I was thinking the knife would be cool but the surefire is a great gift, I love my E2D Led Defender. I have had it for many years and the batteries are expensive but last a long time. Truly awesome flashlight, use it 24/7/365. That is the type of required equipment to get out of the woods in heavy fog at night IMO.

Very cool!!! In "No Hunting" zones deer are great for observation! Especially so close to home!!! Nice! Like that post Woodsman20!!!

If someone takes the time and effort to plant and sustain a food plot, it will only benefit the deer population. The small amount of deer harvested is the rewards reaped... Is a food plot considered baiting, yes but no more than hunting the beechnuts, acorn or apple trees on a ridge in woods. Hunting over a food plot for deer in a tree stand is not the same as stalking the woods but using a scoped rifle that goes out to 300+ yards is just as equal with a traditional bow... To each his own I say. I love deep woods but to say I do not envy the farms and big racked deer they produce would be a lie. When a deer falls the results for the hunter are the same, does not matter if he is 30 ft up a tree with a scoped rifle or using a traditional bow stalking deep woods... Joy and excitement is usually the results for both when an animal is harvested! Granted a LI buck would not be the same as an ADK buck but I would be just as happy with a beauty on farm land or deep woods... Saying it is wrong to hunt a food plot is like saying hunting deer is wrong, it just does not work. Food plots, natural or man made, are essential in patterning deer and yes they do draw them in... Baiting as defined by the DEC is a large contributor to spreading disease, food plots do not cause this issue. I have no issues with food plots or people hunting them, they put in the time and effort on their land so they get the rewards plain and simple. Makes me wonder if the complainers are state land hunters? We get upset at some of the monsters taken off private land and need to vent, lol.

WOW!!! And I wonder why Western deer grow such nice antlers!!! Truly Awesome... What fun stalking on that farm must be!!! I bet rainbows end on this land, a true pot of grown gold!!! Epic and still growing, NICE!!! -
All about advertising and fan base like Wooly said. I am a big MMA fan. College football, racing and ted all have huge fan bases but I watch none of them. I did not get upset when Brock Lesnar advertised hunting products, I was shocked to see him stalk a deer though... It is plain and simple, big sponsors have big money and can get a larger fan base by sponsoring these types of events and people. The simple correlation is Fame and fan base. These people, games and races all have young males who follow them and idolize them. If they use and sponsor lost camo and a Mathews bow they will get their fan base to purchase the same things... Big money companies know this and exploit it and the celebrities get paid... Even though I am not into watching cars circle for hours or watching football or Ted. These things are as American as apple pie... Just because you do not watch them has nothing to do with you NOT being among them... You do not have to watch these things to be a red blooded American. Love your country, family, friends and help your neighbor as much as possible this is a red blooded American to me!

It probably fell in a small hole and was crying for mama. They can be pretty loud when they are stressed, awesome video thanks!

2 funny!!! I am happy I have enough Italian blood to grow a full one, and enough Danish and Swedish to keep my back free of hair!!! Not sure where the Polish fits in. (No wise cracks!!! LOL) Facial hair is frowned upon by work, yet one of my old bosses who use to complain had a full beard!!! So he did not have the right to tell me it was not acceptable, even though he tried... After fellow coworkers pointed that out he stopped. I usually grow one for rifle season yet recently I seem to start earlier. I have to trim otherwise I would look like grizzly Adams in 2 weeks. The gray hairs seem to be multiplying every year, might have to put on more war paint this year... Arg. I will start September 26th on the way up to scout/bow hunt and will not remove until after dec 8th if the gray does not bother me too much... And yes I agree no facial hair has ever gotten me a deer but the tradition is fun...

20-25 % sounds about right to me. 150 lbs deer was probably about 183-195 lbs walking weight depending on how healthy... A Fat young healthy deer could have 50 lbs of guts with food, an old worn out buck would have very little in (guts)weight at the end of the season I would think... Possibly only 35 lbs at that weight for a rut worn buck.

Looking for a backpack
NFA-ADK replied to Hunting3m's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
Many types of packs are available in a variety of material and price. Make sure it is quiet, good camo pattern and is large enough for what ever you will need at your coldest time hunting. (largest extra clothes) I hunt all day and by noon I am usually a half mile to a few miles deep so I bring lunch in a Tupperware container, snacks, soda, water, Gatorade, matches, lighters, neck warmer, warm hat, rain gear, sweatshirt and pants, socks, gloves, survival kit, knives, drag rope, GPS, emergency blanket, calls, flashlights and extra batteries, map and 2 compass, toilet paper and wipes... 2 way radio when im not solo water purifier when I am. If you do not hunt all day a fanny pack works great and extra pant and jacket pockets can hold much of your gear. IF you know the weather for the day much of the extra clothes can be lost. But up in the ADK I trust no weather person and always bring the extra clothes with the intension of it turning bad at any moment... Those clothes saved me many times or I would be going back to camp for lunch to "warm up" or end the day early. I try to dress light for the day so I don't sweat while stalking or hiking, when I find a nice area I tend to sit and post until dark and as we all know that last hour can be very cold compared to the day time. Sweat pants and shirt keep in extra body heat and the rain gear acts as a wind breaker, socks, head and neck warmer keep me warm enough to sit until I cant shoot, usually... I usually have my GPS, compass and 2 calls on a string around my neck. Doe bleeps in jacket pocket with camo bandanas and neck gaiter for noise suppression, extra ammo during rifle season in gloves, everything else is in the pack. I remove some of this if I am stand hunting private land or if hunting bow on LI. The extra clothes keeps everything in the pack quiet! Depending on how you hunt will dictate the best sized pack and what to put in it... Good luck. -
LOL Wooly! Early season is just to hot for both but I have used bandanas early season if temps allow it. I use some cover to hide my nose and eye area, ears and neck beard covers the rest. Otherwise many times I just go out and hunt, covering my face is not needed with a beard and camo hat! But that extra stuff is part of what makes hunting FUN!!! And being in FULL camo is pretty awesome!!! I like neck gaiters and a camo baseball hat and usually have many bandanas to keep all my pockets quiet or cover a cold spot. WOW the looks I got when I went into a gas station after 7 days of hunting! When I looked in the mirror I had to laugh. Full camo face paint with a scratch across my nose from a tree branch the day before. I looked scary!!!

