The edge on a gut hook is not used nearly as much as the edge of the main blade so it should be easy to maintain with just a good touchup tool. Those carbide V type sharpeners are very good at putting on a quick very sharp edge. The models used for archery broadheads may work best because of their small size to get in that tight area. Al

Good luck with that Mr non hunting troll, my dumb ass is going to keep on preaching your so called bullshit belief structures no matter who wins, for me it has always been about party platform and policy. The hope for me is the #1 Cheerleader continues to be a good sharp piece of barbed wire stuck up your libtard butt four more agonizing years. Al

My favorite kind of hunting is teaming up with a good hunting dog, nothing is more fun for me. I have trained and hunted with various hunting dog breeds since I was a young fellow, my favorite breed is the Airedale Terrier. I have hunted just about everything there is to hunt with a dog in NY with my Airedales with pretty fair success. Their versatility on a wide variety of game both fowl and fur is unsurpassed in my opinion. "Tucker" was one of my favorite Airedales pictured below treeing a Squirrel. Coon hunting was probably my favorite game with dogs and while my Airedales did fairly well at it a top notch coonhound is what you want if serious. I have quite a bit of experience with several of the coonhound breeds and there is certainly top performers in all but I settled on the English coonhound. "Eli" pictured below was one of my favorites, he was about as good as they come. Al

I hunt on the ground but I do not use a blind, any shot I take I always try to use some kind of rest, sitting or kneeling I will use my knee if I can for a rest. Using trees can help for a rest, they help a lot giving a much more solid semi offhand shot, I in fact used that method on last year's Deer. That being said I will and have no problem taking an offhand shot as long as I have confidence in making it. I hunt mostly in fairly wooded cover so most shots I get are short (50 yds would probably be average) and not hard as long as I have a clear view. Al

Sportsman/Gun Owners and the election
airedale replied to Farflung's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
You got that right, those are people of connections, position, property, power and money, they have means of getting around any laws to continue to hunt as much as they please. The are far from the average working stiff who may be lucky to find some decent hunting land to pursue game, the average guys are the folks that will be hit hard by these gun, and conservation laws and regulations. The same approach was and is used in Europe, the Dandys still get to hunt but the every day Joe folks like you see as members on this board get only to read about it. Al -
The Marlin 39 has been out of production for some time now, it is probably a victim of being a very high quality firearm whose price point for profitable sales took it out of the marketplace. They got to be pretty expensive compared to the main competition, "Henry." I would not let that deter me if I had my heart set on one. Mint condition used examples and some even new in the box will turn up from time to time in gun shops, also online outfits like Guns America or Guns International will have them for sale and when the Gun Shows come back it is a good bet one can be found there. I was in the same boat looking for a Savage 99 A in 250-3000, it took me awhile but I finally scored. Also do not discount Ruger bringing that model back once they get Marlin production set. Al

I got to meet Fred Bear once, he was a nice guy. As for any tips he may have said or written about that had anything to do with hunting I would take them seriously and consider them when they applied to the kind of hunting I did and still do. Real experience always matters to me especially so when it comes to those with a lifetime of hunting experiences like old Fred had. I paid attention to not only him but many of the other old masters of hunting for information that helped me be pretty successful in the outdoors, not so much to internet know it alls that want to be at the head of the class. I have been wearing wool forever and have several articles of LLBean hunting clothing and boots, their stuff is known for good quality and long wear, from my experience I have to agree. I have the Bean midweight wool camo coat that I wear in the early season, when the weather gets bitter I wear my Woolrich PA Tux. Al

This actually worked !!! Fooled a big buck !!
airedale replied to Homgister13's topic in Deer Hunting
A Bull will exhibit similar behavior when there is other Bulls around, pawing, sparring with trees and making vocal sounds they refer to as growling, basically chest thumping telling all within earshot he is bad. Al -
My philosophy of Trumps boisterous personality and demeaner is quite simple, "DOES IT ACTUALLY AFFECT MY LIFE IN ANY MEANINGFUL WAY?" NO IT DOES NOT!!! Supreme Court and Federal Judges, Lower Taxes, Pro Gun-Hunting, Fishing and Trapping, Pro Traditional Ammunition, Secure Borders and Legal Immigration, Pro Police, Law and Order, pro Strong Military to name a few are important to my way of life so it is very easy for me to vote Trump and against Democrats whose party is against most of the above and a lot more!!. For me and how I live my life this election between Trump's personality and the Democrat's agenda is not even debatable! Al

