  1. Good luck is always a blessing. Right place at the right time. Proper shot placement, due to practice. Wish I could scout more but it never seems to pan out... One thing I do notice is that the guys who spend more than 7-10 days hunting seem to be the exception and due to the time put in, well like Phade said they seem to create their own luck. Persistence, practice, in depth knowledge of my prey and it's anatomy help in a major way but I will take good luck over the bad luck any day!!!
  2. Sounds good! Well the ADK preseason hunt was canceled due to work, so much for using last years tags... Going to check out a lease in Columbia county by New Lebanon. Hoping to get my hunting partner of over 25 years his first deer... I will be pushing deer next weekend in the hopes of getting him a shot...
  3. Warning this has adult language! Shooting the top Half of Suffolk Archers warming up for bow season. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pyvuUqD2ZM&feature=em-upload_owner Middle of our course/ starting area, running deer shot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uh06uikZWxQ&feature=em-upload_owner Our field course and the south side its connect to. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRg7lbZqAKk&feature=em-upload_owner First video is edited to be steady with google edit, second two are in original format. Narrow angle 1080p GoPro Black. Wish the target was in better view at 30 plus yards... I was shooting OK that day but not concentrating on the closer shots... Like the camera just wish it was a little better at low light and long distance and battery life, remote is nice to turn it on but drains the battery more. Head mount works well if you wear a hat, mounting accessories offer many options. Waterproof enclosure makes sound null but ensures long life in harsh hunting conditions. Overall good camera with nice features.
  4. I don't agree. After seeing personally affects of barometric press, storm fronts, harsh weather and high temps, I believe these are factors that play I big roll in movement. This is the quote. "Regardless of weather, bucks move most at dawn and dusk. With the exception of one study from South Texas in the summer, numerous studies from Texas to Maryland suggest that weather has little or no influence on mature buck movements." While I agree most activity happens at dawn and dusk I can not believe weather has no factor in big buck movement. This study sounds out of our region, our climate and harsh weather have much larger effects on a deer's survival and the study I refer to have been done in our region. The study in these regions do not have the same issues with snow, extreme cold, and long winters, simply put survival is not dependent on weather so deer do not have to pay as much attention for their survival as the ones up north. I think that is a big factor. Again this is just what I feel effects deer, some more than others and just like people, no two deer are alike... Temperature, High Winds, Storm front/Barometric presser, hunting presser, predators, rut, Sun/moon rise and set, food and safety. Rut or weather conditions or predictions don't change any of my hunting, the only thing that has taken me out of the woods in 25 plus years was one 70 degree day, it was just too hot... Hunting stormy weather is some of the most enjoyable thing for me regardless of weather pattern predictions. Plain and simple after some time every deer has to move for food to survive so I will spend as much time in the woods no matter what the rut or weather is doing... Fun subject to debate.
  5. Sorry, I was going by Charles Alsheimer and Wayne Laroche predictions. It's just a prediction but I agree with the logic. I though this was seen as fact but many factors come into play. Does not make much difference, deer will still move and I will hunt as often as possible. Rut predictions do not dictate any plans but I like the knowledge... http://charliealsheimer.com/ca/articles/touched.html
  6. Savage model 110 bold action, Bushnell 3-9 : 40mm, 30-06 w/federal 165 grain sierra bow tail was my main gun for a long time. I have been using my Winchester model 94 AE in 44 Mag for about 14-15 years as my main gun 240 grain-300 grain open sights. Old school this year with a 30-30 topped off with a Leupold 2-7 :30MM testing ammo...
  7. "We don't shoot anything smaller than a 8 point, I would not have shot that deer." If you hear this said to any successful hunter, that person is a jerk. Just because some have "standards" they use to judge what is worthy of shooting does not mean we all have to follow or agree. The watering down of hunting through TV is a travesty. While personally I consider myself a trophy hunter, I still slap the back of EVERY successful hunter I meet no mater what they take. I am always interested in any hunting story, I do not care if this was a first hunt ever for that person or they have been doing it for 50+ years. (They all have a story to tell and something for us all to learn...) The other thing I have learned over the years is you do not have to take a big buck to be a great hunter or be knowledgeable about how to hunt... You do not have to take one every year to prove you can hunt... Plus I am feed up with scores... The only score I need is points and weight... 8 pt 207 lbs is the only score needed Buck 0 Me 1... The score so far is Jeff 2, ADK bucks 3. I wish it was Jeff 5, ADK bucks 0 but then I would not have the drive that got me the brute in 2010... Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and my 2 ADK bucks on my wall are the 2 most memorable times in my life and 2 of the best looking things in my house... Enjoy your time in the woods and your prey that survives our harsh environment just like our short lives they are gifts to cherish no matter how big or small!!! This will be the first year I will actively target doe on LI, see if I can actually pull the trigger on one this year... With my luck this will be the first year I do not have any shot on one... Arg... Contemplating lowering my standards for the ADK as sightings are so rare where I hunt... Wonder if I will ever shake the big buck attraction? Probably not... Hope to capture the ones I let go with the GoPro...
