Consider this: 2-3 miies is really nothing for a big buck to travel looking for doe. I understand your point of view but those unusual bucks might have been kicked out by a more dominant or bad tempered buck if you can believe that. Sometimes just down the road has better deer due to agriculture or urban landscape and again soil is usually the reason. The other issue is some genes are passed on by the doe. You could see a similar rack with no brow tines from all her offspring as a trait. Or all the doe in the area could have a no brow tine as a trait. Then the buck from 3 miles down the road comes to bread them and his brows are over 8 inches. Yet her offspring still have no brow tines. Until 2 more generations are breed with the bucks down the road. Maybe? Or the doe with the trait is remove? One thing is for sure good soil with good nutrition equals healthy deer. Large forest do not usually provide the food deer need to thrive. As a hunter of public land you are right on the money for the most part. Large heavy canopy woods are poor deer habitat. The rack deformities I believe are from poor food quality and abundance plus genes will dictate shape unless injured. No brow tines is a quality in a specific area and I would believe it is from the doe if consistently seen. Just a theory...

The point was that hunters believed different genetic are why some parts of the study area had small deer with small antlers and others where larger with good antlers and others where big and heavy deer with large thick and extra points on the antlers. Theory was the Mississippi bucks where genetically superior because the deer had traveled from up north along the river and that was why they where bigger. This study had enough deer to show that genetics has nothing to do with size of rack or weight to a degree. All the bucks captured had very large racks and equal weight by the 3rd generation. This is where as nyantler stated genetic would determine size and shape of rack. This knowledge is why we have so many who cultivate the land. If you can grow enough food with enough nutrition in it, well simply stated you will have a thriving environment with very healthy animals. Something most non-hunters that have never seen this first hand would never understand how much labor is involved with 95% of the benefit going to the animals. Probably where the term labor of love was invented.

Introduced in 1995 ok so that's 20 years. And they are affecting rivers, I think he is reaching a bit on that one. If no predators are in an area and ruminate type animals are present they can decimate the landscape, any predator will help with this issue that can kill them. Sounds like he has an agenda, perhaps to relocate more wolves and then ban hunting of them. Cool video.

This regulation does not affect me and seems to be a relatively small area. That said this SUCKS!!! We really need to do something about this unless you have no problem with this becoming state wide in ANY overpopulated area's from the DEC's point of view. (Except Northern zone.) I keep hearing agenda and the DEC has a plan. Well you say they will add in ML I say they will start to implement snipers. How is that for an agenda. "Look we "DEC" tried to control the population by making 2 weeks for doe only during bow and it just does not work, so now we will try this! Snipers, ML during bow, Crossbow during bow, earn a buck, etc." 10 years from now the regulations will look like this. Southern zone DOE ONLY October 1st until opening of gun and the last 2 weeks of the season. (Any weapon except a gun during bow season.) Earn a buck regulations are in effect state wide, IF YOU WANT TO SHOOT A BUCK YOU HAVE TO SHOOT 3 DOE to get a tag! Then you can shoot bucks during any season. OR Stay in your house tonight, the DEC snipers are culling. One thing is for sure, this new implementation will have NO EFFECT on population control. But the DEC knows this already, hence the agenda sounds brick solid. Wonder how bad this will get in the next few years and what the real agenda is.

So you say deer is your number 1...

8 Points and a challenge! Doe are only for population control and food. -
Good soil equals good deer. Basically ths video states that if the deer has the best nutrition gained from great soil it can reach its maximum potential. The only way to get that potential in your area is to make the soil great. After a few generations of perfect soil your deer can reach the maximum wieght and antler size. How long can this take? Will you ever get the soil right? The biggest deer I know of are in Western NY farm country with the best soil in the state. Coincidence? Others are in the other farm country in Suffolk. The study is about genetics this is why deer from different regions where picked to show that genetics does not determine deer weight and rack size, food and environment (This includes soil.) is what will dictate how big his body and antlers will grow. Now I just need about 600-700 acres to plant food in and about another 3000 around it to "keep them in my area". And a winning lotto ticket! lol

LOL funny, I do it too! How many yards and is this a good shot with the bow?

Of course they are going to say seal and whale "hunting" to put those pictures in with the wolves. They will say anything to get popular opinion on their side. Shooting birds out of a box is not very ethical IMO. Not much different than a high fence hunt. But these places generate revenue for those areas. Ammo, gas, food and the actual hunt cost money and help the local economy. Again they will say anything to get people on their side and for the younger generation who are very impressionable this can easily get them on board. Add in a lion from some park in Africa and you will get even more on the other side. Hunting is a multibillion dollar industry, they can post any pictures or video it will not stop hunting. This guy is out in left field but many idiots will believe him. Bet he is a meat eater or was at one point, lol another hypocrite.

