15 min from me. He is a true giant for sure. A lot of big deer in our neck of the woods.
-
I also feel that if your deer is traveling a distance there is a good chance it will be shot by another hunter. I would never claim that deer. JMO Years back the gun club below us shot a nice 140 buck. Someone took a Texas heart shot on him on a drive. Deer was shot at 9 am. My brother killed the deer at 12 noon. It was tracked for 3 hrs in the snow. They had about 5 blood beds but kept on pushing the deer. After he killed the deer we gutted it and one of the trackers walked up to us. He said I just want to look at the deer, we hit one hours ago and were tracking it. We looked it over and found that a slug went through the back ham and exited out the flank. Was this a kill shot??? No. The guy thanked us for taking a look and walked away. It turned out this was my neighbor to the north that I never met. We are good friends now but we both knew that deer was not going to die from the initial shot.

not to complicate a fatal shot but if there is snow on the ground?? Easy track even if its slowly bleeding. Fatal shot to me is when a deer dies pretty close to where it was hit. Within 100 yards or so. If another hunter were to shoot it well then shot placement is key.

What do you think? I know we travel rt 17 from Harriman to Howard that's 4 hours. Very little road kill this year. Two of the bucks killed opening day were seeking does. Read the article what do you think? http://www.wellsvilledaily.com/sports/20180226/2018-rut-very-early-then-good-for-gun-season

This could be. He lived for another 7 minutes or so. When I walked up I could tell he wasn't breathing then he would take a gasping big breath then fade away again just to do it over and over. A few times his legs started to go in motion then stopped.
-
The guy who capped it said he found the slug on the other side of the neck didn't exit. Must of been shock that brought him down. I thought a few times he was getting up with leg movement but just stayed put. Deer is a hog with plenty of meat.!
-
I have a feeling you are right. Trauma brought him down and the bullet went into cavity. Once I got to the lungs and heart a ton of blood pooled out.
-
Here is the placement. It was the other side though. No exit hole 100 yards.
-
Right but my shot was not high in the neck. It was 1.5 inches from the bottom end.
-
That is great!

Thanks bud they are awesome!

I have shot deer through the neck pretty much brigs them right down. This was the case with the buck I shot this weekend. He was a big 2.5 year old. Took him at 100 yards 1187 with lightfield slugs. He was broadside but neck turned looking in my direction. The slug entered half way down the neck 1.5 inches from the bottom side of the neck. There is no exit hole. I'm asking myself what I hit to bring him down like that? Did it change direction and go up to the brain or down. I'll ask the guys who skin him but it has me baffled. Deer dropped in his tracks and died in about 7 minutes. Let me know what you think.

So the boys up at the cabin saw a few but no shooters during the last weekend of bow. We got up there Sunday and continued the hunt. I didn't see much 2 doe 1 5 pt and a button buck. My brother saw twin buttons that werelike puppies in the woods! I stalked one of the buttons to 20 yards it was cool. So opening day comes and we have 14 inches of snow. It continued to snow right through Sunday giving us another 3 inches. It was tough hunting. My Niece managed to tag out with "Red" a 5 pt we named because of his reddish coat. It was her first buck. I saw from the honey hole a doe with two small fawns. They just appeared under my stand. With all the snow you have to have your head on a swivel. I saw a real nice grey looking buck out far for a few seconds and then it vanished. About an hour later along came my buck. About 100 yards. Didn't know what it was until it turned its head. The only shot I had was a neck shot and I took it. Put him down in his tracks. An inch lower he lives. We also encountered two coyotes running yearlings. You wouldn't believe how quick they are. My brother saved a young doe from them by shooting the first one. Pretty crazy. Enjoy the picts!

I have seen deer this year on Long Island where I have never seen before. I expect that big one I posted last week eats the pavement. He is way too close to 25A where its 50mph.

Happy Birthday!

Here is the game plan. This week we have three hunters going to the cabin Thursday through Sunday. My brother and I get to the cabin Sunday. We are bow hunting all week then gun hunt right though Tuesday. Looking forward to a safe great season!
