Either. I've killed a lot more deer with open sights than scopes. I've never shot a deer past 70 yards. I guess maybe I could have shot at further deer had I been using a scope, but I only remember a couple instances of that. My muzzleloader has open sights, so does my old shotgun. The new shotgun this year will have a scope though.

Tigerlily. RIP good dog, I love You. -
Who cares how it smells. Once a deer is wounded, recovering it should take priority over not contaminating the area for future hunts.

I think you'll find him in that thick stuff. Great move not pushing him.

Probably should have agreed on a price, and gotten payment before shipping it. Unfortunately, you can't trust people, even on this site. That said though, WTF! Sucks that happened to you. Definitely post the user's name.

I know. I'm just bitter about DEC lately for some reason.
-
If he suddenly veered off, that can be a good sign. Yeah, I've had fatally wounded deer run through open fields.

He's licensed in CA, so his hunter education will carry over. He just needs to go to a DEC licensing agent or buy his license online. If he wants doe tags, he has to wait until November 1st.

Yeah, fork out a stupid amount of money.

So who's nuts? The guy who takes an anti-depressant? The guy who sees a therapist? Where do you draw that line? That's one damn slippery slope.

I'd buy it if it were stainless. The 220 is the gun I've been trying to save for. $425 is dirt cheap.

Good job! I like that hole on the main beam.

You got the ass part right.

We're out this morning in Naples. 2 greys and a red so far. White oaks are dropping acorns like crazy. There were a lot of squirrels out this morning, but it's slowing down now. I'm proud of him, he got 3 reds and a grey yesterday. The kid's a diehard.

Have fun! I'm heading down to camp tonight. I've still got to form & pour a new lid for the septic tank this weekend. I've been putting it off for years, & now it's down to the wire. The old one is crumbling and about to fall in. Oughta be great! Still can't wait to be at camp though.

https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/post2015/transformingourworld This is agenda 21 on steroids. For those of you who aren't familiar with agenda 21, you'd better wake up. This isn't conspiracy theory. It's real & it's happening now. The words "sustainable" "equitable" "transformative" "collective" etc, should scare the crap out of you. "We are determined to take the bold and transformative steps which are urgently needed to shift the world onto a sustainable and resilient path." "We pledge that no one will be left behind." "11.1 By 2030, ensure access for all to adequate, safe and affordable housing and basic services and upgrade slums" "17.1 Strengthen domestic resource mobilization, including through international support to developing countries, to improve domestic capacity for tax and other revenue collection" The above is just a hint of what lies in this agenda. The goals may sound nice to the ignorant person, but the underlying meaning and the implications for all of us are terrifying. If you don't want to believe or hear about this stuff, that's fine, it's too late for you anyway. Don't bitch though, no one is forcing you to read this thread. Go climb back under your rock.

What have you done this year to prepare for the 2015 season?
Skillet replied to burmjohn's topic in General Hunting
Put up 2 new stands, so that makes 6 locations on our property, 2 of which are doubles (for my kid & I). Did a ton of trimming and mowed some nice trails. This is Jr's first season, so he's been shooting his bow as much as possible all summer, & is grouping well. Put out cute little markers at 20 yards around the double sets, so he has a good visual boundary (I'm not letting him shoot past 20). Bought the GF a new crossbow, & one for myself. Already dry-fired mine because I'm an idiot. That stupidity cost me $60 for new limbs, but props to Excalibur (customer svc is awesome & I had the new limbs in 3 days). Got permission from a neighbor to hunt his land bordering ours, & picked out a killer gun spot on this super steep hillside, overlooking a bunch of intersecting logging trails. It's so thick and steep that nobody goes anywhere near there. Trimmed / marked a trail to find my way into it. -
I'm not going to get serious until the temps drop, It's a long season. I hate being rushed to process a deer. Hot weather is for spring turkey hunting.

I always have good luck in the freezer aisle at 'ol grandma Wegmans place.

But in 3 weeks, it will only be October 12th. Surely you mean 3 weeks and 4 days. ???? Just busting yer nuts!

Congrats Greensider!

I hunt 34 acres in 8N (Naples). I've killed 2-3 deer every season for years. Neighbors kill several every year, too. It's a vast area down there, & I've never noticed a shortage of deer from year to year. Do they give out a lot of dmp's where you hunt, or is it a preference point area? I have no idea about your hunting area, but I'm willing to bet you could kill more deer.

They do make a crossbow version. Great point about the speeds, I never thought of that. I know a crossbow has more kinetic energy, but would that contribute to the blades opening mid - flight?
