  1. It depends on alot of things but I would definitely want it to be close enough to use and get to in an emergency. Trust me there will be emergencies. Another thought is will you be retiring there? My camp has alot lower taxes so that's part of my long term plan. I think Jersey will have high taxes, probably Conn. too. Maybe Pa. but I don't know if their seasons are long enough. If you can take off to enjoy their season that would be an option. Good luck.
  2. Congrats Bill. Now, when I see you on TV I can tell people I shot with you. Best to Eileen.
  3. Just applied for my Maine Moose permit. For some reason I have a good feeling this year. I have 5 preference points so I'm hopeful. Good luck to all the other applicants for out of state permits.
  4. Good luck. I hunted South Carolina for the first time last year and I plan on making it a regular destination.
  5. Dom, I'm not an expert but I think you would need to be near a major fishing area plus you will need to sell rods and equipment. I doubt if you could make it just on fishing, you'll probably need to do archery or other sports like kayaks and mountain bikes. This willl translate into alot of expensive inventory. Take a ride down to Davis on 17 near Harriman and check them out. Probably a million in inventory plus they are between Harriman State Park and Sterling Forest and close enough to draw guys from Jersey. Don't intend to discourage you just think you should know what you're up against. Hope you do it and succeed. Let us know if you open a place and I'll take a ride up and buy something. Good Luck.
  6. Grouse, I'm hoping that the new o/u will keep me happy for a little while but I will definitely look into the CZ for a SXS. TY for the advice
  7. I don't think moose rub but they do eat the bark of certain trees. The ones that were shown to me in Maine showed teeth marks scraping the trees. I was told they only do this in winter when food is scarce.
  8. I remember a monster was shot some time ago right in Sterling Forest before it was a state park. Maybe 20-30 years ago.
  9. It was and I agree. BTW somebody better grab the H&R on this site before I do and I don't need it, but it's a steal for that price.
  10. Well I bought a used Stoeger from another member and it's a beaut. Can't wait to try it out.
  11. I would expect him to allow you to get your buck. Especially if the second tag was not legit.
  12. Good luck Pygmy I'm gonna apply again in Maine myself for the same reason. I have friends that will guide me. For all those interested in a Canada Moose hunt, they have OTC tags in Newfoundland and Labradour. I can't afford that but might do a fall bear hunt in Maine or Canada.
  13. If there is a lien on the property it stays as far as I know. When I checked into this the county clerk's office told me I had to check for liens myself. Maybe you can pay the taxes and work out a short sale with the bank but do the short sale first. Good luck.
  14. Thanks for the input. I guess I'll pick one.
  15. I looked at a couple of Stoeger doble barrel shotguns. Then another store had the Baikal doubles plus they still make a combo shotgun rifle over under like the old Savage model 24. The cost was between $400 and $600 at the store. There were some cheaper on line but there would be shipping and FFL fees. Now most of the bargain double barrel shotguns from Remington and Ithaca and CZ are coming from these countries plus Turkey. Does anyone own any of these? Any comments? Buy or keep saving?
  16. Last time I checked it had to be a single shot and on your permit to hunt with.
  17. I know I am and a few others for sure. Can you give any info like price, accomodations, success rate? How many hunters do you have at a time? How many bait stands?
  18. I just found the thread re: NYC ordering all guns that hold six rounds or more have to be modified, sold or destroyed. Seems like an apologist for the anti-gun lobby. Is that you Mayor Bloomburg?
  19. Elmo, might want to change or cancel your order before it arrives. The fact that it's now illegal should force the dealer to be OK with this. City might not let you register it anyway and you'll take a hit reselling it cause now it's used even if you never open the box. Might also want to move to Nassau or Suffolk. Not being funny, it's nice to live somewhere you still have rights. My car got broken into in the city and when I told the cop a pocket knife had been stolen he acted like he wanted to arrest me. Asking why I needed a knife. I explained first I wasn't carrying it and I used it to cut rope when I tie stuff on the roof. I use it when I go camping.
  20. I would take the land for the hunting and maybe you get lucky and they pay you to lease the gas rights down the road.
  21. I just have to say I use buckhammers in my 870 with rifled barrel and love them. Would be surprised if it is the ammo. Check all connections of barrel to reciever and scope mounts. Otherwise send it back. Good luck and let us know what it was.
