  1. I was debating on whether to let him walk this morning but considering it’s my last day out and I haven’t had any venison in 3 years …… I decided to take him. He’s a small rack 5 pointer but big enough to kick my ass getting him to my truck. Good luck to everyone who’s still deer hunting.

  3. It continued to rain right up until I went to bed last night, and I woke up to about 3 inches of snow. That figures! It is exactly the way my entire season went this year. I spent many hours out there this season and it was the most uneventful I can remember. Other than the little spike I passed about three times, a small doe, a momma with her medium sized fawn, and what I believe was a nice buck who escaped being shot thanks to heavy rain, fog and low light making it impossible to get him in my scope, it was a deer desert for me this firearm season. I think I may be done for the year. If I have not been able to even get a deer within rifle range since bow season, I don't expect things to change and have me get within bow range, and I have almost zero confidence with my muzzle loader so I always restrict it's use of that to bow, or at the most shotgun range. One thing is certain. If I do not decide to sell my place by next year, I plan to totally brush hog every acre of field next year and return it to what it once was. Also, I may finally try to find myself a new hunting partner. Since my Uncle who had been my hunting partner since around 1976 when he returned to the area after he had retired from the Army passed a few years ago, it just has not been the same for me. I still get out there and hammer it pretty hard, but it feels like just going through the motions. Good luck to those out there today in the snow.

  5. Went out yesterday at zero dark thirty with my oldest son and grandson . I was in a double stand at the Northwest part of the woods by 6:15 . Sat back and relaxed . It was overcast most of the morning . Wasn't seeing anything . It was real quiet . Matt said he was getting down at 11 and would walk back on the opposite side of the woods to see if he could kick anything my way . A few minutes later I saw two bucks and a doe in the woods between our stands and North of us . I was waiting for one of them to get in an open spot when all of a sudden they took off . Apparently they spotted or heard Matt getting up in a stand on the horse trail . They hauled butt through the middle of the woods and disappeared into the thickets . So , I failed to get a shot during gun season . Bummer !

  6. Not yet. Sometimes it takes 48 hours. Lots of candles, bottled water and stove being used a lot. It's an electric co-op and they quit when it gets dark.

  7. I could see where "adding" a section to make it taller might possibly be a problem .

  8. Our tree is up and decorated, 99% of the gifts have been purchased, the 23rd is the big baking day (not that I am a part of it) and as far as I know we don't have any other plans for this weekend so I'm hoping to be out all weekend and at least fill one tag.

  9. We remove a section of the 15 footers, and relocated the brace to a middle location. These newer, narrow ladder stands, not so sure. Safest coarse of action would be to contact the manufacturer of the stand. Safety first, is no accident.

  10. You guys remember that video of the buck with its whole upper back and shoulder laid wide open? Somebody posted it on here a year or 2 ago and I heard it on internet recently, too. As he walked, you could see minute detail of the muscles and bones in his upper shoulder moving; wonder how long he lasted....

  11. We've all experience tough seasons. It part of deer hunting. Maybe deer food sources are the answer. Sounds like you have the soils to till, plant what others haven't. It does help, Late season included .

  12. I guess IF it doesn’t get infected he could survive … I figured he was either dead from the injury or someone shot him But he’s still here

  13. Wow that is amazing. Keep on with the trail camera picts. But could that wound ever heal? Looks just too wide I don't know. That 10 pt I shot had lost the back hoof. Just bone packed with dirt. He was out with a doe at 4:00. Survival and reproductive instincts.

  14. Got out at 3pm to my deep stand. No wind very overcast felt like something was going to happen. Didn't see a deer. Heard two shots last half hour. That does it. Muzzy will come out tomorrow. Depending on the amount of meat I get back from that Ten point will seal the deal if I shoot a doe. Good luck fellas.

  15. Generally, all hunting accidents involving firearms or bows are investigated by DEC. Periodically, (I believe at the end of the year or lscense year) they are put out as a report and there usually a press release. ECO's and the hunter education folk are involved. I think I remember tree stand accidents are also being tallied.

  16. Rain stopped temperatures falling, and the bucks moved just after sunrise . I passed on the 7 pointer, I found the sheds from at the beginning of this thread. I know, a lot of you would have shot but, I would have to buy another freezer. Another smaller buck came out right behind him. Nice to see this late in the game.

  17. I went to Geneseo to give it another try . I sat in what my son calls the tunnel stand . There is an 8 foot wide cut we made through the middle of the thickets that looks like a tunnel . It's about 150 yards long . I was in the stand by 12:30 . My oldest son got out of work early and arrived around 2 pm and sat in a stand about 1/2 mile away . I had the wind in my face and the sun in my eyes for a while and didn't see anything . Around 4:15 Matt walked down through the field and into the west side of the woods . He kicked a small doe my way but she was to quick and ran through some thick crap . On our way up the Laneway in the dark , we had a couple fawns running ahead of us . My youngest son said he would go with me Saturday if I wanted to go out . It looks like rain a good part of the day so I think I will pass unless the weather has a big change .
