  1. My buddy and I watched up to 40 deer pour into one particular field a few nights in a row, so he set a GoPro on the trail

  2. I'll agree with that right up to the point of it not phasing you in the least. I hope that as hunters, most of us probably cringe at the thought of a shot we've inflicted result in the wounding and suffering of an animal for any period of time longer than desired. We bust each others asses when we hear of marginal shots being taken for this reason. I would hope none of us here enjoys seeing a deer suffer any longer than they have to for any reason. I know you can't control the weather, but I get a bit annoyed when the tears only start to fall when there's a wall of tines attached to the remains, and the rest get shrugged off as mother nature running her course. While I try not to interfere with some of the natural things I see happening on some of my hikes, occasionally I get a little wrapped up in the moment and let my natural "human side" come through on the inside without intervention. It's pretty easy for me to walk by 20-30 carcasses of all shapes and sizes in a shed season without batting an eye, and I'm sure that's what you were getting at as well, but when you see the suffering happening right before you, it makes you think about things a little differently although there's nothing to possibly be done.

  3. The Patriot Act was originally made law to help protect the citizens. It is now being used to help protect the government. Most people don't understand that distinction, and the followers of the current administration are particularly blind to it, although the participants of that administration are definitely not. The very same thing can be said of every regulatory bureaucracy currently in place. It doesn't matter how they were started, or by whom, or for what reason. What matters is how they are currently being used, and to what end. It doesn't take a lot of study to see where agencies like EPA, FDA, FCC, BLM, and a host of others are currently headed. The tragic part of this scenario is that it has set a precedent that future leaders and lawmakers will almost certainly be compelled to follow. See Diplomat019's image above. The next POTUS will be handed a system that has been steadily broken from within over the past several decades. Change won't even begin to happen from within that system until the citizens decide whether they want to be governed, or ruled.

  4. Horns are from an interesting animal that was anatomically challenged for a guy, one stunted testicle. Female body characteristics, slender neck, and thin build; expected for deformed reproductive tract. Decent horn length...about 53", but slender and not much mass for age, estimated about 6-7. Hot day, around 105* when hunting, took him about noon. PH had been after him for a few years to get him out of the gene pool for the area, but we realised that breeding was a long shot after examination. A solid male taken on the same hunt and just a few miles away....

  5. I am not sure what you mean by that. Maine and 19 other states allow voter referendum. That is, if sufficient petition signatures are gathered, a particular proposal can be included on the ballot in the state general election. This is why these actions are called "ballot initiatives" "referendums", "voter referendums." "ballot referendums,", etc.. A local organization in Maine which opposed several methods of taking bear, with the support of the HSUS, succeeded in adding a ballot referendum in a recent election. The initiative, though reported by national pro-hunting organizations as defeated by a wide margin, was in fact, defeated by a narrow margin. The HSUS supported the effort in a number of ways, including contracting with PCI Consultants. This contractor, based in California, according to the article, had a team go to Maine to promote the referendum and gather petition signatures. According to some people, that may be illegal under Maine law, but it turned out it was not illegal. A Maine pro-bear hunting organization pressed state lawmakers to introduce a bill which would prohibit or make certain stipulations, such as out of state persons doing grass roots campaigning were a badge and disclose their employment history. However, similar proposals have been shot down in other states, including by a court ruling that such a law is unconstitutional. The first link I provided is to an article discussing this legislation in Maine and elsewhere. The second link I provided is to the website of the contractor hired by the HSUS. As do many business, they list on their website work they have done as testimonials of their effectiveness. This company has testimonials in the form of a slide show. The second or third slide they are bragging about their successful push to ban dove hunting in Michigan by referendum when contracted by the HSUS to do so. I find this all interesting and perhaps a double-edged sword. We have been involved in using petitions, although we don't have the ability for ballot initiatives in NY, we are using them a different way. We also reached out to seven of the other eight states that do not allow dove hunting ( there is virtually no mourning doves in Alaska, so we left them out); and the 11 states that do not allow Sunday hunting. We entered a partnership with a number of sportsmen in NJ. Although it turned out after verification, that our critics in NJ were actually anti-hunters pretending to be hunters (complete with photos of them with guns and harvested game) who have even attended state and county meetings of hunting organizations and/or have been or are elected officers of such clubs, have attacked our efforts to help NJ sportsmen, legalize Sunday hunting in NJ (they oppose Sunday hunting), because we are not NJ residents. The same persons who claim to be hunters, in addition to being opposed to Sunday hunting, are also opposed to mute swan management in NJ, spinning wing decoys for duck hunting, and pheasant stocking, even going so far as to constantly mock and criticize NJ hunters who pursue pheasant, including youth hunting opportunities for pheasant hunting.

