Set up another one with a hidden trail cam or 2... That sucks.

Ok today I am going to EAT before I shoot and see how well I do. I like to practice while stressed out and not stressed out to see how well I do under both conditions. For when I finally climb these peaks in the ADK I am sometimes stressed and need to know my limits... I shoot much better when I can focus on form but sometimes feet position affects my accuracy... I find shooting uphill harder to maintain accuracy than shooting downhill... And shooting from a kneeling position is one of my best ways of holding steady.

Interesting. I tend to not be a morning person. But I love nothing more than watching the woods wake up and the sun warming me up like so may of us do. I tend to still hunt with about a quarter mile to a few miles of hiking to get to my still hunting area's. By the time lunch time comes I am usually a few miles back so heading out for lunch is not an option for me. While still hunting I try to look for signs, if good enough sign is found, I go in about a hour before first light to see if I can ambush. No movement by 9-10 am gets me moving again... With such few days available to hunt, I spend every minute I can in the woods. Sitting at camp is just not as fun as hunting... Both my ADK bucks where taken at 10 am and noon. I have had my best ambushes at first light after tracking the day before usually patterning a doe heard with a buck in chase or from tracking the buck. Usually I am in the woods from 10 am or earlier to dark. The better sign I find the earlier I get into the woods... Just finding sign gets my adrenaline pumping as the deer can be so few... Only one mature buck track spotted all last year in snow, arg I should hunt other spots but I am on a mission!!! Can't wait to scout/hunt Moose River September 27th!!! Going to see if that big buck is still around!!! If he made it he will be a sight to see!!!

Shoot that thing, before it gets to the children! I would not want that breeding... JMO I was wondering if it was female...

Typical... I know a few that practice when they get up to there cabin. I had one guy who was not able to hit a deer target at 15 yards... I shot bad today, going to try and work on form again tomorrow. Then retest my 70 yard pin... After cleaning the gutters my shoulders are sore, see how I feel... My muscle memory is good just need to keep my peep perfect and bow level when I release. Hard to keep good form when I am tired so I am shooting less arrows and concentrating on form more. I have one guy who only bench shoots his gun, never free hand... Some will never learn. For others their is hope...

Way to young!!! lol Sorry I had to say it! Nice one, in 2 weeks and one day if I see him in deep woods ahhh yea IM SHOOTING! Looks like a perfect 1st buck with the bow!

Closest miss was at about 7 ft called in at first light, should have just taken him at 50 yards but he was coming straight for me so I was in no rush, just did not remember to compensate for such a close target when sighted in at 50... I placed the gun on a rock, I was crouched in boulders, and let the buck walk into the sight and held perfect. You can imagine my shock when the buck ran a 180 around me and was now about 5 ft away. Well I tried to pull up on him and finish him but he had other ideas and ran off! The small trail and spot that he rested proved it was a graze and he ended up back tracking and then headed up a ridge where I lost him. ARG!!! That was upsetting to say the least after tracking him the day before and setting up a ambush and calling him into me the next morning, well everything was perfect except for my shot... ARG!!!! And so the saga continues...

I think you are late... Takes a long time to get good with a bow. So many to choose from... Just don't be concerned with speed or heavy draw weight. Get a bow you can hold back comfortably for at least 2 min, feels good in your hand and is easy to draw. A good archery store should be able to get your draw length and set you up in that price range or a little more. (Test shoot a few bows before buying VIP!) Try not to take long shots when you first start and try to shoot them broadside or facing away from you(Quartering away), the target area is much better then facing you with a bow(Quartering to). Practice in the tree stand shooting and bend at the leg and waist to keep proper form and alignment. ALWAYS have your self attached to the safety harness, do not compromise on safety with the stand! Good luck and start practicing now!!! Remember to only take shots you can kill your prey with, being ethical to your prey they deserve that much... EX: No shots beyond your kill zone limit... Try to keep your shots under 30 yards... Good luck again and I hope you get a MONSTER!

Welcome aboard! Good luck this season!

Looks like a healthy 2 1/2 to me. But perspective is everything... Hard to tell with this walking picture. Take him so we can find out! 3.5 would not surprise me. Different food and genes in areas equal a variety of antlers. Could be older, long nose and appearance give that impression... More pics!!! Please!

Bear attack?

Last year bow hunting, last day Dec 31st. Stalking a trail I see a deer about 200 yards away and approach. At about 40 yards I see its a fawn and give it a pass as it runs off. 300 yards down the trail I see a deer in the valley below me but it's in cover about 25 + yards. I give a fawn in distress call Ma Maamaa, MAAA. Well the deer in the valley did not budge but the 2 doe about 70 yards to my rear came in charging and busted me in my green and brown camo with just enough snow cover to make me stick out. ARG So I chased the 2 doe for about 2 min just because the busted me lol... Then I waited at the truck for an hour because my buddy says the GPS and the compass are both broke as his phone battery dies... ARG Good times!

July -September should be minimum shooting practice IMO. Shooting every other day will give enough time to get the motion down pat, along with good form the confidence building is what I count on. I will only shoot at distances I can hit the heart, that can range from 30 yards to about 60 + when my form is perfect. With the exception of a defective release I am replacing today, I never have an issue with releasing early. Just like shooting the gun the more you do it the more shooting becomes second hand and the other aspects of hunting can be focused on. EX: Proper breathing when the time to shoot is picked and figuring distance and pin placement for a perfect shot, this takes my mind off the deer and on the best shot. Once you determine that you will shoot concentrate on those steps, breathing and pin placement, don't worry about antlers or size, you will see that hopefully up close... I agree 100% with shooting at 3d vs paper. I never get target panic on 3D yet paper causes me to shoot left just before getting onto the bull. -
Very cool!!! Gives me new respect for a good taxidermy. I did not realize how much work was put into making the deer look good again... Then I remember some of the pictures and realize why this art is so vital to preserving our treasured prey... Praying I have to choose one again this year...
