  1. I did good, we had alot of fun! I was laughing so hard at one point it kinda messed my shot up but it was all in good fun and I had a blast! How did you do ATbuckhunter? Some pics from the shoot. We had 6 of us shooting together with some nice groups.
  2. I have to agree that hard work and knowledge of your prey makes a huge difference, that said not all of us have extra time to spend scouting, shooting, setting up camera's, food plots, funnels and or research the subject of deer. Many of us are limited to state land and have no other access or the ability to leave family to "Scout for deer". Hell many are just happy to get away from home for a few days at all and hunt. We are talking about 2 levels of hunting plain and simple. Most of my friends simply do not have the time for any hunting other than the actual hunt. Family time takes priority. This is why sites like this are great for us who are addicted to whitetails to gather and fight with each other, lol. One thing is for sure, lady luck shines the more I prep regardless of how I hunt the great Whitetail Deer! Most of us addicts have found this out. But the lucky ones do not seem to listen lol. 2 more weeks and they will start to show up at the archery range for 20 or so shots and say "I am READY!"
  3. Simply put the state land I hunt has very few deer. Population control in these area's is not needed. Yet the area's that do need it are usually hard to get access to causing basically NO hunting in the area with high populations. As more hunters pound the state lands these deer find sanctuary in these residential areas. You want population control. This is what is needed. 1)Stop making us get signed waivers to hunt in residential areas. If the home owner allows us in we should not need to get permision from every other house in the area. 2)Stop preventing us from shooting MORE deer. It does not matter if they are a buck. Bucks cause as much damage if not more than doe. I understand they can not reproduce yet they can still cause car accidents, plant damage and are part of the population issue. 3)Get the earn a tag system back in place, give us more reasons to get into the woods by giving out extra buck tags for every 2-3 doe shot. This will get us hunters to participate more in culling the population and added incetive to take more doe. Otherwise keep experimenting and see the results of diminished hunters in the field.
  4. I use them in low light conditions. Arrow flight seems good, very little change.
  5. Should be a good time, we always have a good time! Nice way to test your ability and have fun with other shooters/hunters. Sounds good Bruno1, if you have no one to shoot with you are more than welcome to come with me. Anyone want to meet and greet or have a guild for the course just ask for me, Jeff Calderone. (We have a few Jeff's.)
  6. We have a 3D shoot tomorrow at Suffolk Archers. Come on down and sharpen your skills on 30 3D targets. Shoot starts at 9AM with registration and practice starting at 8AM. I will be their if anyone is interested. Lets have some fun and shoot some targets! ! ! I believe its 30$ for non members. If you can't make this one we have another the 13th of September. Come on down and shoot some foam targets! It's fun! Small breakfast and full lunch served.
  7. Savage 30-06 my first rifle. Still have yet to get a deer with it! My buddies Marlin 30-30 lever action I hope to get a deer with this special gun! And my Model 94 Winchester in 44 mag this is my prefered weapon as it is easy to fire, carry and I have taken all three of my deer up in the ADK with it.

    New To Region

Welcome aboard! Great site with great info. Only thing I would add to Eagle Riders post is Permathrine. This stuff works to keep the ticks off. They can have lyme disease so it is something you will want to use to protect yourself. We have a 3D shoot tomorrow at Suffolk archers, come on down and shoot if you want 8am Registration and practice, 9 am starts the shoot. 30$ to non members, if you can make it ask for Jeff Calderone and I will take you around the course and then go over some hunting spots on the Island. Otherwise the DEC site is has some good info on location to hunt.
  9. Hopefully your doe will draw in a roaming adult buck! Otherwise I would keep them!
  10. Booo BOOOO Talk about screwing up my plans. O well those last 4 days where really just to get into the woods and enjoy nature and possibly find some deer to chase during rifle. Now I have no excuse to keep my tags. Taking away another opportunity, what a shock.
  11. Ground blind also keeps your shooting the exact same way you have been practicing. Shooting from a stand you have to "brake" at the waist and bend the front knee to keep good form. Shooting from a stand is slightly different than from the ground but no different than shooting from a hill...
  12. Ground blinds can be created yourself. All you need to do is bring some brush that matches the area and basically make a fort with shooting lanes. You can chop some of the woods in the area (Private land only) to get limbs and branches to cover your area up. Then you only need a good seat. You can do this in many area's to play the wind and cost is very little, you can make them permanent and do not have to take them down. Wear gloves to keep scent to a minimum. Tree stand are great for viewing deer, your scent is higher. If you choose this route please be safe and use a safety harness and tether system, especially if you are solo. If you get a stand, set up a target under it at different ranges to get use to shooting down. If you can afford a tree stand they have many advantages over a blind. But blinds can be made for free and you really only need a seat and can set up a few area's with very little cost. I would do the blinds first.
  13. I was wondering the same thing as I have notice the acorns are dropping on LI like mad. I am always interested in how that is going. I know on LI conditions are very dry. The 3 ponds at Suffolk Archers have been dry for over 3 months now.
  14. Two nice bucks, good luck with them!

    Antler Pens

That is very cool! Nice work!
  16. Simply put all the deer I shot and did not recover where all from user error. If I would have put the arrow or bullet in the right spot it would have worked. . Funny how I have missed easy shots with the bow and high powered 30-06, 308 and 30-30 yet for some reason the 44 Mag has yet to miss. Funny how I can easily put quarter sized holes with guns and shoot very well with the bow yet still manage to mess up shots. Another reason we celebrate so much when everything actually does come together. I guess I am the opposite of using knock down power because the arrows and 44 mag are not exactly in the knock down power range. Many even consider the 30-30 underpowered yet with even a long bow most any game in NY can be taken. Shot placement is key.
  17. Cool video thanks for sharing. Nice heart shot!
  18. I was just commenting on perspective yesterday with a 2nd year hunter. I could litterally hunt for over 70 years and still not see the same things a new hunter sees his first time out. This is why I do not care if this was your first time hunting ever or your 70th year, I want to hear all about the adventures we take and what THAT person observed that day! Doc you hit the nail on the head, as usual. I like to use the Bruce Lee method to hunting. Take what is useful and disregard the rest. What might work for one person might not work for another. Taking what you like and making it your own to fit your hunting needs. Like disregarding the hunter who told me smoking does not affect deer yesterday and scent control is just a gimmick.