  8. Can't wait, heading up on Thursday for four days of bliss in deep woods!!! Look out ADK bucks I am looking for you!!! Looks like I wont have to deal with 4 straight days of rain like last year! I love bad weather but with out the wall tent and wood burning stove it is hard to dry out! Going to recharge my batteries after a rough year and hopefully I will finally get one nice buck in my sights with the bow. Extremely happy I am physically able to bow hunt this year just hope if I am successful I am able to get my prey out of the woods by myself!!! ADK Sep 26th-30th LI bow October to November, Back to the ADK for almost the entire month of November 6th - Dec 7th(One week back to work.) and 3 weeks in December to hunt LI... To say I will be putting in some time hunting this year would be an understatement!!! Just hope work does not screw things up!!! Or another Hurricane...
  9. Agree I feel they should allow more doe permits in area's with these restrictions so meat eaters can eat... Kids excluded. I don't like more regulations but regulations are what dictate herd control. With out them states like Pennsylvania would still have no deer... Now many are liking the beautiful racked deer that are a direct results of this type of management. One thing I do not like is the fact that it will deter some unsuccessful hunters but new hunters (first year) should have any options available to keep them interested including youth hunters. But this is coming from a trophy hunter... If I was strictly a meat hunter I would object to ANY regulation that would stop me like 3 inches on one side, one buck and one doe bow, one buck for rifle, baiting, spotlighting, shooting next to my neighbors house, hunting at night, having a loaded gun in my vehicle, etc...
  10. Not to mention all the camera's that are run by private firms. How much is too much? What will you say when they want to put one outside of your house...
  11. Nice looks like an adult. Good luck with that one!!!
  12. 1) I doubt you will get in trouble for target shooting regardless of season if targets are present and safety is followed but I would e-mail to be safe. 2)You are correct, during rifle season you can carry any LEGAL weapon as long as you have the license for it, EX: You need a bow hunting license to use a bow during rifle season and use the rifle tag even if taken with a bow... As I understand it you need a bow license to hunt anything that is legal with a bow... 3)Seems like the same question. But yes you can carry both as long as you have both a bow and big game license and only during rifle season. It is illegal to bow hunt with a fire arm of any type in your possession during bow season and you may not hunt with or be accompanied by a person hunting with a fire arm. EX: While I am bow hunting deer by buddy can not push for me with a rifle while hunting bear during bow season and early bear season... But during rifle season I can be next to my friend with a bow and his gun and I can have a legal hunting side arm during rifle season while using a bow... These are big game regulations. This is how I was informed it worked but It could have changed, pretty sure this still applies.
  13. First thing about something like this is getting to know who will be involved and what are the goals. I have been bow hunting since 2001 and deer hunting since 1988. Safety, respect for my prey, nature and fellow hunters are some of the things I value highly. I hunted LI for the first time last year and loved seeing so many deer, sign, tracks etc. It was delightful enjoyable and close to home! Hunting ADK bucks is my passion but I have come to realize I just love deer hunting and wonder if I will ever get enough. I shot so much small game as a kid with a pellet gun it lost its appeal but predator hunting is something that interests me with my bow. If your interested I can take you on a tour of Suffolk archers and we can shoot the course. It's a great club just like this forum with some grumpy old men just like on here lol. Shooting at one of the rifle ranges is another way I like to see how people treat fire arms before I enter the woods to hunt with them. Perhaps we can do some shooting together and take if from their. I hunt LI with one other bow hunter at times. Roscoe, Prattsville, Cooperstown, Indian Lake, Long Lake, Newcomb, Tupper Lake, Lake Placid Trail, Port Jervis, Deposit and some western counties are some of the area I have hunted but Moose River has been my passion. If your interested in a deep woods ADK deer hunting experience or exploring LI for deer send me a PM. My NFA club seems to be getting smaller, not that it was ever suppose to be large 9 was the max at one time. Just a bunch of guys hunting out of a wall tent in deep woods, great times! NFA= No Fooling Around a reference to David Boomhower who was found opening weekend I believe in 1991 and being prepared for what can go wrong and having confidence in your navigation skills as this was before GPS... Our site is out of date as I am waiting for more pictures from one of the hunters.(He was the only one with me for 4 of 12 days last year due to Hurricane Sandy) But here it is. http://adkdeerhunting.wordpress.com/
  14. Some of those answers are questionable. 1: While studies show deer reaction in mock scraps that is not the same as doing it out of your stand IMO... And yes I bet if you do it on a deer while in the stand they will be scared away, lol. Human pee and scent left in a area is a red flag for deer but if you do it in a mock scrape with other scents it is deceptive IMO... I choose Yes Because they talk about doing it out of a stand then justify it with a mock scrape test which are two different things. I know people out east that use pee to keep deer off their property and swear by it!!! This is one "fact" I do not entirely believe... 