few moments later the words, "Dad I don't feel good". Then came, "Dad, I'm gonna throw up". Now I know she didn't eat well, no one can eat at 4:30 in the morning. So I told her to relax and breath, it will go away. Then came words my daughter never says, "I want to go home". At this point I was stumped but I did not want her upset. So we backed out so not to wise up the gobbler. Come to find out after questioning, she told me that she was shaking all over and her stomach was upset. Aha!!! Dr. Daddy has made his diagnoses. What you have babygirl is a severe case of buck/turkey fever. Made me smile. I was so prepped for everything but I didn't teach her how to handle a severe dumpage of adrenaline. It rushed over her so fast, she got sick. After some more breakfast we spent the rest of the morning just walking the woods together. She managed to talk to a bird on her own but chose not to shoot it. Next weekend I'm going to take her out again but she can sit beside me and together we will call in a bird that either one of us can shoot. All in all, we walked two large pieces of property and saw or heard only 3 birds. 2 toms and 1 hen.1 point

Those will work just fine. I've never used anything but the cheap collapsible foam Featherflex and Deltas. They fool plenty of gobblers.1 point