  6. Funny, although I'm a hunter and killer of these creatures it pains me greatly to see this. Much like a car/deer collision it is a sad occurrence and painful to view. Thanks for the picture wooly, it makes me appreciate them even more if you know what I mean.......... RIP little buck fawn.

  7. Looks like March will be the beginning of the end for a lot of deer around here in 9h. I was just down this exact creek bottom trail yesterday afternoon just to stretch my legs. This is my daily hike with the camera until the snow melts back a bit for me to get into the timber more. Some time between yesterday and this evening, this little button buck bedded down in the hemlocks and died right in my boot tracks from yesterday. At this rate, I'm preparing for one of the worst dead deer seasons I've ever seen and I haven't even come close to accumulating any kind of serious hike time or mileage. Sorry for another dead deer pic, but I think you all get the point about how this winter is unfolding here. Like I said this happened sometime within the last 24hrs. Bare ground tomorrow couldn't reverse winters strangle hold at this point. The damage has already been done, and now they are dropping like flys. Some of you guys that like to bash on hunters for killing fawns and yearlings really need to get a grip if you think this is a pleasant way to die. I've seen it.., and it's NOT!

  8. The weatherman is panicking at the potential for losing his doom and gloom, ratings-boosting nightly forecasting with the advent of the warmer weather. So now they are all hyping up what they call the "return to winter" during the last two weeks of March. No they are not calling for a return to -30 degrees of wind-chill, but they are ranting and raving about the return of colder weather and more snow. Well, that's not surprising news. March is noted for at least one big ugly storm of heavy, sloppy, gloppy, heart-attack inducing, snow. No, winter is not done with us yet. I can even remember a 6" snowstorm in May. And I can remember quite a few snowy Easter-egg hunts. So there is no need to break out the shorts just yet. But it probably is not a real good idea to completely buy into the whining and hand-wringing of the weathermen either. Lately, they seem to be more interested in ratings and sensationalism than accurate forecasting.

  10. I am hoping that last years members will be participating in this years hunt, the stories were very nice to read and i am sure you all had a great time with the kids. Do we have other members that will be taking a youth out or know of anyone that would like to enter? Would be great to hear the stories they will have at the end of the hunt.

  12. I tried getting out to walk some fields looking for sheds today and all of the spot that I wanted to check had deer out in them already...so, I just let them be. As I mentioned earlier, I'm seeing a lot of fawns which makes me optimistic about the winter kill. Winter isn't over yet but conditions are certainly FAR better than they were even a week ago. Saw quite a few turkeys today too.

  16. My recipe is pretty straight forward. Meat Taters Cream style corn S+P My last few batches have included an envelope of taco seasoning that gives it an extra kick, and I prefer to eat it cold after the taters firm up a bit. I could eat it every day!

