  1. I kill the first legal Deer I see to give me more time to small game hunt so the answer to the question is yes. Al
  2. As the old saying goes "It is not the size of the dog in the fight, It is the size of the fight in the dog!
  3. So after I got the Squirrel rifle sighted in with patched round balls I decided to fire some little 110 gr maxi balls I found online, the rifle has a 1 in 48 twist so in theory it should shoot bullets half way decent. So I fire two shots and both bullets print right on the money but when I pull the trigger on number three I get a misfire, put another cap on hope that I can clear the barrel and another pop from just the primer. Take the nipple off and stick a pick into the flash hole, reassemble and fire another shot and still nothing. So this is the first time ever I had a failure to fire with any of my black powder rifles and one thing I know is is not so easy to clear the barrel of an old style sidelock. Unlike an inline where one can just take off the breach plug and ram the load out with a rod these sidelocks are a whole different ballgame. But something came to the rescue, I had in my black powder box a thing-a ma-jig called the "Thompson Center Magnum Silent Ball Discharger" it is one of those things like the stuck case remover I have on my reloading bench, and as the saying goes, you may never have the need to use it but the one time you do you will wish you had one. So I actually got this gizmo as a gift about 25 years ago and had no idea if it would work, read the instructions and assembled it, put the end over the nipple and gave it a hard push and 'pop!" the load flew out onto the ground as neat as could be, so this thing works great and I am so happy to have had it available. Only had one small CO2 cartridge that came with the device and the one firing depleted it's contents so that ended the maxi ball experiment until I get some new CO2 cartridges, have some ordered and on the way. 4. Including you, I will go with my list and their agenda over the bunch of posers your candidate Biden put up!
  5. Thankfully there are people like me that call you out on your smoke and mirrors, that bunch you listed is so phony it is laughable and if hunting ended tomorrow they could give two shits! The list below is the real deal and there are not any that supports Biden! NRA Sportsman'a Alliance Safari Club Ducks Unlimited National Wild Turkey Federation Quality Deer Management Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Boone & Crockett Club Mule Deer Foundation Pheasants Forever National Trappers Association National Shooting Sports Foundation NY State Houndsman Conservation
  6. I read it all and I am not buying into that sack of lies for one second, as far as I am concerned anyone who is for Biden is in no way shape or form a friend to the outdoor and shooting sports Mr Duper! Al
  7. Democrats rolling out the same old playbook around election time portraying themselves as friends of the outdoor sports when nothing can be farther from the truth. Obama shooting skeet, Hillary claiming she Duck hunted and John Kerry the great bird hunter, all smoke and mirror bullshit as anyone that has been in the trenches with these phonies knows. Al
  8. Got the smoke poles out to check zero and try a couple of new loads for the upcoming season. The Thompson Center Cherokee 45 caliber is what I am going to use this year for Deer. It has been one of the most picky rifles I have ever come across, I have finally got this thing shoot the way I like using Pyrodex RS and cast lead Thompson Center Maxi Balls, a load which pretty much is the equivalent the the 44 mag pistol load which should be effective with no problem out to 100 yards or so. The Thompson Center Hawken is also 45 cal and that shoots just about everything I stuff down the stainless Green Mountain barrel well, but she weighs a couple of more pounds than the Cherokee which is a dream to handle and carry. Got the Traditions Squirrel rifle 32 cal zeroed in with the changed out fire sights, my old eyes are a problem with any open sights these days and the fire type sights have been my best solution and all three muzzleloaders now have them. Will hit the timber and see if I can kill something. Al
  9. I only use HiTech rests, the one on my recurve broke today, just ordered a couple of new new flippers. Al
  10. We all have different skill levels but I am a believer that practice in all shooting genres will take one to their optimum potential, as the old saying goes "practice makes perfect". Al

    45/70?

Not a Katahdin, a standard Encore with a regular 24 inch stainless barrel.
  12. At one time it was common to hunt crows with rifles, I have probably shot as many Crows with a rifle as with a shotgun. Back before Coyotes when Woodchuck populations were in large numbers living open agricultural areas Crows would be in the big open fields along with Woodchucks and I would take both with long range varmint rifles. I liked hunting them as much as Woodchucks, some of the best long range shots I ever made were on Crows. Al

    45/70?

