Happy belated birthday Geno C and Jeremy K

Happy Belated B-Day, hope you had a great day! -
Funny how you have to use a 30 or 40 yard pin at 5 yards or less, most do not know this and wonder why they shoot high when the deer is directly under them.
-
Yes, make sure when you rotate it is quiet and try to brush it in good with surrounding brush so your head is the only thing in view when sitting. I like to make a blind spot with brush where most of the deer come in so they can not see your movement, typically I will have shooting lanes set in open area's of the brush.

Much easer than the turkey shoot as you know all the distances, kind of like when we hunt and use a range finder so it is closer to hunting if you use one. I shot a 464 on the North American course and a 541 on the African course for a total of 1005 (With a dryfire thrown in for effect! I was lucky my string was ok!). If you shoot over 1000 you get a R1000 Pin, lucky me! Great time with good friends and lots of FUN!!! If you take it serous this is not the tournament for you it is all for fun! PS: I understand not driving a long distance to shoot one of these tournaments. We can do this in our back yard but if you get a good group of guys and or gals it is loads of fun!

Welcome to the forum, I don't really hunt birds, I shot way to many as a kid!

This was me and a few of the guys last year at the R100 in NJ. Not sure if I will make the NJ shoot this year.

A bunch of us are going to the R100 in Mass. This is a 50 target course each day and it is a two day even with a total of 100 arrows. It is a known distance course so every target you know the distance. More of a fun shoot vs the pro shoots as no real prize is given except for the iron deer and a few other fun shoots they do after the events. This is the link. https://www.r100.org/events/2016/6/sturbridge-massachusetts-26/ We also have shoots at Suffolk Archers just about every week, let me know if any of you want to come and shoot great fun and sharpens your skills. This is the calendar for this month. http://suffolkarchers.com/april Each course can have different point scoring systems. We use 10 for the 2 inner rings with the X marked as an X in case of tie. 8 is the outer insert ring and 5 is any hit on the target usually above the legs again depending on who is running the shoot. PS: Nice shooting Moog5050, you would probably outshoot most of my traditional shooters!

Who does it alone camping weekends? Logging trail snow tires
NFA-ADK replied to sailinghudson25's topic in Big Woods Hunting
Bring a GPS, maps, 2 compasses, extra flashlights, 2 knives, batteries and bulbs and wear really good boots, bring as much food as you can as this trip will use vast amounts of energy, water purifier is much lighter than hiking in liquids. Try to avoid any really steep rocky terrain especially when wet. Clothes really depends on the person and time of year, some people require more than others and some sweat more than others so usually you have to find what is best for you. Wool is good but if you are in an extended rain it can get really heavy, some of the newer blends have better waterproofing to keep you dry. If you plan on staying more than 2 nights you might want to pack in the food and gear first then go in with your clothes and equipment next. Typically I bring a packed raingear in camo as extra wind, rain and cold protection. Make sure you tent is waterproof well and you have a ground tarp to keep any water out. I stay away from propane and gas and tend to use a grill and wood for fires and cooking. GPS Locators are great for emergency, float plan when solo is a must as mentioned. Get in shape, I did a remote excursion down the cold river many years ago, by the time I was at the destination I basically passed out for 2 days trying to recover, lol. If the hike in does not get you the mountains will. Like Joe says if you have never done this before it can be grueling and calamity seems to follow those who do not take it serious. Best advice is to be prepared for anything and remember if you get a deer you have to drag it out. Dragging a 180lbs deer out a few miles can be a real pain with friends, solo is extremely difficult. -
Only contest I have is between myself and the game I persue. Perfect!!!

This 4 point not legal in the NY antler restricted zones.
NFA-ADK replied to Rattler's topic in Deer Hunting
New regs: Antlers must have at least 18 inches on one side, 4 point at least 1 inch or longer, 2.5 inch circumference around G1, minimum of a 2 inch on G2, Min of are you kidding me! LOL you really think most hunters want so sit on stand measuring a deer antlers and wondering if it is legal to shoot! Hell a 8 point or better comes out on most hunters and all they want to do is get a shot, not sit and count points or try to figure if the inside beam is 16 inches through 40 yards or brush! Most hunters are not trophy hunters and just want to shoot any deer! Buy yea lets impose what I want everyone to do so I can shoot a big deer and no one shoots my spikes, I don't care if he needs meat for the winter I want easy bucks to kill because I never learned to hunt and want to sit in my stand with 10 and 12 points running amok. Sorry I got carried away in the end their. Simply put we are already choosing to pass many deer as advanced hunters and yes many of you are part of this group, don't deny your inexperienced hunters from doing what you once where legally able to learn from! It is self serving at best. Education and cooperation is best and is already working. Just my 2 cents take it for what it is. -
Happy B-Day hope you have an awesome day!

SB 4739 - Establishes the yearling buck protection program
NFA-ADK replied to Rebel Darling's topic in Deer Hunting
You could ping pong back and forth for another 30 pages if you want but simply put its an opinion on what is best for the deer. Is anything 100% for deer? No writing here will change someone because we all see different things in our woods. Remember perspective, if I see 10 and 12 point bucks running around I will not think AR is needed yet if I only see 4 point bucks I will demand it. That's just one perspective. The state will make a choice regardless of what is posted here. Continue if you want but I think many of you have better things to do and pretty much all bases have been covered on the subject. Nothing you post will change someone's perspective on the subject. For me personally I do not think it will have an effect yet I would hate to stop the young, meat or inexperienced hunter from harvesting a young buck they are good eating! -
Your in luck the North Folk of LI has many opportunities for deer and turkey. What club do you shoot at, do they have any tournaments? We have some at our club, fun time shooting and hones your skills. I have shot at the Peconic River 3D shoots another fun place. Clothing is usually light as the season starts in October if you hunt till the end you will need warmer clothes as it goes to January and might even be extended past that next year. Good base layers are key for scent control, comfort and warmth, I use something that wicks away moister like Scent lock, Under Armor and Field and Stream all have good base layers depending on how cold it is. Next is usually another layer or outer layer again depending on how cold it is. Most outer layers you will want some sort of water proofing or carry an extra set for rain or high winds. Tree stands broad heads and scouting I can give more info on later.

Welcome to the forum! Hunting deer on LI is done with bow and arrow primarily, do you have one? I mainly hunt deer. I can help with the deer part if your interested. I shoot at Suffolk Archers mostly but also shoot the guns at Ridge. Let me know what you are interested in hunting deer and I can give you some good information. Gun for deer would be up north of the city past Westchester. Suffolk county does have a late shotgun season but it is restricted to certain locations.

Half way through, great so far. All about self improvement and archery. Very cool, thanks for sharing! Never knew Joe R shot a bow, seems he started a few years ago. Home sick, helps me take my mind off being sick. Thanks for sharing Jeremy K.

Watching it now.

My pack is always full so I went with a gun as light as I could find and love it. The 44 Mag in the short barrel model 94 AE fits me perfect. Easy follow up easy reload and with little kick I am right on target if a second shot is needed. Open sights make this a great stalking gun where quick target acquisition is required in thick cover. I can't shoot very far with it but over the years most of my shot are up close and personal with 65 yards being one of my longer shots. Very consistent never having it jam ever!