2: While one print alone might not be a definitive answer larger bucks tend to have dew claws show and the width or stance and stride plus shoulder width and what they move through all point to weather or not it is a buck or doe plus bucks tend to strut and swagger. Harder to tell when they are similar size but a good tracker can do it with no problem and be accurate most of the time. I can do it pretty well and I am by no means an advanced tracker... I picked C: Sometimes I can identify the differences and I do see many bucks travel solo and all I have tracked and found where bucks. I know bucks trail doe and doe can have larger deep prints but subtle differences while tracking usually reveal the gender. Again this is a general question and I understand why I am wrong I just don't agree 100%... I got 3 wrong and should have known when they said STAY bedded... Eventually they will move but windy days are known for shutting down deer activity. I have and Issue with question 8. Studies have shown that deer go into lock down shortly after full moon and is a big factor in determining the rut. That phase of tending a doe is known as lock down time and can be tough hunting due to bucks sticking to hot does. Activity is virtually shut down for a few days during peek breading time. To say the moon phase has no effect on movement is just plain wrong IMO... It has everything to do with it!!! Seeking just before lock down time is some of the hottest action you can find. I had no choice but to choose A even though I did not like the second part of the answer. "A. True. Studies have revealed that moon phase has a big impact on deer activity. During a full moon, does are less receptive to bucks, so bucks move less. B. False. Deer movement studies have shown only marginal impact from the full moon. Feedback:You got it. Even during the full moon, deer are still crepuscular, which means they move mostly at dawn and dusk. However, during the full moon, studies have shown a slight elevation in movement rates during the middle of the day, and also an earlier start of the peak evening movement period. If you’re hunting in the afternoon during a full moon, head to the woods as early as possible. " It seems to me that deer tend to use the moon light and then need to replenish after a long night and this accounts for the extra movement during the day. Again I understand why this was wrong but I could not agree with deer movement is only marginally changed during full moon phase unless they are talking about October and not November... November moon phase kicks off the rut and has everything to do with it and extra activity just before it during the seeking phase, and lock down shortly after during peek breeding time. But I understand the word marginal is the key in this question, but I still disagree. What do you think? Am I off base here???
  15. Can't wait after 5 days in the ADK I get to start hunting LI! Weekend warriors look out! LI bucks can get big!
  16. The results of a dead deer are the same but the ethics and sportsman part of it are taken out, plain and simple... We are called sportsman for a reason. That is because in its extreme we still hunt them on the ground with the most primitive weapon allowed, the traditional bow and as sportsman we choose to let many(or some) go waiting for that perfect buck. On the opposite end we could be in a tree stand with a rifle that can reach out to over 300+ yards looking for meat... The same ethic of good shooting, proper shot placement, range and most importantly knowledge of our prey, apply to both aspects of the sport and those who follow that code know the extreme difference of a fence hunt compared to basically any other hunt is just not comparable... As ethical sportsman fence hunts will never compare to the real thing and true sportsman pity those who have to pay for a trophy. As a passionate deep woods hunter I can not fathom doing this, funny thing is many new hunters feel the same way as they start the amazing journey of hunting. Does not matter if you are 5 miles back still hunting deep woods or in town hunting the hot spot up in a tree, both are hunting free roaming animals that are adept at surviving winters, parasites, disease, predators and hunters and that type of hunting will beat any fenced hunting trophy no matter how big the animal is!!! Yes my friends be proud of your accomplishments and knowledge gained when hunting it might not always put a trophy on your wall but it will put a notch in your belt of experience and that is the fun part of the journey. Another thing high fence hunters will never know... The journey is the best part!!! Now if they made these hunts specifically for handicap and wounded warriors it might get more approval from hunters but they are usually for profit and out of reach for these people. We pay for our deer with knowledge, experience and skills vs money and that is why they will never compare... If you can't tell by now I really do not like fenced deer hunting and breeding for rack size...
  17. Good luck next time!!! I need to get a range finder!
  18. Handgun while bow hunting, that is a big game reference and does not pertain to small game hunting as I know it... However that would be up to the officer checking the person with the bow out I believe. Otherwise YES we would be calling him out. Like you said Catskill hunter we all do SOMETHING at one point that was illegal yet most of us try our best to follow the regulations as we understand them. Many times those illegal activities are by accident. Most ethical hunters follow the regulations to the best of their ability, we all know that illegal activity can be rampant in some area's and that can really spool our time in the woods. Seeing someone post an illegal activity will always get a negative response, no one is calling for a hanging so your fine... Be ethical, responsible to your game and true to yourself and the sport. If seeing game is what you want plant some nice food in front of the window for perfect viewing, it will work better and be legal. Bushes and dare I say apple trees are great. Don't worry about the negativity, join in the conversation and enjoy the site... We are ethical, responsible and have the highest respect for our game, sometime we go overboard to protect them this includes internet forums especially. Good topic, glade it was clean, let all move on because HUNTING season is soooo close!!! Now does anyone know where I can get 2 - 50lbs bags of corn and apples for my ADK hunt? LOL Sorry just figured I would try to get a laugh...
  19. Nice pics! Some really nice deer.
