Arrived at Geneseo just before 6 am . Walked to my pod blind by the pond . Wow ! The guy who farms my sister in laws property cleared out a lot of small trees and crap from the pond field . I believe he is going to clear the whole area and put in some drain hose to run the water to a nearby ditch . that should help dry the field that stays wet year round . Anyway , I got settled into the blind and waited . Between 8:45 and 9:30 I heard two shots from different directions . It had started snowing early and just kept coming down . Around 10:30 I heard a shot beyond the woods followed by another and more for a total of 5 shots . It sounded like the shooter was moving during each shot . I wondered if he was chasing a deer . Funny ! Around 1 pm , after not seeing anything , I thought I would pack up and leave as I hadn't seen anything and I figured I had better be able to get my car out of the field as the snow had accumulated and I was hauling my trailer . Some before and after pics from the same camera after a lot of overgrown was dozed and bush hogged ...

Congrats John . Beautiful looking deer . Must have gotten fat off of the Villa Roma grass !

Might have to try to buy some of those big orange garbage bags that they use for roadside pickup .

That must be what I saw yesterday while sitting in a stand overlooking a wet spot . I found the image for fisher and that's what I saw . Neat !

What does the primer on the Remingtons look like after failing to fire ? Are the primers set in farther than the other slugs ?

My son got a 8 point last night just before quitting time . We waited a bit as he wasn't sure if and where he hit it . Spent a lot of time looking for blood and to see where he might have dug into the ground while hauling butt . Never saw a spot of blood but continuing to look paid off and we found his deer .

Saw a deer moving that was on a cart ? What an idiot ! Lock his butt up !

Went to Marion this am and was in my double stand by 6:10 . Heard the 1st shot at 6:24 . Another at 6:37 . Four more at 6:45 and a barrage of gunfire at 6:55 . I never saw anything until 9:05 but heard shooting in all directions . Had a doe and fawn start to head my way but they changed directions and headed toward the woods . Damn . They were within 60 yards and upwind but too much brush to try a shot . Saw one run across a crop field thank's to some snow . Later I had a fawn run up a drive , stop and run back . That was it for the am . I was wearing my Milwaukee heated jacket in the am and the battery fizzled out after 3 hours . I got out of the stand at noon and went to my car . Had a couple of sandwiches , coffee and back in the stand by 1 pm . Put my sleeping bag over my shoulders and stayed toasty warm .Saw nothing all afternoon . My oldest son called me around 4:10 and said he was going to walk slow at the edge of the woods toward his brother and see if he could push something to him . I could barely make him out as he was across the field and in the woods . Thanks Blaze Orange . At 4:35 I heard a shot . I was packing up my gear and my youngest said he had shot and wanted to wait before checking it out as he wasn't sure about the hit . I thought , crap , it's gonna get dark . Well we started looking and couldn't find blood . Walked the woods and field in the dark and almost gave up as we still couldn't find any trace of blood . My youngest son thought the buck had made a right after running to the field but had run straight out and dropped and it was recovered . A real nice 8 point . Although I didn't get a shot I saw 5 doe and my son got a beauty of a buck on opening day .

I used my Milwaukee heated jacket this am . The battery lasted about 3 hours . I put a recharged one in at 1 pm but didn't turn it on . Instead , I grabbed my sleeping bag , put it over my shoulders and was comfy warm . It blocked the wind at my back also . Gettin older - gettin smarter !

I plan to arrive at my spot in Marion around 6 am . Get my gear out and walk slow to the stand . I will only have to walk about 200 yards . I should be in the stand by 6:30 and legal time to shoot is 6:59 by the chart in the Regs Booklet .

At 73 I have kinda had it with the cold . I used to be able to stand it better before having a Kidney Stone operation but now I get cold fairly easily . It's going to be in the 20's tomorrow am and I am going to try out my Milwaukee heated jacket and see if it helps . I bought backup batteries for it so I should be in good shape . You can kiss old school goodbye !

Happy Birthday GMan ..............

Belo -- I have a Winchester 12 ga that I bought in 1965 . It has the trigger guard safety that makes a noticeable click then taking the safety off . I use my thumb and finger to move it and that pretty much silences it .
-
The guy said it had well over 40 ticks on it and he didn't want them in his garage as they can be dormant for over a year before they need another host . I should have asked him to take pics .

Happy 239th birthday !

While I was in my stand this afternoon I got a call from a friend . He said he had shot a doe , field dressed it and took it home . He felt something , looked at his hand and saw a bug and realized it was a tick . He flicked it off and realized it was a tick and checked out the deer close . He told me that there was at least 40 of them on the deer and he saw a couple that were huge . He wanted to know what to do with the deer and I wasn't sure . I think I would have used a couple of 3mil bags and double bagged that deer and put it in the garbage . I told him to check his hunting clothes and anything else he came in contact with and to buy some Permethrin to use in the future . I have been lucky enough to have never seen any ticks on a deer . How would you dispose of a Tick infested deer ?

Was in my stand by 6:30 after placing a couple of scent wicks . The only sighting was a small buck and a button buck between 7 and 8 am . Nothing after that . Got down from the stand and walked up the hill to my car . Had some coffee and a couple of granola bars . Moved to my old stand along the trail with my back to the gulley . Sat there until 4 pm and figured I had enough of nothing for one day and left . As i took my release off , the nut that holds the trigger arm fell off . What the heck ! What else could go wrong ? I found out later when I got to the car that I had left my seat pad on the stand . I wasn't about to go back and get it . I took my backup release out of my backpack in case an opportunity arose while climbing the hill . Stopped off at the hardware store on the way home and bought a replacement nut ..... M5 ..... 65 cents . Fixed the broken release .

Heading out for South Bristol in a few minutes to hunt with 2 of my sons . Looks a bit nippy at 36 degrees and a 5 mph south wind . Hope the deer are moving !