In so far as taking longer shots that would not help with string jump. Sound is still traveling faster to the deer than our arrows... I really think more hunters should practice and shoot more and aim for the heart. At 30 yards with any new compound you are going to at least nail a double lung aiming at the center of the heart. (Level ground shot, prey not aware.) Shooting from a tree stand is not the same as ground shooting and should be practiced. Some deer are more apt to move, that is why shooting an alert deer with bow is so hard... How many times do you hear a guy talk about a deer he shot 2 or 3 arrows at before he hit. Some deer are more alert or skittish than others. That being said I feel many hunters aim too high. Video is deceiving as you are not seeing the arrow from the bow/sight and pin used position. But Doc said it well as always, deer have an ability to do matrix like moves that can dodge arrows... And the healthy alert deer is a challenge for any archery equipment! Shot placement, knowledge of my preys ability and my ability to stop him for that perfect shot/distraction,(More hunters should shoot exactly when they are calling/stopping the deer!) and the skill to execute my weapon with deadly force at any range I will more than likely encounter my prey, these are things I value for bow hunting deep woods monarchs. The only sound I worry about is my footsteps, calls and my prey... ADK bow Hunting deep woods fun plain and simple... COME ON Sep 27th!!! Wow I need a vacation... Im just so happy I can shoot again!!! Can't wait to scout some area's and possibly ambush last years beast!

Well the new arrows seem good. They do not penetrate like the 340 at 9.3 gpi but now I have the ability to add a pin to my sight if I want a 80 yard pin. I purchased the lighter arrows because I was shooting the 400 at 8.4 gpi. The new arrows are 8.8 gpi which is closer to the weight I originally shot with the spine I need... I like shooting long distance for practice. I am in the 10 spot(heart) out to 65 yards... Speed = less time for deer jump/more room for errors in distance judging. I do not use a range finder and the guy I shoot with ranges my target after I shoot. I am usually with in 2 yards but I practice a LOT!!! If you shoot your bow at 3D 3 days a week I think you would like the advantages of a faster arrow. Not sure of the weight of my arrow but the arrow is about 29" with a 100 grain tip. So 255.2 + 100 = 355.2. I am sure at over 300 fps it will pass through once I finally pick a worth target to shoot... I was going to shoot a doe the last day but it was just a yearling, loved when I tried the ma ma call and the mother does charged me from behind! I thought they were in front, never saw that one in full view as the doe busted me... COME ONE SEPT 27th!!!! I like the ability to accurately shoot out to 65 yards, while I would not take that long of a shot on a alert or even standing deer, you can bet the farm I will take one out in its bed at that distance... And no I don't need to hear how I suck at hunting, cant get close and this is my excuse for being a poor hunter is to use a fast bow so I can shoot at long distance. I hunt with the equipment I like for many reasons. Lightness of equipment, (One of the main reasons I purchased the Heli-M...) effective range, and extra time in the woods. Bow hunting is basically a tool for me to get into the woods and scout with the ability to take a buck if encounter and worthy. And yes I know doe can be just as challenging, just not for me... I figure as a trophy hunter many do not see my point of view, to each his own I say. As long as you enjoy what you do who cares if you are using a traditional bow, compound, crossbow or 7mm mag they will all kill in the proper hands... I Love hunting deep woods but even hunting on LI is fun and that is all that matters is that we enjoy what we do... I really enjoy long distance shooting, with anything... Target shooting is fun!!! 4 months off due to injury and I can still nail the elk at 65 yards in the heart! Happy to be shooting again!!! Hope this is the year I get my first bow kill!!!

This video is pretty good at explaining why having you trail cams placed above 6ft will help with preventing negative reactions to your presence... This is in reference to deer cams specifically. This negative reaction is one of the main reasons I am hesitant to use them in deep woods, to scare just one deer could be the only one I might have seen for the week... Love all the pics and video's keep them coming!!!

I have read many articles on trail cams and how deer perceive them. Most of the experts seem to agree that getting the cam above 6 ft or at least 6 ft will keep them from seeing it and reacting negative to it. (Higher the better...) They just do not seem to care as much about something they do not see directly in front of them. This video is pretty good covering this. I hope this help some of you, I LOVE your cam pics and videos!!!