ICS Hunter Pro 8.1, I like the extra speed for target and I do not see much difference when shooting a heavier arrow in so far as penetration. Remember a faster arrow that is slightly lighter will get about the same penetration vs a slower heavier arrow. The extra weight on a arrow does not always mean better penetration due to the fact that it moves slower. I get about 8 inches of penetration with a 400 or a 340 and both are a pain to pull from foam targets. I know many will tell me I am wrong and a heavy arrow = better penetration but from the bow I shoot the difference is negligible and a faster arrow will reach the deer quicker to help w/string jump if possible! Mathews Helium 28.5 at 65 lbs maxed out. about 278fps.

That's funny! Sorry but thanks for the laugh! I needed that!

I shoot bow, and rifle and primarily go for deer. If you are interested I can meet you at one of our east end rifle ranges and go over the basics and introduce you to some weapons so you have an idea of what you want to use. Then we can go over DEC hunting spots on LI. I am familiar with some of them. If your interested in bow we can shoot at Suffolk Archers, depending on your draw length I might have some cheap options for you to start out with. One thing I would say you need to work on is shooting, it is the most under rated part of hunting. If you intend on trying out bow hunting; (I do recommend this type of hunting ESPECIALLY if you want to hunt close to home on LI.) You would need to get one soon to be able to hunt this year with it. It is not like a gun and requires more practice. (LI is primarily bow until January when they open shotgun.) I have been hunting since 1988 so I have some experience. I am available this Saturday if your interested in going to the range. Welcome aboard, great people with a wealth of information!

I would be grouchy to if I could not hunt much! That sucks First Light, I feel for you. Be careful about shooting to many doe. Often people hear some advice and take it to heart. Many clubs where told "You need to shoot more Doe!" They did and after a rough winter had very few deer left vs before they "Culled" the population. Carrying capacity that is key, does the deer in your area have enough food? Northern zone not so much unless near agriculture or towns or good food plots. I doubt many in the northern zone would have plots like in his video. This video was geared more towards areas with high population like western NY or even southern zone. In the Northern zone if you have a high population I would leave it, mother nature will fix any issues. If you want doe for food I would target them in the south vs northern area. When all is said and done you are the best judge of your grounds and can determine the best course of action.

No usually it is the same reaction from most who are not familiar with animals. It is us putting the "O MY how can this happen", and that is horrible that a bear kills to eat food. Only us humans should be able to do that! So regardless if it's a deer or a dog most home owners would call the DEC and say get ride of the bear that eating in my back yard. Sounds like a familiar post we just had on a bear trying to eat the deer in some guys back yard. All these people need to do is contact some hunters to correct the issue. If the bear becomes a menace and is always around looking for another free meal then safety is first and the DEC will kill it. Regardless the bear is not at fault here, the owner with no fence who lets the dogs roam the woods free to attack other animals is ok but just not when mine is killed. Funny how some can see things in a certain way, remember perspective.

This is only the tip of the iceberg, you should hear some of the other stuff they feed your kids about how bad hunting and hunters are. I have a hunting friend who teaches and the stuff that comes out of these peoples mouths is basically straight out of a PETA book. Most schools are basically anti hunter. So much for starting a youth hunting/fishing program in schools, they would petition against it. And you though they were teaching math and science. LOL

Trap it, kill it? The bear does not know it should not go after dogs, to him it's just another meal. Most dogs are able to out maneuver a bear, this one got caught when the owner distracted it. Sucks for the dog and I feel bad for the owner but it's just doing what a bear does. Granted if the bear keeps coming back looking for another dog I would want it killed but this is probably a one time incident but now the bear is on death row. Very sad for the dog, owner and soon to be dead bear. PS: If the dog was that close to the bear it was threatening it (Barking), I think the bear would claim self defense. Shame.

I use a Kershaw knife with a less than 3 inch blade and a larger one for a spare. Personally I always start at the bottom of the chest with the deer on his back, that prevents the guts from getting damaged. If anything you want the chest to be higher so the guts sink towards the back area. Scrape the chest cavity sides, wind pipe then the but. Because it is such a small blade you have less chance of damaging something you did not want to cut!

Love his lessons! Great guy, very knowledgeable.

Well they keep putting up fences where I hunt and call it "Forever Wild" a term I use to love until I actually found out what it meant. Many trees with little life. I for one am all for high fence hunting now. I just need the blue line fenced in and I will be all set. And yes I will spell it out, this means the ADK park blue line. Otherwise it just would not be the same. I have nothing against people doing fence hunts if that's what they want. But they will receive no credit. That is not hunting its target practice. As for the plague? You are all wrong and FSW is right, prepare for the zombie apocalypse!

I believe you had a great story to go with this? Do you have the link? And who did that wood it is spectacular!