I have shot my share over the years and the one thing I have found if you place your shot correctly and are using a decent bullet from any manufacturer matched to the game you are hunting, two holes or one hole, the animals do not go far. Al
-
To be honest I do not know for sure percentage wise, I do know he recovered a few on the off side and said they had the typical perfect Nosler mushroom. I have to say this two holes business is pretty new to me, I never paid a whole lot of attention to this notion as to something that was necessary. I always went by what happened when the shot took place, when the animal drops where it stands or runs a few yards and keels over two holes never entered my mind. Al

My brother uses a Browning BLR chambered in 243, years ago I loaded up a bunch of Nosler 95 grain Partitions for him, he has taken well over 20 Deer with those loads. He said they pretty much drop in their tracks and loves their performance. Al

If you have decent vision once you get the hang of it you can shoot some pretty tight groups using a peep type sight. Things start going south as our eyes age and the sight picture is not as clear when we had young eyes. Glasses definitely will help and I have found single the vision type works best for sight picture, bifocals do not work well for me causing a double vision effect. What has worked best for me is what is called the center hold, below are a couple of illustrations. One difference I use and works well for me is a very fine front bead or blade that covers very little of what I am shooting at. A real fine bead will work better for me when there is longer ranges. Another thing different from the illustrations is most of my front sights have just a blade with no military style side protection. Another thing to consider is aperture size (the opening of your peep) target shooting a small hole allows for a bit tighter groups but causes problems with field of view and light in darker conditions. For hunting I like what most call a ghost ring or I just take out the peep's insert for a large peep to look through. I can still shoot tight groups and have a good field of view. Back when I was younger and could see better I shot some pretty good groups with my Winchester 52 using target peep sights, below is a target showing what they are capable of with some practice. I now have a Redfield 20X target scope mounted on that rifle and do not shoot groups significantly better. If your firearm groups well with the ammo or loads you are firing sighting with a scope it should group well with a peep as long as you have decent vision and practice. Al

The Kingston Armory 22 M1 Garand
airedale replied to airedale's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
As I stated above Kingston Armory company folded a couple of years ago, as far as I know the M14 model never made it into production and none were sold. I love my Garand, but it took a lot of work to get it working right, it is one of my most fun rifles and I shoot it all the time. I removed the Jard trigger and installed a complete Volquartsen trigger assembly this past summer. Al -
So yesterday afternoon I went out with the muzzleloader and once I got in the woods I was trying to figure the wind directions to plot my strategy. Observing the leaves on trees gave me a pretty good idea but what sealed the deal was as I was standing there looking around I took off my hat and my warm shaved bald head immediately let me know the wind direction accurately. Been shaving the old coconut since early summer and have become a huge fan and discovered another of many advantages of a shaved head. No Deer, just saw a few Squirrels Al

A note on the performance and effectiveness of Hornady XTPs, I have taken around a dozen or so Deer with them in 357 and 44 calibers. They have been fired out of handguns, rifles and muzzleloaders at pretty much similar velocities and only one Deer had to be shot twice from a Colt Python 357 revolver, all others dropped in their tracks or stumbled around for up to 25 or 30 yards before going down. I have nothing but the highest regard for their effectiveness. Just saying do your job and they will do theirs.

Sticks and Stones: birth and journey of an arrow
airedale replied to dinorocks's topic in Bow Hunting
Can't wait to see how your primitive arrows turn out, I am going to try to do something similar but am going to cheat big time lol as I do not have the skill to do everything from scratch. I purchased some half way decent Turkey fletched primitive style wood arrows and some knapped arrowheads, will remove the field points and cut some slots and hopefully attach the points solidly myself. Doubt that I will ever actually hunt with them but when I have some free time I like puttering around doing stuff like that. -
Hunting in Europe and Britain have been getting flushed down the toilet for years, between the animal rights groups and anti gun laws banning everything only the people of position and wealth can still hunt the average Joe can only read about hunting. I have acquaintances in the hunting dog world over there and all hunting with dogs in England and Wales was banned in 2005, they can still hunt Rats and Rabbits which are considered vermin they get to use sticks and clubs as owning a firearm is almost impossible. Kind of reminds me of what has been going on in California, Thanks to the Animal Rights groups and Democrat rule Hunting with Dogs has been banned on many species, restrictive gun and ammunition regulation, huge drop off in hunting participation because of it.
