Have all the squirrels died of Covid?
Enigma replied to Slickfins's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Change it up then. Get up, go for a walk and find where they are. Hunting is hunting. Squirrels, deer, turkeys, they all do the same basic things. Find what they're eating right now. They'll be there till the next food source becomes ripe. In my area it's beechnuts then corn. I hunt one spot for only about 1 week a year. We call it the vortex lol. A flat top with beechnut trees, edge to a hemlock grove and bordering a corn field. Like finding the X when goose hunting. Keep at it. You'll find them! -

This ^ And I'll add . . . parboil the 5 pcs till tender, reduce and save the stock, pan fry as above, add mushrooms and a very small amount of onion, make gravy from the stock with a little more flour. Simmer on low till you can't stand it anymore. Serve over spuds. Hands down the highlight dinner for us of the early fall. Or parboil, dry, coat n fry, toss with wing sauce. Squirrel "wings" are killer. Or parboil, remove meat from bones. Substitute squirrel for the chicken in a good chicken n sausage gumbo. A great combo. -

Wow! Glad to hear it was just a mess and no one was close when it went bang. Sound's like a jar/lid failure as you surmised. Good call on ditching the old jars.

Np. I've followed this recommendation with no issues so I think you're good. Be safe and keep up the solid work!

Love it! A steal for sure. See first pic. I got my AAC from a pack rat friend 20 yrs ago. He had picked it up at a garage sale from the "free" pile. He told me to take it cause he'd never use it lol. I remind him what a dope he was every couple years or so haha. Pic 2. My mother, lol, picked up this twisty canner last month at yup, a garage sale. $10. Mom's loooove to look for bargins.

Unfortunate! Tell us how it happened if you could.

What recipe? Everything I know doesn't require p canning tomato products. Short hot water bath n done. Not saying you re wrong, It'd be definitely safe to eat, but I'd just hate to see you wasting extra time. See pic for a page from the AAC cookbook. Bottom part of the page. Keep us in the loop!

And FWIW, I used a new-to-me type of jar lid for this canner run. They're from China, purchased on Amazon by the gf. They are definitely thinner than your standard Ball brand lid but they were inexpensive and everything I ran yesterday sealed nicely. I know local supplies can get limited at this time of the year so this might be an alternative to someone if they get in a bind.

Thanks for posing this pic. I had an "aha" moment when I saw it. My AAC does not have the weighted pressure release on the top like yours. It only has a pressure gauge and a flip type pressure release (its old). So when I run it I have to mess with the heat some to get it to settle in around 11#'s. I see how the system on yours would be easier to run. Thanks again for the pic.

Made chicken soup yesterday for my gf. Two quarts and five pints (she took one pint before I got a pic). She likes to take a pint to work for lunch. She likes just chicken, celery and onions. I added some poultry seasoning on a whim and it darkened it up some. It was good. Best part is she likes it alot and thinks I'm a genius chef haha. I lied a little bit and said I slaved over it.

Like I said. I understand. Might not be your, or mine, definition of hunting per se, but it seems to work for him. So I'd just say good for him. He was proud to post it up here so I see no reason to piss on his parade. Hunting means different things to different people that's all. Agree or not he put the protein in the freezer.
-
I get what you're saying . . . but . . . Why's it so much different than folks joining a co op with a pig contract and picking up their organic free range hog in mid-Sept to send to the butcher? It might not be your definition of hunting, nor mine, but he (sorta) has a smile in his pic, sounds like he had a good time and got some good eats. Hard to see the downside.

Do the lights stay on when you leave the door open then the battery goes dead? Just askin lol. Great ride SB. Enjoy.

It's just a tough call. Just been my experience that if killing deer is your objective, laying low and not pissing people off, intentionally or not, will get you the farthest in the long run. YRMV. I hope it works out for you. Keep us updated please!

May the force be with you and your massive set of brass. And bless your awesome wife lol. Beautiful country, enjoy you trip.

Once again, from personal experience, that scenario will become a shit show in short order. Go have a common ground face to face with the neighbor and his son. No agenda. Hope for the best. Tell him you love riding quads too and love to tear it up but were hoping x, y and z. Tact buddy, will be your best ally. Reach out to the dude who kills deer there and try to make an agreement. You might make a friend. And kill a banger. Like I said, its not what you say, its how you say it.

I can appreciate your desire to hunt that property and your initial plan but man oh man, I've been in your exact situation a couple times and it always, always turned into a shit show. Your post got me thinking (again) about how I could've handled things differently and what I learned that could've resulted in a better outcome. Hold up killer! Please consider these golden nuggets of landowner/neighbor/hunter psychology before proceeding. I'll preface the following by saying that I understand the whole "It's my land, I'll protect my deer and hunting and throw your ass off and be a bad ass and prosecute you" crowd. I understand that point of view and sometimes that is the only option. But it really should be the last one if you can help it. It really depends on the circumstances of the situation as each time it's different. Some realities. No one gives a crap who you are unless maybe, you actually own the property. And even then, if you were the actual owner, you'd be the "new" owner which doesn't mean squat to most people who own land next-door. They'll wait for you to make the first move and respond accordingly. When you start slamming up posted signs and knocking on doors telling people how it's going to be from now on it's never going to go over well. Your friend wants you to post and manage the property, but legally, even if he wrote you a lease or legal document explaining your authority, your standing in the eyes of other people (neighbors and judges) wouldn't mean jack. Not law, just reality. Getting LEO and the DEC and the local courts involved is just a huge mess and a waste of time and resources and usually resolves very little. So ask yourself this question. What is your #1 objective? Is it to hunt there and kill deer? Or to be a spokesperson, overseer and policeman for your friend that owns it? Pick a priority. Being both of those things is going to be very, very difficult. What if the hunting just sucks and it is no fault of the neighbors? Since the place is new to you, and you're only going to hunt it for 2 years, does the potential for creating long term animus outweigh the potential for good hunting? I would include the possibility of hunting that piece long-term, for the next 5 or 10 years, into my thought process now. Do the neighbors hunt? How much land do they own? Any chance you could get on their property to hunt as well? Personally I would be more concerned about other people hunting the new property than running around on a four wheeler. If the wheeler use is sporadic and not causing property damage I'd let it slide this year and feel out the situation. Think outside the box. I can tell you hunting loses its fun when your time is occupied fighting about land and who's doing what. Make a plan to hunt your friends place for the next five years and maybe you end up hunting his place AND the 200 surrounding acres of neighboring land. It's not what you say, it's how you say it. Good luck!!!

In an open field setting, depending on the rifle rest, 150 yds for my 243 and 75 yds for my 50 cal inline. Conservative I know but my guns shoot better than I do.