  17. Nice footage, and they look to be in pretty good shape, considering the winter they endured. Come on spring!

  18. You just can't kill some of those old bands. I saw Alice Cooper back in my high school days. The guy actually cut his own head off on stage with a guillotine and continued to do several sets after that, lol! Pretty cool show with him incorporating his illusion performances throughout. My buddy won the tickets from 97 Rock along with backstage passes. When it was time for me to snap a pic of him and Alice together backstage I cut both their heads off. You just never knew what you were going to get back from those old 35mm disposable cameras, lol

  19. Taking my son out for his second youth hunt. Last year (his first) was a successful one. Hoping he connects this year too!! Good luck to all the "youts" heading out!

  20. Given all the costs involved with taking ones kid on a youth waterfowl hunt... It baffles me how an extra $25 would be the deal breaker for the OP to not take his daughter hunting. I realize that sometimes we feel like we're following some kind of principle or trying to make a point, but letting a duck stamp stand in the way of introducing your kid to hunting sounds a bit foolish to me. If it was a $250 stamp.. maybe.

  21. The time spent with family and friends in the field and the memories created are worth the price of admission, Honestly if the kid wants to do it; just go and do it, How much does a playstation cost,or a trip for 2 too Applebees, Seems to me that you could hunt more than a few weekends for those prices. Pass down the heritage one child at a time and hunting will be a privilege that the children will enjoy and their children will enjoy. Get them involved teach them, They are the next generation to carry on the traditions that we all love, Doesnt matter how much it costs. JMHO

  22. It's a bad weekend for me, but I am hoping to same my boys out on Sunday morning. They each got their first deer last fall, I'm hoping to get them their first turkeys this year.

  23. My daughter tried last year,I had a group of 5 jakes in front of her 2 different days and she couldn't pull the trigger.I was so happy she didn't because I would rather have her not if she doesn't want to kill anything. She is very kind hearted and doesn't have it in her.

  27. Maybe they'll come up with a compromise, which Democrats seem so willing to do all the time. I expect it will go something like, "If we can ban all handguns, we won't need to ban any of this rifle ammo." I can hear the clueless gun owners, who don't own any handguns, saying that would be a good compromise.

  28. He should tell us about it here..... http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/27007-early-bird-contest-to-the-youth-hunt-contest-deadline-to-enter-is-april-15/ A simple show of enthusiasm could land him a nice prize before the first turkey of the 2015 youth season rolls.

  31. Certainly not off topic Jennifer. Thanks for the additional historical range map. The presence of a huge and reliable mast resource certainly has a huge impact on the winter survivability of a species. A large cervid like the elk would certainly be in much better condition to survive. It all makes sense. I was impressed by the introductory scene of the 1992 movie "Last of the Mohegans" when Hawkeye cocks and fires his flintlock, his ball intercepting a prime eastern bull elk in mid flight. Chingachgook then takes out his knife and approaches the fallen bull reverently saying " We are sorry to kill you brother, we respect you strength and speed." (May not be the exact script) A scene like that is hard to forget. I found it interesting that the film considered the historical presence of the elk in the eastern forest environment.

  32. Gun.... $500.00 Ammo.... $30.00 Camo for 2.... $250.00 License... $50.00 Food.... $50.00 Transportation...$40.00 Seeing a kids face light up on their first hunt. Priceless!

  34. With all due respect that isn't the state sticking their hands in peoples pockets like they do in so many other ways. For one this is a Federal Duck Stamp. And two its $15 a year that goes towards conserving habitat for the birds and keeps you (and your kids) hunting them for years to come. Did I mention it's $15 a year?

  35. I was thinking somewhat along the same lines. I think the objective of the youth waterfowl season is to develop lasting participation in waterfowl hunting.

  37. I suspect that the DEC wants enthusiastic, knowledgeable, hunters to be filling the slot of "mentor". Perhaps the license requirement is a guaranteed attempt to do that but I can't think of any alternatives. Remember that a mentor is not to be confused with a "baby-sitter". There is a reason why you are out there accompanying a youth hunter. The hope is (and admittedly that all it is, is a "hope") that at least one of the two of you will be experienced in hunting, safety, and game identification. It may not be any guarantee, but I do think it is a worthwhile requirement that works most of the time.
