  1. This morning we got out again. Our friend Danny came along with his girlfriend Nicole. Danny had shot his first deer hunting with us on the second day of gun season this year. Early on 4 ducks came in and we bagged 3 of them. The goose hunting was slow with many high flying migrators going over us. We had to leave at 11:30 and at 11:15 we called in a big single goose. Nicole had never shot a goose and we decided that she would get the first shots. Nicole slammed the bird with her first shot. We were all so proud and so happy for her. That makes 2 firsts for the couple hunting with us this year. And of course my lab Waylon made a great retrieve.

  2. See this is why I love where I hunt. My neighbor just called and said let's hunt together on my property tomorrow. He has about 250 acres not heavy hunted. Just the two of us walking around stirring things up. The guys behind me who own 400 acres are done. They told me have at it if you want. Good people who know how to treat each other. As you know we shoot quality deer from my place but its nice to know you have options!

  6. I try like heck to knock them down in the woods enough that they don't get to the goldenrod. It is a nightmare to find them when they do without snow. They can be a couple feet in front of you and still not be seen.

  7. Went out for my usual walk. Wind was perfect and had a Doe across a field I was able to sneak up on. Turned out to be a button so I didn't shoot. Sat at the corn for an hour saw nothing. Tomorrow morning I'll go to one of my favorite stands. Hope it produces but who the heck knows what they are doing this late in season. Oh I did find more rubs and scrapes. Crazy!

  8. I’m thinking they bed in the goldenrod and if I brushog off a big area and plant clover , that may be my food plot

  10. Hunted until 11 saw nothing. Again saw some new rubs and opened scrapes. Tonight I'll sit in my favorite stand until dark.

  11. I like to put my stands in corners, brushy travel corridors, and pinch points. I also try to position my stands so I''m shooting into my property, and far enough into my property that any final bolt a deer might make after being shot has it die or bed down on my land. If you have good neighbors it might be a different set of factors for you. If you are good with neighbors I would have a stand at the lower blue line in the strip between the triangle wooded area pointing down and the square located in the upper that is outlined in red. If not good with the neighbors, I would have a stand in the pinch point between the same square and the white spot (Fo) that are all outlined in red.

  15. Possible answers to the above question: Those in charge of such things are eager to find alternatives to hunting....Any alternatives. The inclusion and proliferation of coyotes, or any predator provides assistance in that goal of not relying on hunting so much for animal population control. It helps anti-hunter forces. You have to wonder if even the DEC isn't starting to be concerned over the inability of hunters to control deer populations as our numbers and our intensity fades year after year. So those things that would cut coyote numbers may be seen as counter-productive to future population control of the growing deer population problem. Just some random thoughts and possibilities regarding Grouse's question of why coyotes seem to enjoy a special protected status among all wildlife.

  16. Heavy drizzle mixed with snow. Northwest breeze blows a mist through the covered stand. Very wet out here. No deer yet, no shots around, but the fox are out.
