2 years ago I was dropping a deer off at a processor in orange county the day after opening day (sunday). As expected there were tons of guys dropping off deer, and there was a DEC biologist and ECO checking the deer and tags. Two morons that were hunting somewhere in sullivan county (the WMU had ARs) show up with a crotch horn and a doe. The crotch horn was not legal as it was tagged from a WMU with ARs, and the doe was tagged with a 3M DMP. They unloaded the deer and showed them to the ECO as if they were perfectly legal. I really think that they had no idea that they did anything wrong.

In 4R there were way less shots in my area than normal, but this makes sense given that it was the first year of AR. Also, amazingly the first shot did not take place until legal hours. It is like a running joke with my group, we usually hear a shot when it is still ridiculously dark and no one could see anything without a flash light. Also, I still heard the guys that sound like they are hunting with a 20 round banana clip.

i could imagine that gets a little hairy, especially if they are not too keen on hunting

My dad was working at a house in Paramus, NJ and saw this guy hanging out in a small patch of woods in the back yard. For those not familiar, Paramus is a really densly populated suburb of NYC, with only small patches of woods along rivers and near parks. This guy is the result of zero hunting pressure and zero predators. If they can avoid getting hit by cars, this is what you get...

I once used a buck bomb and has a group of does go absolutely crazy as they winded it. Running in circles like nothing I ever seen before. No bucks showed up either.

Why not call the guy the night before you plan on hunting and find out I he plans to hunt that spot. If not no problem, if so maybe hunt a different spot that day?

I hunt both seasons and enjoy taking deer with bow and rifle. I do like the lack of competition though during bow season and the fact that the woods are a lot less crowded and the deer aren't so spooked. I have no problem with gun hunters though

I was bow hunting this past friday in 3M and a pack of 7-8 coyotes came running past my stand just as it was starting to get light. The first one stopped 10 feet from my stand, but I didn't shoot because I could not tell if it was someone's german shepard. After the others came running through I realized that it was definitely a coyote. Let's just say I was happy to be in a treestand. I have seen a single coyote in the woods before, but never in a large pack like this.

happens to everyone. I have been hunting for 15 years and still get buck fever. Keep at it!

I just can't stand all the orange pumpkins walking around at 7:30 in the morning.

This happened to me last year - a guy that hunts a powerline behind me shot a nice 8 pointer on opening day. He showed me the pictures and told me he was getting it mounted. A week or so later I am hunting my property and I hear a shot from the powerline. I get a call from him a few minutes later asking if he could cut through my property with his four wheeler to drag it out. Seeming like a nice enough guy and the fact that he asked permission I told him no problem. As he drags it out I see that it is a legal spike horn. I watch him put it in his truck - no tag. I questioned him and he said that he thought it was a doe (which raises several more questions). I really thought about calling the DEC on him. It drives me crazy when guys are only out for meat and shoot young bucks when we are in an area that is over run with does and you could easily fill all of your DPMs in a single weekend (you could get 4 dmps this year in 3m).

My brother got this 10pt at 8:30 this morning. We saw 5 different bucks this morning in 3m.

Today was the first day of ar in 4r (and a bunch of other wmus as well). As expected I heard about a quarter of the amount of shots that we typically hear on opening day. Amazingly the first shot was at legal shooting time. Of the 5 guys in my group, we all saw the same 4 pointer and I also saw a small crotch horn. Very disappointing day for us, but there are 2 bucks still on their feet due to AR. Hopefully they grow into bruisers next year.

Paulie what part of the state are you in. I hunt Orange County and there is a good donation drop off sight in Middletown. Real easy process

Last day of work today. Hoping to fill my bow tag tomorrow in 3M, then heading up to camp in 4R. Very excited - MAKE THEM FALL IN THE FALL!

This past Saturday I was sitting in a stand for the afternoon post. I see a bruiser come walking down the hill angling away from me towards my neighbor's yard. I try some grunt calls and some doe bleeps but no reaction and he kept walking in the opposite direction (probably about 200 yards away at that point). I also can see two really small does walking in his direction so I figure that he will follow them and have no reason to come back in my direction. My wife had made dinner plans with friends that night so I would be in big trouble if I wasn't home by 6. With only about 10 minutes left of legal shooting time left I start packing my stuff up, taking my arrow off my bow, etc. Just as I had my arrow in one hand and my quiver in the other hand, my neighbor starts up a chainsaw. The two does come jetting right at me and before I could react they are standing 5 feet from my stand. I look behind them and here comes the bruiser right on their heels. Given how close they were I couldnt move to put down my quiver and nock an arrow, so I had to sit still as the bruiser walks past 3 of my shooting lanes at 22 yards. Lesson learned - it's never over until legally over.
