  1. Always loved them growing up. My dad had a 700 BDL back in the day in 300 Win Mag. He was so proud of it. He bought in 1988. He only hunted with it once. They were a different company then.
  2. That's not true at all. There's lots of other great rifles. I don;t drink the Remington Kool-aid. Remington has cheaped out on their stocks beyound belief. They have potential trigger issues that have come to light in two longtime models including the 700.Their customer service has become a horror show. I used to have an R25 that had headspacing issues. I was getting blwn primers and brass flow. Their initial response to me was "try different ammo." Imagine how bad that could have been had I not insisted that they service the rifle. The company was once great but after they created the Freedom Group and are now being ran by a NYC Hedge Fund called Cerebus they have changed how they operate quite a bit. The only reason why I would ever buy a 700 would be to send it to a custom shop. The Action and barrels are solid in that regard. In fact my only 700 is at Red Hawk Rifles right now being customized.
  3. Haha, my bad for disputing its merits. Still go with the TC Encore. I love mine. If you want a bolt action either an high end 700, or an X-bolt, last choice a Vanguard S2 Range Certified. All things being equal. The TC Encore Prohunter has my vote.
  4. Encore Prohunter all the way. The 243 Win for deer has been blogged to death. Put a well constructed 243 bullet into a whitetails boiler room and you're eating backstraps. Put a crappy shot on him and you're in a hot mess. IMO the same is true if you're using a 270 or 30-06. Hit one in the hinds, paunch or the Texas Heart and you'll be out looking for sure. There's been a lot of BS back and forth about no exit wound and poor blood trails. I've seen hunters miss 30 cal blood trails as well. Back to your question, in a single shot you're goona have to wait for the right shot so I think you'll be less inclined to take a marginal one. With a good bullet you're gonna be aces on this. I hand load and I was talking to the guys at Sierra Bullets about the 243 Gameking 100's. A couple of them use them for Mule Deer and Black Bear in Idaho and Missouri. One hog hunts in Texas and dropped a 440 pound boar with a 243 Win and a Gameking 100. He said the boar took two steps and face planted. Neither of them ever took more than one shot. They are used far across Europe for Red Stag which run about 400 or 500 pounds. Its a wonder round. Good velocity and the right sectional density does it everytime. If you don't handload invest in a quality commercial round. Federal Premium has a commercial loading with the 100 gr Sierra Gameking. Remington makes a 90 gr Swift Sirocco Bonded. Either of those and a set of cross hairs on lungs and heart and you're gonna be in fat city. But back to your original question, the TC Encore is the way to go.
  5. Its all in your head. Shoot no pins into white paper at 10 yds. Focus on using big mucles (back and shoulders). Then put a sot on the page (not a target, like an orange dot) a couple of days later and shoot that spot at 10 yds with no pins. After a while set a 10 yard pin only and work back from there. You might even want to close your eyes while drawing and anchoring. A kisser button came in real handy for this and now I won't shoot without one. It will take a week or so of shooting daily but you will overcome. I had it a while back and that cure worked for me.
  6. Easy tracking job. Great video, great shot. Looked like a Bear Anarchy bow?
  7. Wow, I shoudn't drink and post.
  8. Grizz1219, I hear that 43 and busting my A$$ way more then when I was 33!. Cardio and weights 4 days a week and staying away from the crap food. I need to loose 15 pounds to make 190. I'm 6'. Been at it hard for about a month now.
  9. We were there until 10:00 last night. Not the biggest wildlands fire I've seen, but big enough. We were able to contained South of 25 starting on the northern boarder of the lab, and east of the William Floyd Pkwy. hey are sending more crews out there now.
  10. Any new info on boars in NY. The Cortland area was full of them a bunch of years back.
  11. Its crappy. I've been there. Time will help take the edge off it. Maybe circumstances will improve after a while.
  12. Looks like a 33.5 grs of Varget with the 100 gr Gameking is the winner. Shoots .33 at 100 yds out of my TC Encore using a Bergara Barrel.
  13. My buddy went to Maine a two years ago. He anchored his moose with a 300 Barnes Expander in 150 grs of 777. He said the bull was 45 yards away the round entered just behind its shoulder and a little hight. The mosse went about 100 yards across a bogg and piled up on the distant bank.
  14. fasteddie, love the signature. The newbie to ML'ing (Dom) ought to get a TC in-line. They are simple to use, easy to clean and with a twist of the breach easy to get the powder out. I have a Triumph and its accuracy is amazing. Keep it simple to start. Get yourself a box of 777 pellets and any old 50 cal sabot 250 gr bullet. Zero it in with that and you'll be eating veniosn all winter long. In fact I only shoot 2 pellets (100 gr charge) . With a 250 gr bullet its more than enough for deer hunting. I've been using a smoke pole since I was 17 and that's a considerable span of years. The new TC's are so close to fixed cartridge rifles it ain't funny. I'll be front stuffer hunting in Kent County Michigan this coming year with some great friends. The TC Triumph will be making trip.
  15. Looks nice I have the Apex Bone Collector myself. Good luck with it.
  16. Folks are correct make sure you lower platform is strapped to the hand climber. Also get a great 5 point harness if you don't have one yet. The Tree Spider is really nice and light. Lastly, set the height so you are at the bottom of the canopy or you might get sky lighted depending on the topography of your stand. I have 25 years of experience using climbers. They're biggest downside is the weight. If you can leave in place for the bow season do so. I'd remove whatever squirrels will nibble on, like padded seats and back rests.
  17. Thanks BA. Sometimes I think I should eave well enough alone and keep with the Whisker Biscuit.
  18. Awesome post. I will be using that.
  19. Its really cool to see. I had one land a fish four feet in front of me once. I was setting some crab traps for black fish bait and out of nowhere this hawk comes down from the other side of the salt marsh. I got two years off my life and he got lunch!!!!
  20. Anyone have experiece wit the Reolution Rest? I was thinking replacing a Whisker Bisquet.
  21. Grouse and Bubba thanks. This helps a lot especially that I am using a single shot TC Encore. The first shot is the ONLY shot!!!!!