I own a couple of 45-70 rifles, a lever action Marlin 95 passed down to me from my Dad and more recently I purchased a 45-70 Thompson Center Encore single shot. The Marlin 95 had been used quite a bit, my Dad took his last Deer with that rifle and I have taken 3 with it myself. I have only used mildly loaded factory ammo in the Marlin and it will kill Deer no problem. The Marlin 95 has a strong action that can fire loads hotter than what is factory available, good handloads will definitely increase it's capability. The Thompson Center Encore is set up completely different, I fire handloaded ammo using a stash of old 350 and 400 gr. copper jacket pointed soft point Barnes bullets loaded to the max that should only be used in strong modern firearms. I believe I could hunt with confidence any big game in North America with this setup and not be under gunned in anyway. Both rifles are are very accurate and are sighted in for short ranges out to 150 yards max because the habitat I hunt. That being said the 45-70 can be very effective at long range, the old Buffalo hunters proved that with their Sharps single shots. Al
  14. There are no flies on the 7X57 Mauser cartridge, with modern bullets and loaded ammo it is just about the ideal Deer round, a virtual duplicate of the 7mm08. As for the rifle itself I can't say but if it is a German Mauser 98 and in good condition you have a fine piece that would be a very capable big game rifle. Al
  15. This has been the biggest bullshit argument ever, nobody knew how to handle this deal and everybody made mistakes, there is plenty of blame to go around for everybody and there should be zero politics. Al
  16. There is a recall on Henry singleshots.... I have done the trigger work on the Henry myself, it works just the way I like and as far as I am concerned it is absolutely perfectly safe. I got the weight of pull down to 4.5 lbs and tested it every way I know how for safety with a primed empty case. Al
  17. Plan on using my Thompson Center Cherokee 45 cal for muzzle loading season and will probably go with the Henry single shot in 357 mag during regular season. If I do any archery hunting I will be using my Bear recurve. Al
  18. Piling on more useless laws or banning certain classes of firearms has proven not to be the answer time and time again, the current laws are grossly non enforced, unless of course you are upstanding citizens like the ST Louis couple defending their property and made an example of as part of a publicity stunt. Cities with the most restrictive stringent of gun laws are ones that shootings are rampant in and getting worse. The illegal guns must be taken off the streets for it to stop. If there was ever a common sense approach to illegal guns stop and frisk is it, the penalty for having an illegal gun should be severe and shooting someone with an illegal gun a lot more severe the, lock the scum up and throw away the key, I have zero sympathy for these thugs. The only ones that have anything to fear about stop and frisk are those that are up to no good. Al
  19. I have the thin profile Honeywell Howard Leight impact electronic sport muffs I use for shooting and they are completely adjustable for volume, if the sound is too loud just turn down the volume to where you like. Same goes for the in the ear hearing aid types. As for what direction sound comes from I have no problem figuring that out. Al
  20. I have killed many a game animal because I heard it long before seeing it, anything that enhances hearing that is not cumbersome is an advantage in my opinion. Especially these days as I use a hearing aid to help compensate for hearing loss from my early years of blasting away with firearms using no hearing protection. Al
  21. Something similar has already been started in Democrat led California As of April 25th of 2020, you must meet the following criteria to purchase ammunition in California: Be a current resident of California Pass “Eligibility Check” aka Background check Be 21 years of age or older to purchase handgun ammunition Be 18 years of age or older to purchase rifle or shotgun ammunition On July 1st of 2019 phase 2 of Proposition 63 began and applied to gun stores and gun shows throughout the state. At this point ammunition sales now require a $1 fee (paid by you of course) for a point-of-sale background check, or eligibility check as the DOJ calls it. No ammo can be purchased through mail or other shippers from out of state nor can one go out of state to buy ammo. Also hunting with traditional ammo that contains lead has been banned, Hunting licenses sold annually in California has fallen 70 percent — from 764,000 in 1970 to 225,000 in 2019, even as the state’s population has doubled, easy to see why! "DEMOCRATS" As the saying goes "Elections have consequences!" "
  22. As Yogi would say "It's Deja Vu all over again." Al
  23. It has been my experience that the "Humane Society Of The United States" is the biggest organizer of mass anti hunting attacks to stop events such as in the original post. If they catch wind of anything they believe they can disrupt it is almost guaranteed they will be in attack mode. They have a multi million dollar budget. Below is their agenda straight from the Horse's mouth! By the way they are Democrat supporters! Al ================================================================================ "As a matter of principle, The HSUS opposes the hunting of any living creature for fun, trophy, or sport because of the animal trauma, suffering, and death that result. "If we could shut down all sport hunting in a moment, we would." "Our goal is to get sport hunting in the same category as cock fighting and dog fighting." "We are going to use the ballot box and the democratic process to stop all hunting in the United States ... We will take it species by species until all hunting is stopped in California. Then we will take it state by state.
