  1. Love the foil idea. I do not have that in my bag and I should. Also, anything paper will boil water even if set directly into the fire or coals. The paper will not burn
  2. for a lighter I have always wanted a Zippo. Much easier to light in the real cold.
  3. I was debating on whether to place these in the hunting or non-hunting. If Mods think it is the other, please move. Rochester, NY area. I have a Camp Trails OMEGA External frame back pack- I bought it new and carried it 3 times. It is in MINT condition. It has a huge capacity and I carried a weeks worth of gear and food in to ADK hunting. Very comfortable. $140 I also have a Jansport D3 External framed pack. I bought this for my wife and she never used it. I took it on on weekend trip becasue it have a smaller capacity. This one is even more comfortable than the Omega. It is especially nice if you are on steep terrain. You can see the hip belt has adjustment to change center of gravity for uphill or down hill. $100 I have a Timberline 3 man Eureka Tent with Vestibule. The pic is not of the actual tent but it is in perfect condition. (the 4 times above and one family weekend at the park was all it was used). The Vestibule is NOT integral to the tent so you can set it up with or without it. $100 I'll sell the whole set for $300 together. (won't even charge extra for the neat optic orange straps...lol)
  4. I have a whistle that doubles as a waterproof match holder. I think there may even be a cheap compass on one end.
  5. A bottle of hand sanitizer works pretty well. Serves two purposes.
  6. A book is ok as a reference, but trying to develop a skill when it could be a life or death need while reading about it is about worthless in my view. It's actually kind of neat in my book to try some of these skills. build a couple different kinds of traps. Try a couple different ways to make a fire. Take a compass and a topo map and try to navigate to a landmark. One of the best sets of books that I have read, deals with many topics even beyond just survival skills. Look into the Foxfire books.
  7. it will be reflected inthe pricing but you can negotiate the lease price with 10k,12k 15,000 miles a year. I got my wife a Murano years back and told them to price for 15 a year becasue I knew she would use it. It is cheaper that way than paying overages.
  8. I wish I had cruise. Biggest thing I miss. 175k miles and still ticking.
  9. That is like a new truck compared to my 2008 Nissan Titan...lol. Hell, the only amenity I have is Air Conditioning. No power anything.
  10. As a parent our children's heartbreaks are harder than our own. I hope it works out for her. Have her google some of the famous Pro athletes that actually got cut form their High School teams. What set them apart later in life was their drive to succeed and honestly some do blossom a bit later. Carmelo Anthony, Michael Jordan, Orel Hershiser and one that might have even more meaning to her, Lionel Messi.
  11. I'm riding shotgun with Moog. We should be there about 7pm .
  12. I like the silicone option but you have to make sure the concrete top is very clean. You can also use a gasket. I would go to Lowes and in the plumbing section they sell bulk flexible plastic lines. They have a couple that are like very soft rubber. Make a circle and stick one end in the other and then attach it using concrete anchors like Tapcons. They you can you a not shrink grout or a hydraulic cement like G-man said.
  13. Our pipe fitting and plumbing apprenticeships require you to be a High school graduate or have a GED. Level 1 apprentice in MD starts out at $18 and hour. raise every 1,000 hours worked (usually about 6 months). At end of 4 years that rate is $38 an hour. We pay for schooling and books. They come out with a State Journeyman's license. Work a year as a Journeyman with no safety, quality or productivity issues and if you are willing to mentor a new apprentice you can get another bump to $42 an hour. That is a 23 year old making over 87 grand, not counting overtime. We probably lose 80% to attendance issues. They can't show up for work.
  14. It's at that point now. If you are in a skilled trade, want a job and are not employed it is either becasue you have no work ethic, don't want show up to work, or can't pass a drug test.
  15. The states register and approve standards but the apprenticeships and schooling aren't run by the states.
  16. I am in no way making excuses for how this was handled. They screwed this up from the fist contact with you. I just want to convey a situation and I still am not clear on the role the guy you actually handed your ticket money to had in the chain. I have had buddies that were selling tickets to raffles, a couple were even gun raffles. The clubs assigned the tickets to be sold by members and track who is responsible for what number tickets. In one case there was a winning ticket seller gun. I am always taking their tickets that they were assigned into my work place because the guys at work love to buy them and get in on raffles. I remember seeing my one buddy's name on the back of the stubs (the part that goes into the drawing , not the one they give to the purchaser). He didn't win the gun but if he had I wouldn't have expected to be considered the "seller". Personally I think they are guilty of piss poor public relations and not handling this correctly but I haven't seen anything posted that makes me think there was fraud. Honestly if the face of the ticket didn't say anything about the award of a sellers gun I would think that it would be an uphill climb in small claims. My opinion. (and of course that and $6 will get a Starbucks's coffee)
  17. I have a couple buddies that do it as well. Most of them pull big travel trailers and set up "home" where they are. That 150k is with quite a bit of OT but they usually take about 3 months off and vacation in a nice relaxing place.
  18. In typical fashion Storm doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground. A simple stroll though any online system like Indeed, Career builder and Zip Recruiter will show he is wrong. A Union Welder may have a total package that approaches that but it certainly isn't their wage. The pipe welder is incidental to the pipe fitting and paid at the pipe fitting rate. The prevailing/Union rate is the highest scale in an area and I'd bet it's under $60 an hour.
  19. Ours is above and beyond as well. It really isn't that hard to do it right and have the workers protected. Everyone should be able to go home as healthy as they went to work.
  20. The big ones on the table are real bologna size. 10# each. It makes a KILLER fried bologna sandwich. Needed some good rye bread for it but made due with white.
  21. I'd still think the risk is less if the DEC had the reins. Let's face it. In NY it will always be a Democrat controlled state barring the City sliding into the ocean. The downstate Legislators don't know their a$$ from a hole in the ground when it comes to conservation and management efforts.
  22. I bought my Carbon Element from Rich. I have not had a bad experience at Bullzeye. I can't say the seam for Traditions Archery and that is probably why they are no longer in business. Belo. Pretty neat outdoor range there huh? Nice tower to practice out of as well.
